High school baseball roundup for April 10, 2019: No. 2 Mars tops No. 5 South Fayette

Teddy Ruffner homered and had two RBIs, and Tyler Kowalski and Alex Heavner also knocked in a pair of runs as No. 2-ranked Mars defeated No. 5 South Fayette, 7-3, in a Section 2-5A baseball game Wednesday afternoon.

John Wetherholt had two doubles for the Planets (6-3, 1-1).

Richie Dell had two hits and an RBI for South Fayette (3-2, 1-1).

Baldwin 7, Canon-McMillan 5 — Andy Sopata and Kieran Schmidt each had two RBIs to help Baldwin (3-3, 1-3) win a Section 3-6A game. Tyler Greenleaf knocked in three runs for the Big Macs (6-3, 2-1).

Bethel Park 8, Upper St. Clair 3 — Kevin Kogler homered to help No. 4 Bethel Park (5-2, 2-1) win a Section 3-6A game.

Mt. Lebanon 11, Brashear 1 (5 inn.) — Cameron Knox homered, and Will McElhatten tripled as Mt. Lebanon (5-5, 2-1) won in Section 3-6A.

Gateway 3, Armstrong 1 — Jordan Stancovich and Ryan Margolis each knocked in runs as Gateway (6-2, 3-0) won in Section 1-5A. Joe Schulte and Luke Jackson combined on a six-hitter.

West Allegheny 2, Laurel Highlands 1 — Cameron Pankyo-Morris had an RBI single to help No. 3 West Allegheny (7-1, 4-0) win a Section 3-5A game.

Blackhawk 9, Quaker Valley 2 — Zach Zuchelli tripled in two runs to help No. 3 Blackhawk (6-2, 4-0) win a Section 2-4A game.

Ringgold 4, Belle Vernon 3 — Nick Kolano had two hits and two RBIs to help No. 2 Ringgold (4-3, 3-1) earn a Section 3-4A win. Tyler Steadman had three hits and all three RBIs for Belle Vernon (2-4, 2-2).

Steel Valley 10, East Allegheny 3 — Connor Vehec was 2 for 2 with three RBIs to lead No. 2 Steel Valley (5-4, 4-0) in a Section 1-3A win.

Beaver Falls 8, Ellwood City 3 — John Sabino had two hits and four RBIs to help Beaver Falls (2-5, 1-2) win a Section 2-3A game.

Freedom 3, Shady Side Academy 1 — Kevin Lawrence and Jake Bauman each had two hits and an RBI to help Freedom (5-3, 3-0) win in Section 2-3A.

Hopewell 10, North Catholic 6 — Alex Kunzmann was 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs as No. 1 Hopewell (6-2, 4-0) won a Section 2-3A game. Jake McGovern, Anthony LaSalle and Tyler Beck all had two hits.

Chartiers-Houston 8, Brownsville 4 — Matthew Rieger had three hits and two RBIs, and Austin Kuslock and Alex Siege also knocked in two runs to help Chartiers-Houston (5-2, 4-0) win a Section 1-2A game.

Seton LaSalle 15, Riverview 0 (3 inn.) — Nic Vari tossed a three-inning no-hitter to help Seton LaSalle (6-2, 1-1) earn a Section 3-2A win.

Eden Christian 15, Sto-Rox 0 (3 inn.) — Jacob Fisher threw a no-hitter with five strikeouts as Eden Christian (5-2) won a nonsection game. Andrew Penrod had three RBIs.

OLSH 14, Summit Academy 0 (5 inn.) — Nate Hart threw a no-hitter, and Alex Santacroce had five RBIs as OLSH (8-1) won a nonsection game.

Connellsville 7, Norwin 6 — Tanner Orndorff’s suicide squeeze plated the eventual winning run as part of a five-run sixth inning as Connellsville (2-1, 1-1) won in Section 2-6A. Derek Turkovski, Jayden Walker and Aidan Shephard all had extra-base hits for Norwin (5-2, 1-1).

Latrobe 4, Plum 0 — Noah Belak and Logan Gustafson each went 3 for 3 to guide Latrobe (5-4, 1-1) to a Section 2-6A victory. Jacob Bradish threw a two-hitter to earn the win.

Derry 6, Highlands 5 — Austin Siko had two hits and two RBIs, and Paul Koontz picked up a victory as Derry (2-5, 1-3) won in Section 1-4A. Noah Gillette hit a two-run single, and Zac Kuniak tripled for Highlands (4-4, 0-3).

Mt. Pleasant 4, Indiana 3 — Pete Billey had two hits and an RBI, and Joe Shrum doubled in a run as Mt. Pleasant (4-2, 3-1) won in Section 1-4A. Mike Secosky also doubled for the Vikings. Asher O’Connor allowed two hits to earn the win.

Yough 3, Greensburg Salem 1 — Vinny Martin’s three-run double in the sixth inning helped No. 4 Yough (6-2, 4-0) defeat No. 1 Greensburg Salem (6-1, 2-1) in a Section 1-4A game. Jarett Bach threw a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts for the Cougars. Matt Wicker struck out eight batters in the loss.

Keystone Oaks 10, Southmoreland 0 (5 inn.) — Mason Brooks threw a no-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Keystone Oaks (4-2, 3-1) to a Section 3-3A win over Southmoreland (2-5, 0-3). Nate Brestensky had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.

Brentwood 8, Jeannette 4 — Aidan Davis and Matt Veatch both had two hits to help Brentwood (5-1, 2-0) win in Section 3-2A. Zander Malik had three RBIs for the Jayhawks (5-2, 1-1).

Greensburg Central Catholic 9, St. Joseph 7 — In Section 3A, Paul Rice had two hits and two RBIs, and Zachary David doubled in two runs as No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (3-5, 2-0) earned a victory. Tyler Wood had three hits, including a double and triple, with an RBI for St. Joseph (3-3, 1-1).

Ligonier Valley 14, Homer-Center 4 (6 inn.) — John Beard went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, and Andrew Kuzemchak had two hits and three RBIs to guide Ligonier Valley (7-0, 6-0) to a District 6 Heritage Conference win.

Fox Chapel 4, Penn Hills 0 — Fox Chapel’s Noah Marks doubled in a run, and Gavin Donaldson added a run-scoring double in a three-run fourth en route to a Section 1-5A win over Penn Hills (0-5, 0-3). Mitch Miles gave up three hits over seven innings to earn the win for Fox Chapel (5-1, 3-1).

Valley 10, South Allegheny 2 — Evan Henry hit a three-run triple and finished with four RBIs as Valley won in Section 1-3A play. Dario Wolf and Cameron George had RBI singles for Valley (1-2, 1-2).

Kiski Area 13, Woodland Hills 1 (5 inn.) — Garrett Polka doubled to score Nick Smith, and Billy Perroz hit a two-RBI triple to ignite a 12-run third inning as the Cavaliers rolled to a Section 1-5A win. Ryne Wallace singled, tripled and added an RBI, and Zach Morrill doubled and notched an RBI for Kiski Area (4-4, 1-2).

Knoch 7, Freeport 3 — Guy DeLeonardis’ RBI single to left field scored Caleb Traggiai from third base, sparking a three-run fifth inning as Knoch rallied from behind to down nonsection foe Freeport. Travis Mowery picked up the win for Knoch (6-1). Freeport (5-4) pitcher Matt Mitchell took the loss.
