District College Football Recap for Saturday, September 11th

Only one conference game highlighted the schedule in Week 2 for most teams. Crossover play dominated the PSAC for weeks 2 and 3, while the PAC squared off with the MAC in cross-state battles with not good results for the local squads.
Here are the final scores and recaps from all the day's action around the area:
Slippery Rock 30 Cheyney 0
Ryan Sabo threw two touchdown passes to Devin Goda as the Rock goes to 2-0 on the season in a PSAC crossover matchup.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Rock exploded for 23 second quarter points. Chris Darby took advantage of a short field, capping a six play drive with a one yard run. Sabo hooked up with Goda on successive possessions, hitting from 13 and 44 yards out. The Rock was able to force Cheyney into a three and out, getting the ball back with 1:26 remaining in the half. True freshman running back LaQuinn Stephens-Howling took over, with four carries for forty yards on the drive, leading to a C. J. Bahr 24 yard field goal with five seconds remaining in the half.
The third quarter was also scoreless, Thomas Miller scored on a seven yard run for the Rock with three minutes remaining in the fourth. Miller came in as the third running back for the Rock, he was listed coming into the game as a safety. Akeem Satterfield, who put up 240 yards vs. Merrimack, did not play due to an ankle injury. Darby led the way for SRU with twenty carries for 140 yards. Sabo caught seven passes for 103 yards. The Rock committed 14 penalties for 137 yards.
The Wolves fall to 0-2 and have not scored a point this season. Cheyney has now lost 30 consecutive games.
Delaware Valley 27 W & J 0
The 10th ranked Aggies held the 20th ranked Presidents without a first down into the third quarter with the shutout home win. Mark Hatty threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third for the Aggies. W & J was held to five first downs, minus 11 yards on the ground and only 67 yards of total offense.
Quarterback Gino Rometo threw for only 40 yards and was sacked six times. The W&J defense was paced by Gal's 12 tackles. He also forced a fumble in addition to his interception. Sophomore safety Ian Hennessey also produced a game-high 13 tackles, while senior free safety Craig Sedunov notched 11 stops.
Albright 54 Geneva 27
The GT's saw a seven game home winning streak come to an end on Saturday night at Reeves Field. Albright scored the game's final twenty points to pull away over the last twenty minutes.
Josan Holmes staked Albright to a 7-0 lead on the opening drive with a one yard run. David Girardi answered with a nine yard touchdown pass to Alex Mack. Holmes scored on a twenty yard run, but Girardi hit Corey O'Patchen with a 71 yard touchdown to make it 14-13 Albright, the extra point was no good.
In the second quarter, John Whalen kicked a 38 yard field goal to give Albright a 17-13 lead, Gerald Muschette capped a ten play drive with a one yard run to put Geneva up 20-17. But it was all Albright to end the half. Luke Wallace hit Scott Pilar for 46 yards and a touchdown to go back up 24-20, twelve seconds later Josh Hare returned a fumble 33 yards to the house and Whelan added a 33 yard field goal to put Albright up 34-20 at the half.
Muschette scored on the first drive of the second half, his second of the game on a seven yard run to make it 34-27, but Albright turned on the jets, including Holmes third touchdown of the game to put Geneva in the rear view mirror.
Holmes carries 28 times for 225 yards and the three scores. Albright is now 1-1 on the season. For Geneva, Muschette ran for 135 yards on 24 carries. Girardi was 27 of 33 for 266 yards, the GT's are now 1-1.
Duquesne 35 Dayton 31
Sean Patterson hit Sean Bunevich for a eight yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds remaining to go to 2-0 on the young season. Patterson ended up 27 of 40 for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Dayton jumped out to a 21-7 second quarter lead, but Patterson was able to lead the Dukes on two late scoring drives, including a touchdown pass to Connor Dixon on the final play of the half.
Nick Glavin gave the Flyers the lead back with a 27 yard field goal in the third. Larry McCoy scored on a four yard run to put Duquesne back up 28-24. McCoy rushed for 84 yards and two scored to lead the Dukes. Steve Valentino put Dayton back on top with 1:23 remaining in the game on a 26 yard pass to Justin Watkins, but Patterson was able to engineer the game winning drive. Valentino ended up 22 of 32 throwing the football for 248 yards, he ran for 47 yards including a nine yard touchdown. Dayton is now 1-1 on the season.
