North Allegheny & Shady Side Academy Back on Top in WPIAL Girls Field Hockey

The two most successful and decorated girls field hockey programs in Southwestern Pennsylvania are adding more gold to the trophy case Tuesday night. North Allegheny captured its 12th WPIAL Class AAA championship and first since 2010 with a victory over defending champ Fox Chapel. In Class AA, Shady Side Academy won a title for the 13th time in district history and three straight crown with a victory over Winchester Thurston. We celebrated America's Birthday earlier this month with various parades and fireworks. You'll forgive us if we celebrate the 2012-2013 school year with just a parade and no pyrotechnics. It was been another great high school sports year in District 7 of the PIAA. The 2012 WPIAL Field Hockey Playoffs went the distance and beyond before determining two champions as both title matches were settled in overtime Wednesday night at North Allegheny High School. Defending Class AAA champion Penn-Trafford was knocked off its throne by Fox Chapel as the Foxes won their first AAA crown and their second field hockey championship and first since 1997. Meanwhile, Shady Side Academy was able to edge Sewickley Academy in OT as the Indians repeat as AA champs. The title is the 12th in SSA history.
