The Midwestern Conference has a new look for 2010, gone is long time member and defending tri-champion Center. Taking the place of the Trojans is Class A Semifinalist Laurel. Will things stay the same with Aliquippa and Beaver Falls battling for the conference title or will another team step up to challenge the two remaining powers?
Many of the coaches in the conference have said this is the most balance the conference has had in years, and one or two plays or games could seperate a playoff team from a last place squad.
Here is a preview of the MAC teams and predicted order of finish:
ALIQUIPPA QUIPS
The Quips finished 11-2, with a second straight trip to Heinz Field. But Aliquippa could not overcome the powerful Greensburg Central Catholic squad, falling 33-7 in the title game. The good news for Quip fans, almost the entire
team returns for the 2010 season, making Aliquippa a favorite to win the conference and head back to Heinz Field for a third straight season. Aliquippa opens conference play on September 3rd at Laurel.
The Quips have Darius Walker in the backfield, and had Ben Cobb transfer in to the program from Center.
Mikal Hall started most of the season at quarterback, Aliquippa also returns Davion Hall and Haetaun Mathis.
Donald McKensie anchors the offensive line for Aliquippa, making all-conference in 2009, as did Khaili Seaburn on the defensive side. Aliquippa gets two big additions up front as tight end/linebacker Damon Henry moves in from Brashear
and 6-7 tackle Zachery Hooks transferred in from Chaleroi during the basketball season.
Cobb was also all-conference in the secondary. The Quips suffered a huge loss with Troy Jeter being out for the season.
BEAVER BOBCATS
The Bobcats finished 5-5 last season, but went 5-3 in conference play to make the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Beaver will have 55 players in
uniform to start the season.
Junior Christian Herstine will start at quarterback, having battled an illness that plagued him during the first half of baseball season. Senior Sam O
