No. 3 Greensburg Central Catholic withstood two persistent sets by No. 6 Brentwood, but prevailed for a 3-0 victory in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals Friday night at Oakland Catholic.

Despite no one recording more than two kills, the Centurions were able to use strong serves to throw Brentwood off balance in the opening set, prevailing 25-19. Brentwood put up more resistance in set 2, but freshman Rebecca Hess tallied four of her seven kills in the frame, helping Greensburg Central Catholic to a 25-23 win.

The Spartans went up 6-2 to begin the final set, but the Centurions ripped off a 9-2 run, as Sarah Petnuch picked up four of her team-high eight kills in the frame. Despite a late push by Brentwood, which was paced by Anna Betz’s eight kills and four aces, Greensburg Central Catholic finished things off, 25-22.

The Centurions will play No. 2 Carmichaels in the WPIAL semifinals Wednesday at a time and site to be determined.

Tyrone 3, Ligonier Valley 0 — Bella Vargulish had nine service points, three kills and two blocks, and Abby Neidbalson had six kills, seven assists and two blocks, but Ligonier Valley (7-9) lost in the first round of the District 6 playoffs.
