Welcome to Week 7. The 2013 edition of the Stretch Run is here…that time of year when the regular season is winding down, but postseason implications are heating up.  Since this is a critical time of year, we at the MSA Sports Network always get together for a team-building workout to ensure our physical and mental clarity for the remainder of the season.This year, we decided to go with our old faithful—yoga—which had proven results for Team MSA time and time again.  The Boss talked up the event all week, hinting to his team that this year’s session would offer some added flair.  He certainly did not disappoint.

What a neat year it has already been. The Pirates reached the playoffs and it appears so will the Avella Eagles and the West Shamokin Wolves! All three are tremendous stories this fall. The stretch run is here and all of those teams control their own destinies. That is all their fans have been hoping and praying for. Some teams don’t control their own fate. Some need help, and some need a lot of help. The time has come for scoreboard watching and more importantly listening to the MSA Sports Scoreboard show every Friday night with Don Rebel. If not for a couple of old school Homecoming Games, it would have been a lonely Saturday of high school football in Southwestern Pennsylvania. There were no games in the Pittsburgh City League and even with a pair of 'Saturday specials', there were only three games on the docket in the WPIAL. The second half of the 2013 high school football season and the first Friday in October kicked off with weather conditions closely associated with the first Friday of September. The care free days from the ninth month of the year are a distant memory as we bear down for the second month of the season. In a year when the Pirates ended a long playoff drought, a long WPIAL football playoff drought could end for one school.Avella in the WPIAL playoffs. It’s likely to happen.Avella takes a 4-0 record (5-0 overall) into Friday night’s game against Frazier. No matter what happens Friday night and in the final three games, Avella stands an excellent chance to make the playoffs. The last time the Eagles were in the playoffs was 1976.Avella’s playoff drought is the current longest in the WPIAL. The next-longest playoff drought belongs to Southmoreland, which hasn’t been to the playoffs since 1979.

Chicks Picks – Week Six – 2013

Welcome to Week 6. Pittsburghers had plenty to celebrate this week, Chick’s Picks included.  The Pirates recorded their first playoff victory in 21 years, and Chick’s Picks played a key part in it.Earlier this week, a member of the Pirates staff contacted Chick’s Picks about making a special guest appearance during the game.  Chick’s Picks was thrilled to learn that she was being invited to join Sauerkraut Saul, Cheese Chester, Jalepeno Hannah, and Oliver Onion in the world-famous Pierogy Race.

Week six just like that and while everyone in town is thinking about baseball we need to focus on the stretch run as it is just around the corner for the WPIAL football season. It is time to start jockeying for position, wins for your team and for teams your team has already beaten become bigger and bigger now as you hope to convince the playoff seeding committee of your team’s worthiness. Take care of your business and it will matter not what others think or believe about your team. That is the best thing about high school football, we play it out, win and your ranking has no bearing whatsoever on your chance at the crown.

WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for Week Five
It would have been another lonely, one WPIAL game on Saturday in Week Five if not for three school's who celebrated their Homecoming Weekend with afternoon high school football games. 'Tis the season as we say so long to September football and get ready for October football. Its time for the annual school ritual of Homecoming Weekend. Most schools still play their Homecoming football game on Friday night as part of a weekend of festivities, but a handful of schools go throwback and play their special games on Saturday afternoon. Shaler, Shady Side Academy and Burgettstown were three of those schools that helped make this a rather busy fifth Saturday on the high school football schedule. Scholastic Notebook – 09/27/2013
It doesn’t matter if there is security or a police presence at Ringgold football games. The key for fourth-year coach Matt Humbert is he always has had the Law on his side.Humbert has enjoyed success in his four years as Ringgold’s coach, and one of the keys is there has been a Law under center. Quad Law played quarterback for the Rams in Humbert’s first two years when the Rams were a combined 17-4. Now, Law’s younger, Nico, is the Rams’ QB.They are turning Ringgold into a Law school.After going only 4-6 last season, Ringgold is 3-1 this year heading into a big game tonight at West Mifflin. Nico Law has been a driving force, turning out to be one of the best-dual threat quarterbacks in the WPIAL.

Welcome to Week 5. Throughout her travels, Chick’s Picks sees many fascinating sights.  It is not every day, though, that she runs into a giant rubber duckie—especially here in Pittsburgh.  In case you have missed the news, The Rubber Duck Project is making its way to our fine city this weekend.Chick’s Picks decided to do a bit of research on the project.  The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust described it best, “The friendly, floating, four-story-high Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them.”  Chick’s Picks pondered the statement for a moment, then quickly realized just how much she and the rubber duckie had in common.
