Peters Twp Duo Beat OC Duo Again to Win PIAA AAA Double Tennis Title
November 3, 2012
Sara Komer and Abby Cummings of Peters Township beat Nicole Cyterski and Megan Wasson of Oakland Catholic last month in the WPIAL Girls Doubles Championship. Saturday, the two teams met again for state gold in Hershey with the same result.Komer and Cummings swept past Cyterski and Wasson 6-4, 6-3 to win the 2012 PIAA Class AAA Girls Doubles Crown at the Hershey Racquet Club.The Peters Township duo did not lose a game in four victories in the state doubles playoffs.In the Class AA state playoffs, the WPIAL finalists of Amy Cheng and Jappmann Monga of Sewickley Academy and Chelsea Carter and Sara Kaminsky of South Park each won in the First Round before being eliminated in the PIAA Quarterfinals.

Peters Township Girls Golden Again, Win State Tennis Crown

Peters Township continued their dominance over the rest of the state in Girls AAA Team Tennis. On Saturday, the Indians captured their second consecutive PIAA AAA championship by blanking Unionville 3-0.The victory gives Peters Township their fourth state crown in the past seven years and marked the seventh straight year that a WPIAL team captured gold in the PIAA Class AAA Girls Team Tennis Championship.The Indians beat Erie McDowell 5-0 in Round One, eliminated Harriton 4-1 in the Quarterfinals on Friday in Hershey, then knocked out Conestoga in the Semifinals on Saturday morning before the winning the championship at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Saying “it’s time to move on,” Chartiers Valley’s Chris Saluga will coached his final game with the Colts Friday night. Saluga has decided to resign as Chartiers Valley’s football coach, effective after Friday night’s game against West Allegheny. Saluga already has handed in his letter of resignation to the school board. “I don’t know how to say it, other than it’s just time for me to move on,” Saluga said. “I’ve done all I can here.”

The Peters Township girls tennis team made it back-to-back championships Thursday afternoon while Sewickley Academy was unable to win a second straight golden crown Friday as they fell to Quaker Valley.. The title is the second straight for Peters Township, their third crown in four years and fourth golden racquet in school history. The Quakers championship is their second in three years and sixth overall. Peters & Sewickley Duo’s Win 2012 WPIAL Girls Doubles Tennis Gold Again

Sarah Komer of Peters Township and Sewickley Academy have done it again. A year after Komer won the AAA crown with Stephanie Smith, she has now captured gold with a new teammate in Abby Cummings. The two beat the top-seed duo of Nicole Cyterski and Megan Watson of Oakland Catholic Friday afternoon at North Allegheny High School in the Class AAA title match. CALLIE FREY & SPENCER CARAVAGGIO WIN 2012 WPIAL GIRLS SINGLES TENNIS TITLES

A returning champion and a first-time winner are wearing the gold Friday after winning titles in the 2012 WPIAL Girls Singles Tennis Championships at North Allegheny High School. Quaker Valley senior Spencer Caravaggio won her second WPIAL title with a straight set victory over freshman Alyvia Kluska of Greensburg Central Catholic. Caravaggio overcame a shoulder injury which forced her to serve underhand to claim the title she won as a sophomore in 2010. Meanwhile, Mount Lebanon junior Callie Frey was a straight set winner over rival Megan Adamo of Upper St. Clair. Here are all of the results, including the two consolation winners from the first WPIAL postseason of the 2012-2013 school year.

SSA Settles for Silver in PIAA Boys Team Tennis

Eight is definitely Great for Sewickley Academy boys tennis. The Panthers Friday celebrated their 8th consecutive WPIAL Boys Team Tennis Class AA championship with a victory over the Hampton Talbots. Sewickley Academy continued an impressive district domination of a team sport with their 16th championship in the last 18 years. Meanwhile, Shady Side Academy squeeked by defending champion Mount Lebanon to win the AAA crown. The Indians title is the second in three years and fourth in school history. SSA & SA Academy Duos Win 2012 WPIAL Boys Doubles Tennis Titles

It's not often that an 8th seed wins any tournament, but it rarely happens on the tennis court where the top-seeds often prevail. The Shady Side Academy tandem of Alok Nimgaonkar and Chris Grubbs broke the mold Friday when they swept past Ben Short and Dylan McCullough of Fox Chapel to win the 2012 WPIAL Class AAA Boys Doubles Tennis titles. Alok's brother Vivek was on the district doubles winning team a year ago. However in Class AA, the top seed did prevail to win the championship as the duo of William Kleeman and Patrick Dellinger of Sewickley Academy won the Class AA Finals in straight sets over Tim Hoban and Alex Kietz of Winchester Thurston. Kleeman won the WPIAL Class AA boys doubles title a year ago with then Panthers teammate Daniel Martchek.

Butler’s Nesbitt & Sewickley Academy’s Kaye Win WPIAL Boys Singles Tennis Championships

Last year, Will Nesbitt of Butler beat Vivek Nimgaonkar of Shady Side Academy in a hard fought three-set match in the WPIAL Semifinals before moving on to win the district title. Golden Weekend in Hershey for WPIAL Doubles and Singles Tennis Girls

Hershey is known world wide as Chocolate Town, USA. However on Saturday to five WPIAL girls tennis players, Hershey became the Golden City. District 7 players swept the doubles titles and also won gold in the Class AAA singles tournament in the 2011 PIAA Girls Doubles and Singles Tennis Championships.