Robert Morris 35 Sacred Heart 31
The Colonials pick up their first NEC win of the season in dramatic fashion as Jeff Sinclair hooked up with Shadrae King from seven yards out with 17 seconds to play to give Robert Morris the road win. Sinclair and King connected for three touchdowns on the day.
Sacred Heart quarterback Dale Fink had a wonderful day in the loss, throwing for 324 yards and four touchdowns, he was sacked five times and intercepted on the final play of the game.
Sinclair ended up 14 of 28 for 250 yards. Myles Russ ran for 116 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Sacred Heart falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the NEC.
Morehead State 31 St. Francis Pa 21
Morehead State avenged a 31-0 loss in Loretto last season with the home win. Zach Lewis threw for 458 yards and four touchdowns for the Eagles, now 1-1 on the season.
St. Francis jumped out to a 7-0 lead 15 seconds into the game when Justin Mullins returned the opening kickoff 92 yards. John Kelly threw for 162 yards, going 20 of 34 with two touchdowns for the Red Flash, who fall to 0-2.
Youngstown State 31 Butler 7
Dominque Barnes returnd a punt 88 yards for a touchdown to give the Penguins their first win at the Ice Castle this season. Adaris Bellemy ran for 60 yards and two touchdowns for YSU, now 1-1. Andrew Huck threw for only 148 yards and the Bulldogs only score, Butler is now 1-1.
Edinboro 16 West Chester 14
The 24th ranked Fighting Scots made it 2-0 on the season on the road. Cody Harris tossed two touchdowns to Gary Nolen, one for 19, the other for 27 yards. The difference in the game came when Matt Caternolo tackled West Chester qb Mike Mattei in the end zone for a safety in the third quarter.
The Fighting Scots only managed 204 yards of offense, the defense allowed 398 yards but only allowed two touchdowns. Mattei threw for 321 yards on 22 of 39, but he was picked off four times, allowed the safety and was sacked five more times. James Jackson had two more picks for Edinboro. West Chester falls to 0-2 on the season.
Cal U. 40 C.W. Post 14
The fourth ranked Vulcans ripped off 30 unanswered points as they cruise to 2-0 with the win in New York. Lamont Smith took over the Cal running game, rushing for 129 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. Josh Portis threw for only 138 yards and two touchdowns, he also added 79 yards on the ground.
The Vulcan defense forced five turnovers and notched a safety on a punt attempt. Shawn Anderson had two picks for Cal U.
Pioneer QB Eric Anderwkavich threw for only 135 yards with three interceptions, he was sacked twice. C.W. Post falls to 1-1.
Bloomsburg 41 Clarion 13
It was a good start for the Golden Eagles as quarterback Eric Coxon capped a 75 yard opening drive with a one yard touchdown run. But it was all Bloomsburg after that as tailback Franlyn Quiteh ran for 218 yards and two touchdowns to pick up the win. Quarterback Pat Carey threw for two touchdowns, including a 66 yard bomb to Cory Stiger. Bloomsburg is now 1-1, Clarion falls to 0-2.
Millersville 35 Lock Haven 20
Jarryd Burkett and Robert Meade each threw touchdown passes as the Bald Eagles got the offense untracked but were plagued with the yellow flag, committing 13 penalties for 107 yards. Meade ran for 57 yards and was 10 of 17 throwing for just 96 yards and four interceptions. Burkett was 11 of 14 for 141 yards.
Bill Shirk connected with Jamal Smith for three touchdowns, Shirk was 20 of 32 for 232 yards. Millersville is now 1-1 on the season, Lock Haven falls to 0-2, the Bald Eagles have dropped 23 consecutive games.
Gannon 22 Shippensburg 19
The Golden Knights rallied from a 19 point deficit, sending the defending PSAC champions to 0-2 with the loss. Quarterback Zach Boedicker threw for three touchdowns, the defense held Shippensburg to just 71 yards in the second half.
Mike Frenette staked the Red Raiders to the 19-0 lead, with two touchdown runs of 16 and seven yards. Steven Adams threw a touchdown pass to Kevin Marshall to open the scoring. Boedicker hit Khalid Walker for a 26 yard score and Levar Goff for a 54 yard touchdown in the third. Boedicker found Jerry Smith for a 22 yard touchdown with 6:32 remaining, then hit Walker for the two-pointer to take the three point lead.
