Terry Smith is still the head football coach at Gateway High School, although his position as head coach and athletic director is up in the air after the 2012 season. On Wednesday night in front of a packed house at the high school auditorium, the Gateway school board voted 8-1 to prevent the athletic director of the school district to have a supplemental contract as the high school football coach. However, it would not go into effect until December 31st of this year.

Last month, the school board approved a new 65 million dollar budget with plenty of cuts, including cutting the athletic directors position to part time.

The 2012 football season will be the 11th for Smith as head coach at his alma mater. He has a record of 92-28 and has led the Gators to six conference championships and four WPIAL title games.

Most in attendance came to show their support for Smith, who was happy to still be the coach of the Gators by the end of the night. He vowed to keep his battle alive to maintain his fulltime athletic directors position with the school district and keep coaching at Gateway beyond the 2012 season.
