It came in a losing effort, but more Highlands offensive records fell Friday night.
Johnny Crise set new school single-game receiving records when he caught 10 passes for 301 yards and five touchdowns in the Golden Rams’ 49-42 nonconference loss at Class 3A No. 4 Keystone Oaks. The five scores included a 99-yard strike from Seth Cohen for the opening score of the game.
Cohen, who set single-game passing yards and touchdown records last season in an overtime loss to New Castle, had another big night against Keystone Oaks. The senior passed for 306 yards and five touchdowns and added 103 yards and another score on the ground.
It was Cohen’s third career game with at least five passing touchdowns, joining his seven-TD game against New Castle last September and a five-score performance against Blackhawk.
All told, Highlands and Keystone Oaks (2-0) combined for 91 points and 1,074 yards, 576 from KO and 498 from Highlands. Behind star running back Michael Daure, KO piled up 385 rushing yards; Daure scored six touchdowns, five on the ground.
Highlands (0-2) hosts Class 4A No. 5 Blackhawk (2-0) in its Northwest Eight Conference opener on Friday.
Selinger injured
Standout Freeport senior RB/LB Conor Selinger went down with a lower left leg injury in the first half of Friday’s 19-13 overtime loss to Big East Conference opponent Derry.
Selinger, who rushed for 13 yards before the injury, was treated on the sideline and taken to the locker room by cart at halftime. He fulfilled one of his team captain responsibilities by going to midfield for the coin toss at the beginning of overtime, using crutches.
Freeport coach John Gaillot said Selinger’s removal from the game was a “precaution.”
“I think he’s going to be fine,” Gaillot said. “I didn’t want to lose him for the season. I just wanted to make sure he was OK.”
The Yellowjackets travel to play Class 3A No. 2 North Catholic (2-0, 1-0) in another Big East game Friday at Mars Athletic Complex.
Hettich honored
Freeport volleyball senior Sarah Hettich was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Under Armour All-American watch list for the coming season.
A 6-foot-3 middle blocker, Hettich helped Freeport win its first PIAA championship in school history last season. She was named second-team all-section.
Bishop Canevin’s Kylie Airesman also was named to the watch list.
Myers offered
Tess Myers hit one of the biggest shots in WPIAL girls basketball as a sophomore, and it looks as though she’ll have a shot to play in Division I.
Myers, a Lower Burrell native and junior at North Catholic, received her second Division I offer last week from Kent State. She earlier received an offer from Niagara.
The 5-foot-10 Myers, a guard, made a shot at the buzzer to defeat Beaver in the WPIAL Class 2A girls basketball championship game in early March and later was named honorable mention all-state.
