South Fayette enjoyed a breakout season in 2009. They went undefeated in the regular season and captured the Class AA Century Conference championship. However their season came to a bitter end in a wild shootout loss to Aliquippa in the WPIAL Quarterfinals. That nightmare finish in 2009 though led to a golden dream season in 2010. Again, the Lions roared to another perfect regular season and second straight conference title, but this time they finished the job by getting sweet revenge in the district championship game by beating Aliquippa for their first WPIAL crown in 46 years. Here is a look back at the WPIAL Class AA in 2010.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM WPIAL CLASS AA FOOTBALL IN 2010:
* An impressive decade came to an end for Aliquippa with another trip to Heinz Field. In the ten years that the WPIAL has played the title games at the big house on the North Shore, the Quips have played in five of the Class AA championships, including the last three consecutive seasons. In the other five years they did not make it to Heinz Field, the Quips lost in the Semifinals twice, Quarterfinals twice and First Round once. They have won two WPIAL and one PIAA championship in the decade.
* 2010 was finally "The Year of the Deer!" For the first time in school history, Deer Lakes participated in a WPIAL playoff game. Not only did they qualify for the postseason, they finished second in the Allegheny Conference and hosted an opening round postseason game thanks to six straight wins to end the regular season, including three against conference powers Freeport, Burrell and Shady Side Academy. Much like the Pittsburgh Pirates this summer, the Lancers seemed to have many throughout the WPIAL jumping on their bandwagon with support. But the dream season ended with a 34-21 opening round loss to the Beaver Bobcats.
* In 2009, the Ellwood City football program was dealing with a 31 game losing streak, which finally ended with a won over New Brighton in Week 8. But in 2010, Lincoln High wasn't just focused on avoiding a third winless season in four years, they had much bigger fish to fry. Another great turnaround story was the Wolverines going from outhouse to penthouse as Ellwood City finished 5-3 in the tough Midwestern Athletic Conference and beat out rival Riverside for the fourth and final playoff spot. From winning two games in four years to going 6-4, the Wolverines proved that lofty goals in August each year are worth fighting for.
* Speaking of losing streaks, the district's longest current skid belongs to a school that may be leaving the WPIAL after this school year. West Shamokin went 0-10 in 2010, leaving them with 34 consecutive losses. The Wolves last victory was a 20-8 triumph over Allegheny-Clarion Valley on September 21st, 2007. Since joining District 7 in 2004, the Wolves have only four wins over WPIAL teams in seven years. Word the West Shamokin is looking to move into District 6 next year.
