Sophomore Tyler Samide drove in two runs and earned a save to lead No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic to a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Washington in a WPIAL Class 2A first-round baseball game Tuesday at Gateway.
Samide doubled in Anthony Grippo in the first inning and then scored on a single by Tyree Turner. Samide’s sacrifice fly in the third inning proved to be the winning run for the Centurions (12-5). Losing pitcher Caleb Patton and William Callan each had two hits for the Little Prexies (9-10).
“I don’t care how it looked. It was a ‘W,’” Greensburg Central Catholic coach John Boyle said. “Tyler came through for us. I felt the Washington pitcher did a great job moving the ball around.”
Samide came in to relieve starter Ethan Brody in the top of the fifth inning after Washington scored two runs.
Greensburg Central Catholic will meet No. 4 Burgettstown in the quarterfinals Monday. The Blue Devils defeated No. 13 Jeannette, 103, on Tuesday night.
