If you've seen this story before, it's because history is repeating itself in high school wrestling around the WPIAL.Last year Burrell won the AA Team Championship to extend the all time record for consecutive seasons with WPIAL team championships at six.Also last year, Canon-McMillan won the AAA Team Championship for the third straight year, tying the all time AAA mark set by North Allegheny from 1986-1988 for winning WPIAL team championships.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 12/03/2012

London Bound: Local Athletes on the US Olympic Team – Jake Herbert

Jake Herbert, a 2003 North Allegheny graduate has been named to the 2012 Olympic wrestling team in the 185 pound weight class. He is one of two Western Pennsylvanians to make the team, the other being Coleman Scott from Waynesburg. Herbert is also a 2009 graduate of Northwestern University and lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is a two time NCAA champion winning titles in 2007 and 2009, and four time All American. He compiled a 135-4 record in college with two undefeated seasons. In High school he won the 2003 PIAA state championship and placed all four years. He compiled a 141-18 record in his four years at North Allegheny.
London Bound: Local Athletes on the US Olympic Team – Coleman Scott

Former three-time PIAA state champion and Waynesburg high school graduate Coleman Scott has made the US Olympic Wrestling team as a freestyle wrestler. Scott, an NCAA Champion in 2008, was the final man to make the Olympic squad after defeating top ranked Shawn Bunch and Reece Humphrey in a wrestle off. Scott has been a member of the US National team since 2009. He was a four time All American at Oklahoma State and one of two Western Pennsylvanians to make the 2012 Olympic team. Seven of the eight teams in the WPIAL baseball finals are quite familiar with this championship stuff. They all have won at least one title in the past nine seasons. As championship traditions go, the eighth team in the finals is like the odd man out. Belle Vernon has never won a WPIAL championship, and the WPIAL has been staging championships since 1914. Belle Vernon will try to win its first title when it plays Blackhawk in the Class AAA championship Tuesday night at Consol Energy Field in Washington.2011-2012 MSA SPORTS ALL MAT WRESTLING TEAM

The WPIAL team championships may have had the same results for the 3rd year in a row, with Burrell winning the AA and Canon McMillan winning the AAA WPIAL title (in addition to the Big Macs winning the PIAA Championship). The individuals certainly did not disappoint, with the WPIAL bringing home 6 individuals state championships plus the City League claiming its first ever gold medal. Derry’s Gulibon Joins Elite Group, Wins Fourth State Wrestling Title

In his usual dominating fashion, Derry’s Jimmy Gulibon joined a very elite club by becoming the tenth wrestler in PIAA history to win four individual state titles at the 75th annual PIAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday afternoon at the GIANT Center in Hershey. On the strength of four takedowns, the Trojans’ senior cruised to a 9-3 decision over Keystone Oaks’ Nick Zanetta in the Class AA 126-pound final. Gulibon also defeated Zanetta, a junior, at the WPIAL Class AA Championships two weeks ago, 11-4, and at the PIAA Southwest Regional tournament last Saturday, 11-3. The Penn State recruit, named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, finishes his high school career with a 136-4 record. Gulibon won Class AAA titles as a freshman and sophomore and AA championships the past two seasons.
Four WPIAL & One City League Class AAA Wrestlers Win State Championships
Led by Cody Wiercioch, Canon-McMillan won its second straight PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championship Saturday evening at the GIANT Center in Hershey. The Big Macs, with 102 team points, easily outdistanced second place Central Dauphin (67 points). Chambersburg finished in third place with 52 points. Weircioch won his second state title with a 7-4 decision in the 170-pound final over Norristown’s Shane Springer. The Big Macs’ junior completed a perfect 46-0 season by scoring three takedowns on his way to the gold medal. Wiercioch, who won his first state title at the Class AA level two years ago as a freshman at Charleroi, advanced to the finals with an 11-4 semifinal victory Saturday morning over Solanco’s Connor Moran.PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships – Day Two

