High school roundup for Oct. 1, 2018: Upper St. Clair girls upset No. 1 Peters Township

Jane Madson and Landy Mertz scored first-half goals, and the Upper St. Clair defenders made them hold up as the Panthers upset No. 1 Peters Township, 2-1, in a Section 2-4A girls soccer game Monday night.

It was the third straight win for Upper St. Clair (7-3, 6-3), which lost 2-0 to the rival Indians on Sept. 8.

Regan LaVigna scored for Peters Township (9-2, 7-2).

Baldwin 7, Brashear 0 — Adriana Marina had three goals to guide Baldwin (2-8, 2-7) to a win in Section 2-4A.

Seneca Valley 2, Pine-Richland 1 — Julia Redilla scored with 15 minutes remaining to guide No. 3-ranked Raiders to a Section 1-4A victory over Pine-Richland (9-3, 5-3).

Lauren Sileo also scored for Seneca Valley (10-1, 8-1), which has won six straight games.

Hampton 3, Kiski Area 2 — Valerie Fisher had two goals to lead Hampton (9-3, 7-2) to a Section 1-3A win.

Elizabeth Forward 1, Laurel Highlands 0 — Bri Skalicam scored for Elizabeth Forward (4-6, 4-3) in a Section 2-3A victory.

Thomas Jefferson 2, Obama Academy 0 — Dalaney Ranallo had two goals and Maddison Sippey scored the shutout for the Jaguars (5-7, 5-3) in Section 3-3A.

Montour 3, Central Valley 1 — Rachel Defeo scored twice to guide No. 2 Montour (8-2, 6-1) to a Section 4-3A victory.

Shady Side Academy 2, Springdale 0 — Krystyna Rytel and Sophia McMahon scored, and Molly Skzorak made four saves as No. 3 Shady Side Academy (5-1, 4-1) won in Section 1-A.

Chartiers-Houston 5, Charleroi 0 — Alyssa Wright had two goals for Chartiers-Houston (8-5, 7-1) in a Section 2-A win.

Carlynton 1, Ellis School 0 — In Section 4-A, Anya Carassto scored to lead Carlynton (6-4, 5-3) to victory.

With a big section test looming, Burrell made an out-of-section statement.

Burrell 3, Greensburg Central Catholic 2 — Jordyn Kowalkowski scored a pair of second-half goals, and Burrell rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Class A No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic.

Annie Weimer scored just before halftime to cut Burrell’s deficit to 2-1. Maddie Schaub and Danica Johnson had one assist apiece, and Delaney O’Brien made nine saves for the Bucs (9-1).

Tatum Gretz scored both goals for GCC (5-1).

Highlands 4, Valley 0 — Jaci Bowser had a hat trick for Highlands (4-5, 3-4) in a Section 2-AA win over Valley (2-8, 0-7). Larkin Richards had a goal for the Golden Rams and Sam Gildner made two saves in net.

Freeport 4, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Emma Check scored twice to help Freeport (6-5, 5-3) avenge a loss earlier in the season to Apollo-Ridge (2-4-1, 1-4-1) in Section 2-AA play. Carlie Giori and Sidney Shemanski had a goal apiece.

Deer Lakes 6, East Allegheny 0 — Lily Litrun had a hat trick and Madeline Boulos scored twice to help Class AA No. 4 Deer Lakes (11-1, 8-0) cruise to a Section 2 win over East Allegheny (3-5-1, 1-5-1). Nina Lafko had a goal for the Lancers. Madeline Boulos, Abigail Boulos, Litrun and Emma Zawalnicki had one assist each.

Fox Chapel 5, North Hills 2 — Emma Wecht scored three goals and Britta Lagerquist scored two goals as Fox Chapel defeated North Hills (4-8-1, 2-6) in Section 1-4A play. Sophia Oehrle recorded one assist and Julie Scheffler recorded three saves in the win for Fox Chapel (4-6, 3-5).

Oakland Catholic 2, Plum 1 — Hannah Henn and Caitlyn Berl scored for No. 3 Oakland Catholic (9-1, 7-0) in a Section 3-3A game. Gina Proviano scored for No. 5 Plum (9-2, 6-2).

Hampton 3, Kiski Area 2 — Courtney Moyer and Christa Palla had a goal apiece, but Class AAA No. 4 Kiski Area (8-3, 7-2) dropped a Section 1 match at Hampton (9-3, 7-2).

