2011 has been a tremendous year in high school sports in the WPIAL. It was a year where some familiar champions wore the golden crown again while some new faces surfaced in the championship picture. Anthony who? When Anthony Dallier decided not to return for his senior year at North Allegheny, many wondered what would happen to the North Allegheny basketball team. The leading rusher in the history of Pennsylvania high school football and the second-leading passer in WPIAL history are two of the headliners on this year’s MSA Sports Elite 11 team.The Elite 11 is the top 11 players in the entire WPIAL, regardless of position. The Clairton Bears went home Friday afternoon with ANOTHER PIAA championship, the third consecutive. But the Bears were the lone representative for the 2011 championships. WOW! Things got pretty crazy in the semifinals and the District Seven teams suffered some close losses. Only one team remains holding the WPIAL banner, but that team is a pretty good team to have on your side, in Tom Nola’s Clairton Bears. Two kicks...an extra point and a field goal proved to be enough Saturday to boot two more WPIAL teams from the Road to Hershey, leaving only one District 7 team still alive for a state crown.
