The North Allegheny boys volleyball team was a favorite to claim Saturday's Derry Area tournament, and the Tigers produced results to back that up.
NA, the top team in the latest Western Pennsylvania Boys Volleyball Coaches Association Class AAA rankings, topped defending champion Penn-Trafford in a one-game final, 25-16, to take the title.
The Warriors, No. 3 in the AAA rankings, defeated rival Norwin in the semifinals. North Allegheny beat Altoona from District 6 in the other semifinal.
The Tigers won 12 of 13 games during the day-long tournament.
Twelve of the 15 teams in the field advanced to the playoffs. Each playoff matchup was one game to 25.
In the quarterfinals, North Allegheny beat Pine-Richland, Altoona topped Class AA No. 2 Deer Lakes, Penn-Trafford beat Shaler and Norwin beat AA No. 3 Derry.
The AA rankings are expected to change after Derry topped Deer Lakes last Wednesday in the first meeting of the section rivals this season.
The regular-season tournament schedule for WPIAL teams continues Saturday with the Fox Chapel and Hempfield tournaments.
The Central York Invitational and the Plum Invitational will be April 21, with the State College tournament on April 28.
