South Hills notebook: Baldwin athletes excel at Mars Invitational

Notebook items from around the South Hills:

• Baldwin's tracksters enjoyed a successful trip to Mars in preparation for the annual Baldwin Invitational, which took place Friday at Baldwin Stadium.

The Highlanders returned home from the recent Mars Invitational with 15 individual medalists, including five first-place finishes.

Three boys — seniors Mike Starzynski and Nick Lachut and junior Bailey O'Malley — posted winning performances, while senior Laurel Bristow led the girls team by winning two events.

Starzynski zeroed in on first place in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 11.25 inches; O'Malley secured the top spot in the shot put with a heave of 53-2.5.

Lachut, who is the defending WPIAL Class AAA champion in the pole vault, cleared 12-10 to win that event. Bristow, meanwhile, has been a dominant force in the girls track and field scene this season, and maintained that status at Mars by finishing first in the javelin (131-10) and shot put (41-5.25).

Other Baldwin medalists consisted of sophomore Angelo Priore (100), juniors John Ziegler (800) and Brendan O'Malley (long jump), seniors Sedrick Riddick (triple jump), Eli Geary (pole vault) and Robert Hoffman (javelin); along with junior Macy Hale (800), senior Alina Stahl (long jump), sophomore Hannah Stock (pole vault) and Bristow (discus).

Priore, Riddick, Stahl and Bristow finished as runners-up in their events.

In the relay events, Baldwin earned medals in the boys 1,600 and 3,200, and the girls 3,200.

The boys 1,600 relayers consisted of Starzynski, senior Elijah Currie, Lachut and junior Billy Wiles. The 3,200 relayers were Ziegler, sophomore Ted Boehm, junior Jared Koenig and senior Kevin Sheehan.

Sophomore Makenzie Shandor and juniors Kerri Herron, Devon Schroeder and Hale made up the girls 3,200 relay unit.

Other top performances for the boys team at Mars were turned in by O'Malley (200), Boehm (800, 3,200), Starzynski (hurdles), Hoffman (long jump) and junior Noah Bartic (shot put).

For the girls, it was Stahl (100), Shandor (3,200) and Schroeder (3,200).

• Thomas Jefferson sophomore Yash Maheshwari took first place at the Section 1-AA boys singles tennis tournament, defeating South Park's Logan Mannheimer by 6-0, 6-1 scores in the championship round.

Shawn Radovic, a senior, also qualified for the tournament in Section 1-AA.

Other team members for the Jaguars this season consist of seniors Stephen Ciechalski, Chris Piper, Parker Rittiger, Nico Stoicovy; juniors Isaiah Gathala, Chad Gress, Andrew Griffiths, Ryan O'Leary, Colin Ruggieri; sophomore Pratham Patel; and freshmen Nathan Mutale, Roman Ruscitto and Owen Zacharias.

• Baldwin junior Tommy Ahlin and senior Jake Lombardi advanced to the Section 3-AAA singles tournament in boys tennis this season.

Other team members for the Highlanders include seniors Chad Kelley and Nick Regel; junior Mike Magnotti; sophomores Bill Brown, Remy Davic, Dan Mezhinsky, Ian Murphy and Dominic Yeso; along with freshman Hunter Kozlowski.

• Thomas Jefferson's baseball team recently snapped a five game-losing with a 7-3 section win against Albert Gallatin.

Senior 1B/OF Luke Warhola went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Jaguars. Sophomore hurler Cam Dimidjian was the winning pitcher.

• Senior shortstop Taylor Dadig homered and had three RBIs to lead the Baldwin softball team to a 4-3 section win May 1 against rival Canon-McMillan in a Section 1-6A matchup.

Sophomore second baseman Cassie Carlson was 2 for 4 with a double for the Highlanders, and junior hurler Addie Tagg was the winning pitcher.
