The winds of change have swept down upon Southwestern Pennsylvania for the first Saturday of high school football in October. Week Six began on Thursday and Friday with very pleasant weather that felt like early September football. Less than 24 hours later, and the feeling is more like November football. Nonetheless, ten WPIAL football teams were ready to meet and put closure to the sixth weekend of high school football in the WPIAL. One and four. When those three words are uttered about a football team after five weeks, it usually indicates bad things. But for Blackhawk and Chartiers-Houston records are indeed deceiving. Blackhawk and Chartiers-Houston are two teams that are usually much more than respectable. You could say both have fallen on hard times this season as both are 1-4. But are there many 1-4 teams as good as Blackhawk and Char-Houston? Blackhawk and Char-Houston are the hard-luck stories of the WPIAL this season. A few points here and there, take away a turnover here and there, and their seasons could be vastly different. Want proof? Three of Blackhawk’s losses are by a total of five points. We start this edition of College Preview with heavy hearts with word of the death of W & J running back Tim McNerney early Thursday morning. Police Investigating Death of W & J Football Player Thursday
Police in Washington are investigating the death of a Washington & Jefferson College football player early Thursday morning.21-year Tim McNerney was taken to the Washington Hospital emergency room, where he was pronounced dead at 4:42 am. McNerney was found at the corner of College and Maiden Streets.Washington Police Chief Robert Lemonds said police are treating the death as suspicious, more information will be released after an autopsy was performed. The only bad thing about a jam-packed Friday night of high school football is that it leaves the Saturday district schedule a tad light. That was the case in Week Five with only THREE WPIAL football games, all on the Class A level. Not only did Seneca Valley’s 34-7 victory against Pittsburgh Central Catholic Thursday night give Seneca Valley a leg up on second place in the Northern Eight Conference, it was a monumental win of sorts for the Raiders. * For the first time in a while, the Raiders won a big game against an upper-echelon Class AAAA team. A year ago, Seneca Valley won a WPIAL playoff game for the first time since 2002. This time, the Raiders defeated a Central Catholic team that was ranked No. 4 in Class AAAA by MSA Sports. * The win broke Central Catholic’s 26-game regular-season winning streak. We cruise past the halfway point this weekend of the WPIAL football season, and big-time matchups abound throughout many of the classifications. The time has come to make some hay if you find your club in a good spot. If your favorite team is in a hole, the time has come to make your move because time waits for no man or football team. We are starting to see huge games that will have monstrous impact on playoff positioning and in one case a game that will likely determine a section championship this week, so let’s hurry along and go Big Game Hunting.
