5 things to watch at WPIAL girls golf championships

The WPIAL Class AAA and AA girls golf championships will be held Wednesday at Diamond Run Golf Club in Ohio Township.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. The top seven finishers in Class AAA and top nine in Class AA advance to the PIAA Western Regional.

Here are five things to watch for from the top girls golfers:

Zambruno, Zambruno and Zambruno: Yes, three Zambruno sisters will be in the Class AA tournament field. Senior Abby Zambruno and freshmen Meghan and Ella Zambruno will be trying to duplicate what older sister Olivia did in 2014 and ‘15 — win a WPIAL title.

Wrigley going for three: North Allegheny senior Caroline Wrigley has won consecutive WPIAL Class AAA titles. She shot a 5-under par 67 and Diamond Run last year. She shot a 75 in 2106 at Treesdale Golf and Country Club. Her freshman season she placed fifth.

Class AA returning champions: Sewickley Academy senior Tatum McKelvey and Central Valley senior Kiaria Porter have won the past two WPIAL titles, and both are back in the 12-player field. McKelvey edged Porter by a shot in 2017, and Porter won by two shots in 2016.

State champions: North Catholic junior Maddie Smithco and Pine-Richland senior Lauren Freyvogel didn’t win WPIAL titles in 2017, but they did win the PIAA titles. Smithco shot a 78 at the Class AA qualifier, and Freyvogel fired a 71 at her Class AAA qualifier.

Watch out for …: North Allegheny senior Christina Lewis is a three-time WPIAL placewinner. She shot a 77 in 2017 and ‘15 and is a dark horse contender.
