Derry javelin thrower Sophia Mazzoni, an elite talent with state and national titles, committed Wednesday to Auburn.
The senior announced her college decision on social media.
Mazzoni won a PIAA Class 2A title in May with a personal-best throw of 161 feet, 10 inches at the state meet in Shippensburg. She’d celebrated WPIAL gold about a week earlier and added another title in June at the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia.
Her personal-best throw ranked seventh nationally among all high school girls last season, according to Milesplit.com.
Auburn competes in the powerhouse Southeast Conference. The SEC had four teams among the top six in the season-ending women’s rankings last spring.
This isn’t the first time Auburn has recruited a WPIAL standout. South Park thrower Maura Huwalt won an SEC discus title in 2022.
Mazzoni can become a three-time WPIAL javelin champion next spring. She won her first WPIAL title as a sophomore and placed second that year at states. As a freshman, she was 10th at states and third in the WPIAL.
I’m happy to announce that I am continuing my academic and athletic career at Auburn University. Thank you to everyone that has supported me throughout this amazing journey. WAR EAGLE ???? #commited #javelin @AuburnTFXC pic.twitter.com/Q2VwbE1ekG
