Burgettstown is ready for another memorable year, similar to the one it put together last season.

The Blue Devils went 10-0 during the regular season but lost 7-6 to Freedom in the second round of the WPIAL Class Class 2A playoffs.

Fifth-year coach Mark Druga believes the key to last season’s success was “the combination of our program’s vision, coaching staff and the players buying into what we are teaching here at Burgettstown.”

“The community, interest and support from the locals is really what makes this a wonderful program,” he said.

Senior quarterback Jake Lounder completed 26 passes for 462 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Burgettstown uses a run-heavy offense. Of the 2,655 yards in total offense the Blue Devils racked up last season, 2,235 were rushing. And 33 of the 38 offensive touchdowns scored by Burgettstown were on the ground.

Junior running back Shane Kemper led the rushing attack last year with 650 yards on 99 carries. He is also scored eight of the team’s rushing touchdowns. Lounder rushed for 645 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Dylan Poirier led the Blue Devils in receiving with seven catches for 167 yards and three touchdowns.

“We have our quarterback, tailback and receivers all coming back this year, so I cannot wait to see what they bring to the table,” Druga said. “The chemistry between these players I think will be unbelievable this upcoming season.”
