MSA SPORTS CUP: Seton-LaSalle Are Rebels With a Cause After Winning AA Cup

For only the third time in the eleven years of the MSA Sports Cup Class AA chase, the torch has been passed to a new champion. Greensburg Central Catholic won the first three years, followed by a five year run by Shady Side Academy and the last two years with Quaker Valley on top. Now thanks to a lot of hardwood gold, Seton-LaSalle High School is wearing the Cup crown. After a couple of close calls in recent years, Seton-LaSalle was lifted to the top spot in part because of double gold on the basketball court this winter followed up with some diamond success in the spring.

MSA SPORTS CUP: South Fayette Roars to First Class AAA Cup Title

The first ten years of the MSA Sports Cup has shown us that while there are a couple of dominating schools in the other three classifications, the chase for the Class AAA Cup has been up for grabs with eight different schools earning The Cup in ten years. Now in the eleventh year of this competition, we have another first time winner in Triple-A making it nine different champs in eleven years. After finishing as the runner-up in 2012-2013 and being a steady member on the Top 5 in recent years, South Fayette is finally enjoying its day in the Championship Sun with a convincing victory.

MSA SPORTS CUP: Another Year, Another Quad-A Title for North Allegheny

Another school year and another MSA Sports Cup in Class AAAA for North Allegheny High School. NA captured their 11th Cup in eleven years since the MSA Sports Network started this school year long competition to determine the top sports programs in each classification. There are 20 sports in which schools can earn points in the competition and for the second straight year and only the second time in this history of the coveted competition, the Tigers earned points in ALL of them. In the 2012-2013 school year, North Allegheny scored a mind-numbing and record 1,115 points. In 2013-2014, they had to settle for a mere 965 points. The second place school finished 530 points behind NA.

2014 MSA Sports Diamond Dolls Softball All-Star Team

It doesn’t matter whether it was in the biggest classification of the WPIAL, or the smallest. There was an abundance of talent in district softball this season, evidenced by the MSA Sports Diamond Dolls all-star team. The Diamond Dolls team is made up of the top 10 players in the WPIAL and is picked by the MSA Sports staff. This is one of the most balanced Diamond Dolls teams, in terms of talent spread out over all four classifications. Two of the players are from Class AAAA, two from Class AAA, two from Class AA and four from Class A. Seven of the 10 players were in WPIAL title games. 2014 PIAA SOFTBALL PLAYOFF RESULTS

While it was a forget state softball postseason for the WPIAL, eastern Districts 1, 4 and 11 were golden following the four title games at Penn State University. District 1 teams Souderton and Springfield-Delco won the Quad-A and Triple-A titles while Central Columbia won state gold in Double-A for District 4 and Minersville won Class A representing District 11. It had been a tough state postseason for District 7 teams heading into the state Semifinals on Monday with only three WPIAL teams reaching the Final Four. Now that Seneca Valley, Greensburg-Salem and Neshannock have lost, there will be no district representation in the PIAA baseball and softball championships for the first time since 1979. Connor Coward’s right arm has been a major part of Seneca Valley’s turnaround story and march through the postseason. But Coward’s bat is also starting to be a big factor. Coward is a senior pitcher-shortstop for Seneca Valley. He is one of the top pitchers in the WPIAL, but he pitched only one inning in the regular season because of a stress fracture in his back.

In the end, a pair of top-seeds won it all, a #2-seed claimed gold and the surprise of the postseason was a lucky #13-seed taking home gold in AAA. There were three new champs, a repeat in Class A, two first time champions and an undefeated team standing tall in the end. It was a soggy three weeks, but this springs softball district postseason is in the books with Shaler, Thomas Jefferson, Beaver and Neshannock wearing the golden crowns. WPIAL Baseball and Consolation Recaps for Thursday, May 29th

While many eyes were on both CONSOL Energy Field for the baseball finals and California University of Pennsylvania for the softball championships, five spots in the upcoming PIAA state playoffs were up for grabs at W&J College Sports Complex and at West Mifflin High School. Beaver Claims First Softball Gold in WPIAL AA Softball Championship

It was a dominant performance for Casey Farkasovsky when she needed it most. Beaver's sophomore starting pitcher shined bright on the big stage at California University as the Bobcats defeated the Deer Lakes Lancers 2-0 in the Class AA WPIAL Softball Championship. Both teams entered the game unbeaten and the matchup featured the top two seeds in the bracket. Farkasovsky shut down a Deer Lakes team that had seven hitters batting over .400 for the season. She held the Lancers to just three hits and fanned nine batters to go to 16-0 on the season with 129 strikeouts.

The scene shifts to California University, the long-time home of the WPIAL Softball Championships on Thursday. Four championships will be decided, three of the four number 1 seeds in the tournament advanced to play for the gold medal. The perfect championships don’t happen often in WPIAL softball. But for the Deer Lakes Lancers, they’ve been in the perfect storm before. Deer Lakes is 18-0 and will play Beaver (15-0) for the Class AA championship Thursday at California University of Pennsylvania. It is only the third time in 17 years that a softball title game will match two undefeated teams. But it’s the second year in a row for Deer Lakes. In 2013, Deer Lakes and Riverside both took undefeated records into the title game before Riverside came away with a 5-1 victory. The only other time in the past 17 years that two undefeated teams met in a final was 1998 when Carmichaels beat Sto-Rox for the Class AA crown.
