Top-seeded Shady Side Academy finished its first-round win with its left tackle behind center, an unorthodox move after quarterback Skyy Moore was injured.
One of the top players in the WPIAL, Moore is coping with a sprained ankle, so the Indians might try to win again Friday without their star senior. Shady Side Academy faces eighth-seeded South Side in a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal.
“We’re going to see how it is here, day to day,” coach Chuck DiNardo said. “We’re going to test him out and evaluate him.”
Moore was injured on a carry in last week’s 22-20 victory over Serra Catholic. Offensive lineman Ronan O’Connor, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior, finished the game at quarterback.
“With our numbers game, this is the third year in a row I’ve had my left tackle move to quarterback due to injuries,” DiNardo said. “It is crazy.”
Moore, a Division 1 recruit, led Shady Side to an undefeated regular season and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. He surpassed 1,000 yards passing and rushing for the second consecutive season.
