On a cold, rainy day Wednesday in Verona, the WPIAL determined its top players in Division I boys golf and who would be advancing to play on October 18th at Thoms Run in Blairsville for the PIAA Western Regional Championships.
The day started with two golfers coming into the clubhouse early, thinking they may have to enter a playoff to see who would be the champion of Division I. Those players improved on their semi-final play, as a pair of sophomores in Evan Sommer of South Park and Evan Ruhling of Penn Hills both shot a 75. That score was good enough for the lead until the final group came in, as senior Chris Cline of Hempfield matched Sommer and Ruhling. But the score that would prevent the 3 golfers from going back into the rain to enter a playoff was that of Belle Vernon senior Bo Lustig, who shot a 73 to win the Division I boys golf championship.
The drama didn't end there though, as the Division II boys still had to come in to see which guys would be advancing to the Western Regional. The 36 golfers who were finished (all of the Division I players) featured 5 players who were tied with an 80, all of which would have to play a playoff for 2 spots. But Garrett Damich of Bentworth (76), Justin Miller of Riverview, and Shane Eichenlaub of Mohawk (78) would not only cancel the playoff, but also knock Upper St. Clair freshman Patrick McDonnell out of contention. McDonnell's 79 just missed the cut, as the top 24 players advanced with a 78 or better.
To the surprise of many, the golfers did an excellent job of handling the weather. Each individual player spoke about the toughness of the course and not the weather conditions, a sign that the golfers were prepared for whatever mother nature had in store.
Below you will find the scores from all of Wednesday's action. (The asterisk beside the numbers indicate who the 12 kids in Division II were who competed at Longue Vue Country Club.) The top 24 players will play Monday, October 18th at Thoms Run in Blairsville.
