It is a recurring storyline at Indiana High School. The Stapletons are staples of the football team. It has been the story in recent years at Indiana, and it is again this season. Two of the four Stapleton brothers had big impacts on the Little Indians’ opening-night upset victory against Mars last Friday. Riley Stapleton, a 6-5 senior receiver, caught seven passes for 95 yards and scored a touchdown. Dylan Stapleton, a 6-4 junior, caught five passes for 111 yards and scored two touchdowns.WPIAL & City League Friday Football Scores – 09/05/2014
With 124 football teams in the WPIAL and 6 in the Pittsburgh City League, that means there are 62 District 7 football games each weekend and anywhere from 3 to 6 District 8 games. Week two of this 2014 football season gave us the busiest Friday of the regular season with 60 WPIAL games (actually 59 games) and three more in the City League. While it will make for a quiet Saturday, here is the loooooong list of final results from Friday night. Welcome to Week 2 of the high school football season. Network superstar Sam Hall contacted Chick’s Picks this week to invite her on an adventure like no other – the opportunity to join him on one of his daily morning helicopter rides. Chick’s Picks was hesitant, as panic typically sets in when performing any activity in which her feet leave the ground. The 2014 local college football season kicks off with several games this weekend, three of which can be heard on the Network. Can Slippery Rock head back to the NCAA playoffs. can W & J win another PAC crown and can Geneva get back on the winning track. Here are previews of all of Saturday's action: Kutztown at Slippery Rock 6pm Kutztown was picked in the middle of the pack in the PSAC East. The Golden Bears will have a new coach in 2014 as Jim Clements takes over. Kutztown has won three straight games. WPIAL Football never seems to let you down. It also never surprises me how quickly the regular season goes flying by. Especially now with conference re-alignment from last season pushing conference games up to the top of the schedule, the games become very important right out of the gate. In fact, many teams only play conference games. Getting inside a kids head and making sure they know that games in early September count every bit as much as the ones in mid-October in determining if you play in November can be a tall task for coaches around the league. Saturday football continues to become more rare with each passing school year. Now that Geibel Catholic is not fielding a team this season (moment of silence), the WPIAL now only has four schools that play a majority of their home games on Saturday afternoon: Summit Academy, Wilkinsburg, Riverview & Western Beaver. The curtain rose Friday night on the 2014 WPIAL football season. Once again this season, MSA Sports will take time to look at ackowledge the top performances each Friday night with a little piece we call Friday Night HighLights. Sometimes they have gaudy numbers, sometimes they just grind it out, most times its an individual , but there are times we tip our cap to an entire unit or team. After a month of preparation, Countdown to Kickoff has come to an end, giving way to the start of a new high school football season. Every team began with a clean slate and with golden hopes and dreams. Here is a rundown of ALL of the finals from the First Friday of football in both the WPIAL and the Pittsburgh City League. Welcome to Week 1 of the high school football season. The ice bucket challenge has taken over social media outlets everywhere over the last several weeks. Chick’s Picks recently accepted the challenge – which raises money for ALS – and then, once completed, appropriately passed the challenge onto three others. Spending countless hours selecting her chosen three, Chick’s Picks finally narrowed down her list to two old pals from college, and, last but not least, The Fumbler. Dual-threat quarterbacks seem to be all the rage in football these days – and it shows on the Elite 11 team. The Elite 11 is made up of the top 11 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position. It is picked by the MSA Sports staff. This year’s team includes three quarterbacks who are dual-threats. In other words, they are excellent runners as well as passers. The dual-threat QBs are Seneca Valley’s T.J. Holl, Quaker Valley’s Dane Jackson and Ringgold’s Nico Law. But the Elite 11 is not without a traditional dropback QB. South Fayette’s Brett Brumbaugh might end up the most prolific passer in WPIAL history. Overall, nine seniors and two juniors are on the team. The Pittsburgh City League once again is a six pack. This is the third consecutive year that the City League will have only six teams. The closing of some schools has shrunk the league drastically in the past few years. Oliver and Langley closed after the 2011-12 school year. Only 10 years ago, the City League had nine teams. The City League almost dropped to five teams this season. Westinghouse had asked the WPIAL to join its league, but the WPIAL turned down Westinghouse’s request. In the new-look Eastern Conference, four teams return while there are five news kids on the block. But with the pedigree of most of the newcomers, you can see why they are considered the Fearsome Foursome. Here is the resume for the five new entrants into the Eastern Conference. Ten WPIAL football championships in the last eight years, two perennial powers in Class AA moving down to Class A and a team that set a district and state record 66-game winning streak along with the team that eventually broke that historic run. This could mean a tough 2014 campaign for Eastern traditionalists Leechburg, Riverview, Springdale and Wilkinsburg who finished a combined 8-28 a year ago and were all home listening to the postseason on MSA Sports.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 08/24/2014
