The 'Stretch Run' of the 2013 high school football regular season begins with a bang this week here on the MSA Sports Network. We have a busy seventh week of the high school football season with FORTY WPIAL, District 6 and District 9 football games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with Friday night kicking off with the expanded MSA Sports Pregame Show and concluding with the one and only WPIAL High School Football Scoreboard Show.

In a year when the Pirates ended a long playoff drought, a long WPIAL football playoff drought could end for one school.Avella in the WPIAL playoffs. It’s likely to happen.Avella takes a 4-0 record (5-0 overall) into Friday night’s game against Frazier. No matter what happens Friday night and in the final three games, Avella stands an excellent chance to make the playoffs. The last time the Eagles were in the playoffs was 1976.Avella’s playoff drought is the current longest in the WPIAL. The next-longest playoff drought belongs to Southmoreland, which hasn’t been to the playoffs since 1979.

It doesn’t matter if there is security or a police presence at Ringgold football games. The key for fourth-year coach Matt Humbert is he always has had the Law on his side.Humbert has enjoyed success in his four years as Ringgold’s coach, and one of the keys is there has been a Law under center. Quad Law played quarterback for the Rams in Humbert’s first two years when the Rams were a combined 17-4. Now, Law’s younger, Nico, is the Rams’ QB.They are turning Ringgold into a Law school.After going only 4-6 last season, Ringgold is 3-1 this year heading into a big game tonight at West Mifflin. Nico Law has been a driving force, turning out to be one of the best-dual threat quarterbacks in the WPIAL.

Now that Shai McKenzie’s football career is over, it’s time to reflect on how good of a running back he was at Washington High School. Going strictly by statistics, it’s not an overstatement to say McKenzie was one of the best of all time in the WPIAL.McKenzie’s senior season is finished because of a torn ACL sustained in last Friday’s game against Charleroi. He was scheduled to have surgery Friday.McKenzie finished his career with 4,856 yards on 493 carries and 77 touchdowns. The yardage is the 15th best in WPIAL history. Had he stayed healthy, there is a good chance McKenzie would have become only the fifth running back in WPIAL history to reach 6,000 career yards.

This week marks the start of section play in WPIAL boys golf, girls golf and girls tennis.