Derry’s Jimmy Gulibon is on the brink of becoming only the tenth athlete in 75 years of Pennsylvania wrestling history to win four individual state titles. The Trojans’ senior advanced to Saturday afternoon’s 126-pound final with quarterfinal and semifinal victories over Hanover’s Ian Brown, 8-1, and Ridgway’s Corey Bush, 14-4, on Friday at the GIANT Center in Hershey. It has been sixteen years since another WPIAL wrestler, McGuffey’s Jeremy Hunter, last won his fourth state crown in 1996. The eight other wrestlers to accomplish this feat are Jim Conklin, Waynesburg (1943); Jerry Maurey, Clearfield (1950); Mike Johnson, Lock Haven (1961); Matt Gerhard, Catasauqua (1984); Ty Moore, North Allegheny (1990); John Hughes, Benton (1991); Cary Kolat, Jefferson Morgan (1992); and Bob Crawford, Milton (1993). Derry Area wrestler Jimmy Gulibon is in Hershey this weekend, trying to make history. The Derry senior is trying to become only the 10th wrestler in Pennsylvania to win four state titles. If Gulibon wins, this one would probably mean the most, simply because of what he overcame this season. Flash back to late December, when Gulibon was wrestling in the finals of the Powerade Tournament. He won, but sustained a left knee injury. Gulibon, and some others, thought the injury might be serious. They thought it might be an ACL tear. “He was very scared because he never even really had an injury before,” said Derry coach Mike Weinell. “We didn’t know at the time how serious it was. Jimmy just knew he couldn’t do what he does. He couldn’t push off his foot or his leg.”PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships – Day One
A remarkable forty of the WPIAL’s forty-two Class AAA wrestlers survived the first day of wrestling and will again be in action Friday afternoon at the 2012 PIAA Wrestling Championships at the GIANT Center in Hershey. With three WPIAL wrestlers entered in each of the fourteen weight classes in the Class AAA brackets, twenty-seven won first round bouts Thursday afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals. Thirteen of the fifteen wrestlers losing in the first round turned around and won their first round consolation matches to remain alive in the tournament. The WPIAL was perfect in five weight classes, advancing all three of its AAA wrestlers at 106, 126, 160, 182 and 285 pounds. Only the 220-pound bracket saw all three wrestlers drop their first round match. But Pine-Richland’s Ben Balish, Canon-McMillan’s Alex Campbell, and Greensburg Salem’s Tanner Hahn all bounced back to win their first round consolation bouts.This Week on the MSA Sports Network – 03/05/2012

2012 WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Results

The WPIAL Individual Championships finished the same way the Team Championships did, with the Canon-McMillan Big Macs on top. Canon-McMillan finished first in the team standings with 216.5 points, over 100 more than the 2nd place team Central Catholic (112 points). Franklin Regional (111 points), Hampton (107.5 points), and Greensburg Salem (99 points) wrapped up the top five.Helping Canon-McMillan win the team race were 8 wrestlers making it to the finals. Conner Schram (120), Solomon Chishko (138), outstanding wrestler Cody Wiercioch (182), and Cody Klempay (285) were all champions for the Big Macs, as they will take 8 wrestlers to Hershey next week. The two day PIAA Class AA Southwest Regional Wrestling Championships are in the books in the final step to Hershey. Here are the results from the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown as the top five from each weight class advance to next weeks state finals.WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Finals – Day Two Highlights
The Class AAA WPIAL Championships had a similar feel Friday as it did on Thursday, as the top wrestlers at each weight class continued to march toward the finals. The Quarterfinals and 1st round of consolations were wrestled on Friday, with four wrestlers being eliminated in each weight class.Only 8 of the 56 top 4 seeds from the 14 weight classes did not advance into the semi-finals that will be wrestled on Saturday. Some of the big upsets on Friday were at 138 pounds, where Hampton’s Kevin Synan beat 2nd seed Cole Landowski of Kiski by fall in 5:09, and at 160 pounds, where Kellan Stout of Mount Lebanon beat 2nd seed Marco Crivelli of Hopewell 4-0. Also pulling upsets were Zack DeLuca of Central Catholic at 220 pounds, beating 3rd seed John Phillips of Albert Gallatin by fall in 4:31, and Damon Sims Jr. of Hopewell beating Luke Fleck of Franklin Regional at 285 pounds 2-1 in double overtime.
