MONDAY
Girls soccer
The second half of section play is underway as teams wind toward the postseason. Connellsville at No. 2 Norwin (Section 3-AAAA) and Yough at Mt. Pleasant (3-AA) are games of note, and a good nonsection matchup has Class A No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic at Burrell.
Boys soccer
Greensburg Salem is hoping to get into the WPIAL playoffs in Class AAA and will get a nonsection tune-up at home against Hampton, a team in the same boat.
TUESDAY
Boys golf
The WPIAL Class AAA individual championship returns to famed Oakmont Country Club. The course, home to nine U.S. Opens, also hosted the district finals in 2016.
Franklin Regional’s Palmer Jackson and Latrobe’s Brady Pevarnik are among the favorites.
Boys soccer
Despite a couple of losses recently, Latrobe remains in the thick of the Section 3-AAAA playoff race. The Wildcats travel to Connellsville looking to sweep the Falcons.
Another key game in the section is Plum at Penn-Trafford.
Top games in Section 3-AAA: Belle Vernon at Laurel Highlands and Greensburg Salem at Trinity.
Mt. Pleasant at Shady Side Academy is the top matchup in Section 2-AA. Shady Side won the first meeting.
Girls volleyball
Derry moved into the No. 5 spot in the Class AA rankings this week. The Trojans will travel to take on No. 1 Freeport in a Section 5 match.
WEDNESDAY
Girls soccer
Some of the better section games around the county include Norwin at Latrobe (3-AAAA), Franklin Regional at Hampton (1-AAA), South Park at Yough (3-AA) and Greensburg Central Catholic at Shady Side Academy.
Penn-Trafford at North Allegheny is nonsection but should have a playoff feel to it.
Girls golf
The top players in the district will compete for individual championships as the WPIAL Class AAA and AA finals are contested at Diamond Run Golf Club in Sewickley.
Girls tennis
The WPIAL doubles championships get underway at Shady Side Academy (Class AA) and North Allegheny (AAA).
THURSDAY
Boys soccer
Greensburg Salem hosts one-time Section 3-AAA leader Laurel Highlands, which shut out the Golden Lions last month.
Trinity Christian at Greensburg Central Catholic features a pair of potential playoff teams in Section 2-A.
Girls soccer
Seneca Valley travels to Harrison City to play defending WPIAL Class AAAA champion Penn-Trafford. Seneca Valley is the only team to beat Norwin this season.
Girls tennis
The WPIAL doubles conclude in Class AAA and AA.
Girls volleyball
A few matches to watch in the area, which could come with playoff implications, include Penn-Trafford at Latrobe (Section 3-AAAA), Greensburg Salem at Franklin Regional (1-AAA) and Greensburg Central Catholic at Riverview (4-A).
FRIDAY
Football
No. 1 Gateway and Franklin Regional are mere miles from one another but are even closer in the Class 5A Big East standings. The key showdown is for first place in the conference.
Another game from the conference, Latrobe at Penn-Trafford, also could be interesting.
While nonconference games rarely get top billing, especially around midseason, No. 4 OLSH at No. 1 Jeannette is one of the best games to watch in Class A.
Norwin hits the road in the Class 6A conference looking to upset No. 3 Central Catholic.
Other notable matchups have Trinity at No. 3 (4A) Belle Vernon, Mt. Pleasant at Burrell, Southmoreland at No. 2 (2A) Charleroi and No. 1 (3A) Aliquippa at Yough.
Boys soccer
Greensburg Central Catholic at Serra Catholic is the top section game on the local slate (2-A), and good nonsection matchups have Greensburg Salem at Monessen, Pine-Richland at Franklin Regional and Latrobe at Kiski Area.
SATURDAY
Girls soccer
Section 1-AAA offers Kiski Area at Franklin Regional, and Greensburg Central at Serra is a good matchup in Section 1-A.