Mars 5, Knoch 1 — Lindsie Galbreath scored for Knoch (1-10-1, 1-7-1) in a Section 1 loss against Class AAA No. 1 Mars (9-0, 9-0). Heather Wittmer assisted on Galbreath’s goal.

Mt. Pleasant 2, Yough 0 — Mackenzie Leeder scored with 15 minutes remaining, and Kayla Moninger added an insurance goal as Mt. Pleasant won a Section 3-2A game.

Shayree Ansell notched the shutout for Mt. Pleasant (8-4, 5-4), which has won four straight and outscored opponents 14-1 in that span.

Hempfield 5, Allderidce 2 — Jess Persin had three goals to guide Hempfield (3-5, 3-4) to a Section 3-4A victory.

Norwin 4, Connellsville 1 — Lacey Bernick, Katelyn Kauffman, Dani Iannuzzo and Kiana Francis scored for No. 2 Norwin (10-1, 8-0) in a Section 3-4A win.

Penn-Trafford 6, Penn Hills 0 — Kiley Dugan scored twice and had an assist, as Penn-Trafford (8-2, 7-1) rolled to a Section 3-4A win.

Erin Brady, Sarah Nguyen, Mackenzie Powell and McKenzie Septak also scored. Megan Giesey had the shutout.

Franklin Regional 8, Armstrong 0 — Victoria Rothrauff scored four times and Olivia Dorsch added two as Franklin Regional (5-5-2, 3-4-2) rolled to a Section 1-3A win. Tiffany Jolayemi and Sydney Coaldwell had the shutout.

Belle Vernon 4, Ringgold 0 — Izzy Laurita had a hat trick, and Jillian Butchki added a goal as Belle Vernon (9-2, 8-0) earned a Section 2-3A win.

Greensburg Salem 3, Uniontown 0 — Kylie Smith had two goals to guide Greensburg Salem (5-7, 5-3) to a Section 2-3A victory.

Waynesburg 10, Derry 0 — Rhea Kijowski had five goals to lift Waynesburg (10-2, 8-1) past Derry (1-9, 1-7) in Section 3-2A.

South Allegheny 5, Southmoreland 1 — South Allegheny improved to 4-5 overall and 3-5 in Section 3-2A with a win over Southmoreland (1-9, 0-9).

Serra Catholic 6, Jeannette 0 — Madison Carr had four goals for Serra Catholic (6-3, 5-2) in a Section 1-A shutout over Jeannette (0-7, 0-6).

Boys soccer

Freeport 9, Valley 2 — Hunter Hardin scored five goals as Freeport blew past Valley in Section 2-AA play. Stevie Teorsky, Braden Change, Danny Lynch and Cole Bennick scored one goal each for Freeport (7-6, 5-4). Valley remains winless at 0-11 overall and 0-9 in section play.

South Fayette 10, McKeesport 1 — Gavin Eldridge’s three goals led South Fayette (7-4-1, 6-2-1) to a Section 4-3A win.

Eden Christian 7, Aquinas Academy 0 — Alex Cook and Elijah Manges each scored twice for Eden Christian (5-3-1, 3-3-1) in a Section 3-A win.

Hampton 4, Greensburg Salem 1 — Harper Cook scored three times to lead Hampton (9-3) past Greensburg Salem (7-5) in nonsection play.

Connellsville 6, Mt. Pleasant 3 — Dom Prestipino and Anthony Rowan each had two goals for Connellsville (9-3) in a nonsection win over Mt. Pleasant (8-3).

Shady Side Academy 4, Derry 0 — Walter Navid scored twice as Shady Side Academy (6-3-1, 6-2-1) won a Section 2-2A game over Derry (2-7, 1-7).

Field hockey

Norwin 7, Latrobe 0 — Jessie Kolesar had three goals, and Karlie Pavlic, Maura Columbus, Carly Kubacka and Jade Taylor also scored for Norwin in a Division I win.

Hockey

Burrell 5, Neshannock 4 — Tyler Stewart had a pair of goals and Andrew Burkett made 39 saves to help Burrell (1-0) secure a PIHL Division II win over Neshannock (0-1). Bryce Scheuler, Jonas Sopko and Dylan Zelonka had a goal and an assist apiece for the Bucs. Jonathan Michaels scored twice for the Lancers.
