The WPIAL boys and girls soccer playoff brackets will be released Wednesday, and the Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy boys and Quaker Valley girls will learn their postseason fates.
The top four teams and ties from each section in all four classifications earn playoff berths.
The Quaker Valley boys (15-3) strengthened their claim to a top seed in the AA playoffs with a 1-0 win over Sewickley Academy (12-4) on Tuesday.
The Panthers, along with Greensburg Central Catholic, Avonworth and Seton La Salle, captured section championships in Class A.
The Quaker Valley girls (8-8, 6-6) edged out Beaver (5-9-1, 5-6-1) by two points for the fourth and final playoff berth from Section 1-AA.
The Quakers capped the regular season Tuesday with a 3-2 nonsection win at Blackhawk.
Panthers advance
The top-seeded Sewickley Academy girls tennis team will take on No. 4 Greensburg Salem in the semifinals of the WPIAL Class AA team tournament Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Fox Chapel High School.
The Panthers beat Ellis 5-0 in the quarterfinals Tuesday, while the Golden Lions edged Derry 3-2.
In the lower half of the bracket, Quaker Valley, the No. 7 seed, wasn’t able to solve No. 2 Knoch in a 5-0 quarterfinal loss.
The top three teams qualify for the PIAA championships Oct. 23, 26 and 27. The final two days will be at the Hershey Racquet Club. Sewickley Academy is the defending WPIAL champion, and the Panthers advanced to the semifinals of last year’s state tournament.
SA field hockey in action
The Sewickley Academy field hockey team resumes Division II action with a road game at Aquinas Academy on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
The Panthers weren’t able to solve Shady Side Academy in an 8-1 division loss Tuesday afternoon.
The setback snapped a three-game division winning streak that featured victories over Winchester Thurston (1-0), Vincentian (9-1) and Oakland Catholic (2-1).
Sewickley Academy, 5-2 in the division and 5-4 overall, wraps up division play Thursday at 4 p.m. at Greensburg Central Catholic.
The Panthers then will prepare for the WPIAL Class A tournament. The bracket is scheduled to be revealed Friday with games to start Monday.
