Freeport still is searching for its best performance, but the Yellowjackets have a chance to find it in the WPIAL semifinals.
Ally DeJidas tallied a team-high 12 kills and Lauren Lampus added 11 to lead Class AA No. 1 Freeport to a 3-0 sweep of No. 8 Seton LaSalle in a WPIAL quarterfinal match Tuesday at North Catholic.
“I think the biggest thing we have to do as a team is learn how to relax,” Freeport coach Tom Phillips said. “I think if we are able to do that, I think the ability is there and the quality of players is there. We just have to relax. I think for us to get back on course we have to get stronger in the middle and relaxed as a team. I know the athleticism is there and the ability is there, it’s a mind game right now.”
Freeport (16-2), the defending PIAA champion, advanced to the WPIAL semifinals for the sixth consecutive season. Maddie Clark had 32 assists to lead the Yellowjackets, who will play No. 4 Frazier on Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
Frazier 3, Deer Lakes 2 — No. 12 Deer Lakes came within a set of another WPIAL playoff upset, falling 15-11 to No. 4 Frazier in a Class AA quarterfinal at Moon.
Senior Kaylee Sciubba had a team-high 13 kills to go along with six blocks, seven digs and four aces for the Lancers (9-6), who toppled No. 5 OLSH in the first round. Renee Robson added 19 assists and six digs, and Cameron Simurda had eight kills and five digs.
The teams alternated set victories, with Frazier winning the first, third and fifth. Deer Lakes forced the deciding fifth set with a 26-24 win in the fourth, but Frazier came back to take the match with a 15-11 victory in the fifth.
“The last two matches we played were our best matches of the year,” Deer Lakes coach Terry Gaston said. “My girls played hard and played well. They battled all year and they didn’t quit tonight.”
