Westinghouse’s James Ellis signs with Duquesne

Duquesne men’s basketball coach Keith Dambrot added his first Pittsburgh-area recruit Tuesday when Westinghouse senior James Ellis signed with the Dukes.
The 6-foot-11, 230-pound center had decided to attend a junior college but changed his plans once Duquesne became an option. Ellis is Duquesne’s first Westinghouse recruit since Chuck Cooper, who became an All-American for the Dukes and was the first African-American player drafted by an NBA team in 1950.
Ellis averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds and 7.6 blocks as Westinghouse (18-7) reached the City League finals and the second round of the PIAA playoffs. He earned first-team all-state honors and was chosen as a member of the Trib 10.
Ellis is Duquesne’s first Pittsburgh City League player since Schenley graduate Jack Higgins played for the Dukes from 2004-06 after transferring from Cleveland State.