Marshall returned the kickoff to the Gannon 28, but Adams was picked off by Khayree Connors in the end zone to end the drive with 3:03 left. Following a punt, Shippensburg took over at the 45, but could only get to the Gannon 44 before turning the ball over on downs.
Gannon has now won six games in a row, dating back to 2009. The Golden Knights are now 2-0 for the first time since 1995.
Kutztown 35 Mercyhurst 14
Josh Smith caught three touchdown passes from Kevin Morton in the Bears win. Kendall Coleman added a 78 yard punt return for the winners, now 2-0. Morton threw for 364 yards, Smith had six catches for 109 yards.
Gerald Anderson scored on a 70 yard run, Garret Kensy tossed a six yard touchdown pass to Trevor Kennedy for the Lakers, now 1-1.
Urbana 44 Seton Hill 13
Quarterback Evan Gehlert ran for two scores and threw for another as the Blue Knights racked up 445 yards of total offense to go to 1-1 on the season. Urbana led 30-0 at the half.
For the Griffins, now 1-2, Daniel Butler led with 58 yards on ten carries. Seton Hill committed six turnovers in the loss. Nick Mahagan ran 53 yards with a fumble for a touchdown, Patrone Wood added a four yard run with three minutes remaining. Mahagan led the defense with 14 tackles.
Allegheny 34 Carnegie Mellon 27
T.J. Salopek threw four touchdown passes and became the all-time leading passer in Allegheny history on Saturday. Salopek threw for 280 yards, he hit David Strawser for three scores. Ryan Zipf added field goals of 48 and 34 yards for the Gators, now 2-0 on the year. Strawser ended with six catches for 127 yards.
For CMU, Justin Pratt scored on a four yard run and Rob Kalkstein threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns, he also was the Tartans' leading rusher with 59 yards. CMU falls to 1-1.
Wycoming 40 Westminster 10
Josh Kleinfelter ran for 209yards and two touchdowns as the Warriors piled up 466 yards of offense. Lycoming never trailed as Zach Klinger threw a 31 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wagaman. Westminster fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Lycoming turned that into seven more points in just eight plays.
Trevor Young kicked a 29 yard field goal and Shawn Lehocky hit Colin Wallace for a 17 yard touchdown for the Titans' scoring. Both teams fall to 1-1 on the season.
Grove City 17 Lebanon Valley 14
Blaine Miller caught a 33 yard touchdown pass from Clayton Hall with 4:12 remaining to give the Wolverines the lead for good. The pair hooked up for a 13 yard touchdown earlier in the game. Miller caught eight passes for 107 yards. Hall led the Wolverines with 72 yards rushing, he threw for 205 yards on 17 of 26. Vince Angleo made a career high 11 tackles for Grove City, who is now 1-1 on the season. Lebanon Valley was led by Ben Guiles ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns, the Dutchmen are now 0-2.
Wilkes 38 Waynesburg 35
Brad Dawson threw for 271 yards and three touchdowns but it was not enough to get the Yellow Jackets the win on Saturday. Dominic Moore added two short touchdown runs for Waynesburg.
The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over five times, Dawson throwing four interceptions. Troy Garove ran for 97 yards on 18 carries, Waynesburg is now 0-1 on the season. Wilkes was led by quarterback Tyler Bernsten, he threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. Wilkes is 1-0.
Widener 21 Thiel 0
The Pride scored all 21 in the first half and never looked back for the home win. Colin Masterson threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead Widener, now 1-1 overall. The Pride ended a seven game losing streak. Thiel had only 137 yards of offense, falling to 0-2.
FDU-Florham 28 Saint Vincent 23
Quarterback Matt Jeffers threw a 65 yard touchdown pass on the opening play of the game to give FDU the early lead and they held on for the win. Quarterback Aaron Smetanka threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns for the Bobcats, but was picked off in the end zone with 35 seconds remaining. Tom Quirin had six catches for 151 yards. The Bearcats fall to 0-2, FDU-Florham is now 1-1.
Bethany 31 King's College 29
Eric Walker ran for 220 yards and three touchdowns, but the Bisons held their breath as a last second field goal attempt of 35 yards by Ryan Cain went wide. Quarterback Matt Grimard ran for 150 yards and a touchdown, he also connected with Johnathan Foster for a three yard touchdown. Bethany is now 1-1. King's College is now 0-2.
