After Day One of the McDonald’s/WPIAL Boys and Girls Swimming Championships, the West Allegheny Indians hold a 33 point lead to try and claim a second straight Girls Class AA championship, while on the boys side, Indiana holds a sizable lead over Hampton for a second straight boys championship.Individually on the girls side, junior Braelyn Tracy of Elizabeth Forward upset defending champion Kara Kaulius of West Allegheny for the 200 Freestyle title. Margaret Gruber of Mars claimed her second straight championship in the 100 Butterfly. A pair of freshman also claimed WPIAL gold, Maddie Bartrug of South Fayette in the 50 Freestyle and Bria Otwell of Freeport in the 200 IM.Senior Bobby Francis of Quaker Valley, the 2011 breaststroke champion, claimed gold in the 200 IM on the boys side.Here are the individual and team standings after the opening day:This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 02/27/2012

Pine-Richland Divers Sweep Boys and Girls WPIAL AAA Championships

For the second straight year, Pine-Richland senior Lauren Lamendola captured the WPIAL Class AAA Girls diving crown. For the second straight year, she was in a dogfight for the championship. And for the second straight year, Lamendola saved her best efforts for the final three dives to grab the title. The South Carolina bound Lamendola had to climb back from an admittedly poor dive in the preliminary round. She made it back to fourth after the first five dives. After the next three dives, Lamendola had climbed into second place behind Bethel Park junior Ashley Sams. Lamendola grabbed control of the final session by scoring 57.20 points on her “McDonald’s Dive of the Match”, her first of three dives in the final round. Sams, Lamendola and Pine-Richland teammate Tiana Broen, Moon’s Heather Lonkert and Alexis Rectenwald from Penn Hills played leapfrog among the top 5 spots throughout the entire competition.Youth Is Served at 2012 WPIAL Class AA Diving Finals
At South Park High School, a youth movement was served as South Park sophomore Bill Rountree and Chartiers Valley freshman Maria Lohman won the 2012 Boys and Girls Class AA Diving Championships respectively. Rountree won his first title on home water but it wasn't easy, while Lohman cruised to an easy victory. Overall South Park will send 2 girls and one boy to the state championships, and South Fayette will send one boy and one girl.2011 WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League Team Champions on Parade

After being blanked on Day One on Friday, Saturday turned out to be a golden day for four WPIAL swimmers at the 2011 PIAA Class AAA Swimming and Diving championships at Bucknell University. After finishing close for so many years, the Shady Side Academy boys team has finally reached the top of the state Class AA swimming mountain. The Indians swam their way to a state title Wednesday and Thursday at Bucknell University by beating runner-up Fairview by 27 points. Indiana was the only other WPIAL team to finish in the top ten overall with 8th place.There are New Sheriffs in the WPIAL AA Pool as Indiana Boys and West Allegheny Girls Swim to Gold

While there will be swimming gold heading back to North Allegheny High School, the Tigers could not double their pleasure. The North Allegheny girls won their third straight WPIAL Class AAA team swimming title, but the boys string of five straight was snapped Friday afternoon at Trees Pool. For the second year in a row, Uniontown senior Jonathan Jones walked away golden from the WPIAL AA Diving Championships Friday afternoon at South Park High School. The Bucknell recruit will get another preview of his future college when he and five other seniors represent the WPIAL at Bucknell University in the PIAA Championships.Riverside’s Jenny Ard is The Golden Girl in WPIAL Girls AA Diving Finals
For Jenny Ard, this has been a long time coming. Ard, the senior, has finished in fourth place in the WPIAL AA Diving Championships two years in a row, but was able to overtake Kathleen Dunst during the final round of competition to bring the gold medal back to Riverside Friday afternoon at South Park High School.
