Thomas Jefferson’s girls tennis team is gearing for a strong WPIAL playoff push this season.
With six returning starters, coach Chuck Correll has high hopes for success in 2018.
“Win or lose, we commit to the principles that coach Correll has instilled in us over the years: work hard, commit to your teammates, improve every day, have fun and win,” Faith Rockwell said. “I expect great results from our team this season. We have a great group of girls who share a passion for tennis who encourage and support each other.”
Two returning sophomore starters are Cassidy Como, at third singles, and Shannon Day, at first doubles.
The TJ girls are aiming to improve on last year’s winning 9-7 team record.
“That strong effort laid the groundwork for this season,” Rockwell said. ”This year’s team has a great work ethic and a positive attitude. Many girls put in hours of practice beyond what is required by coach Correll, and it translates into results on the court.
“In addition, the team’s true strength lies in strong bonds that exist between the girls. These bonds create a positive team attitude which fuels our competitiveness to win matches.”
Rockwell’s future plans include attending a four-year college. She is looking into various options at this time.
“Tennis is the only sport I play competitively, but I enjoy playing all sports and being active outdoors,” Rockwell said. “Academics are also very important to me.
“I am currently completing my application for the United States Naval Academy, as my first choice would be to serve my country as a midshipman.”
