Kiski Area senior Ross Greece picked up his second scholarship offer, and first at the Football Championship Subdivision level, from Robert Morris on Saturday.
The offer came as Greece visited Robert Morris for the Colonials' game against Virginia Military Institute. He said the team is recruiting him as a running back.
“It's an amazing feeling,” Greece said. “I worked so hard during the offseason (and) give everything I have on the field. (I'm) excited to finally see it paying off.”
Edinboro offered Greece a scholarship over the summer to play linebacker.
A first-team all-conference pick as a junior, when he surpassed 1,000 yards rushing, Greece scored touchdowns on a rush and kickoff return in Kiski Area's Big East Conference loss Friday to Latrobe. He also plays linebacker for the Cavaliers and started at safety his first three seasons at Kiski Area.
Sunday becoming star
Plum coach Matt Morgan said earlier this season that senior Dakota Sunday has a frequent question for him.
“He's always asking, ‘Coach, what do I have to do to be all-conference?' ” Morgan said.
He might soon find out. Sunday is becoming a star. The Mustangs' fullback and middle linebacker scored four touchdowns in their 33-7 upset of Franklin Regional on Friday night.
The performance against Franklin Regional came at an important time for Plum (2-2, 2-1 Big East), which lost quarterback Corey Thomas for the season the week earlier against Penn-Trafford.
Sunday also made one of the biggest plays in a 9-6 victory over Kiski Area in Week 1, stopping Greece on fourth-and-goal in the second half.
“I'm sure his actions will speak louder than his words. He's a soft-spoken kid,” Morgan said after that game. “But the kid's playing great, and hopefully he can keep it going for the entire year.”
Jett setter
Highlands senior Jermaine Jett couldn't make his full impact Friday night, as he was limited to playing defense after missing the Golden Rams' Week 2 game against New Castle with a shoulder injury.
He made his presence felt, however, covering the field from sideline-to-sideline from his linebacker position. He dropped Knoch fullback Ivan Stapchuck for a 5-yard loss in the first half and had a sack on the Knights' final play of the game to clinch Highlands' 24-16 victory.
“I was hungry to get some tackles,” Jett said. “I haven't played in a week, two weeks, (and) it was killing me. I'm happy I was out there.”
Junior running back Cameron Taylor also returned for Highlands after leaving the New Castle game with an injury.
Touchdowns for a cause
Kiski Area's scoring plays for the rest of the month will carry an added benefit.
As part of a partnership between MaxPreps and Pledge It, Kiski Area is participating in the new program Touchdowns Against Cancer. Every touchdown scored by the 14 participating teams between Sept. 14-30 will benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Kiski Area is the only WPIAL team participating. The Cavaliers scored three touchdowns in their loss to Latrobe on Friday.
Moore, Moore, Moore
Shady Side Academy quarterback Skyy Moore missed much of the 2016 season with an injury, but the New Kensington native is making up for lost time.
Moore rushed for 196 yards and three touchdowns as SSA knocked off Apollo-Ridge, 38-14, on Friday. He rushed for 101 yards and four touchdowns and passed for another score in a victory over Burrell the previous week.
