High school football roundup for Oct. 11, 2024: Woodland Hills holds off Gateway in Big East

Nico Mager ran for two touchdowns and Amir Smith caught a 12-yard TD pass from Cam Walter as Woodland Hills held on for a 28-27 victory over Gateway (3-5, 2-3) in a WPIAL Class 5A Big East Conference football game Friday night.
After Amari Gans scored on a 12-yard run with less than three minutes remaining, the Gators lined up for a game-tying extra-point, but Woodland Hills’ Earl Perry blocked the attempt to seal the Wolverines’ win.
Jacob Mroz booted field goals from 29 and 43 yards for Woodland Hills (6-2, 4-0).
Elvis Koutsakis threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a TD in the loss.

Class 6A
Central Catholic 59, Norwin 13 — Xxavier Thomas scored on a 70-yard pass from Jy’Aire Walls, a 30-yard interception return and a 73-yard punt return as top-ranked Central Catholic (6-2, 4-0) beat Norwin (2-6, 0-4) in Class 6A play. Walls threw for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson Huss and Jake Sincak each had TD receptions for Norwin.
North Allegheny 38, Canon-McMillan 6 — Brady Brinkley threw for 186 yards and one touchdown and ran for a 27-yard score as No. 2 North Allegheny (6-1, 4-1) defeated No. 5 Canon-McMillan (2-6, 1-3) in Class 6A play. Nick Humphries and James Donaldson scored on punt returns of 65 and 52 yards, respectively, for North Allegheny. Ty Jansma threw for 149 yards and a touchdown for Canon-McMillan.
Class 5A
Moon 55, Baldwin 26 — In the Allegheny Six Conference, Andrew Cross threw for 137 yards and two touchdowns as Moon (4-3, 1-2) beat Baldwin (0-8, 0-3).
North Hills 28, Shaler 10 — In Northeast Conference play, Julius Green rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns as North Hills (7-1, 3-1) beat Shaler (2-6, 0-3). Aaron Aversa tossed for 108 yards for Shaler.
Class 4A
Trinity 49, Chartiers Valley 21 — Nico Mauro ran for 353 yards and five touchdowns to lead Trinity (3-5, 2-1) to the Big Six Conference win at Chartiers Valley (3-4, 1-2). Owen Gardner added 116 rushing yards and one touchdown for Trinity.
Knoch 38, Hampton 14 — Codi Mullen threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 246 yards to lead Knoch (3-4, 2-1) to the Greater Allegheny Conference win over Hampton (3-5, 1-2). He also intercepted two passes on defense. Sam Skura, Ethan Rouleau, Vinny DeFelice and Keaton Oprosky scored touchdowns for the Knights. Porter Kelly threw for 174 yards and a touchdown for Hampton.
West Mifflin 44, Indiana 0 — Armand Hill ran for 190 yards and two touchdowns while Jeralle Mason added 144 rushing yards and two TDs as West Mifflin (3-5, 1-2) blanked Indiana (1-7, 0-3) in Greater Allegheny Conference play. Zahir Ismaeli threw for 122 yards and two touchdowns to Sincere Degree, who caught three passes for 122 yards.
Aliquippa 48, Blackhawk 13 — In a Parkway Conference game, Marques Council Jr. threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns to lead top-ranked Aliquippa (5-1, 3-0) to the win at Blackhawk (4-4, 1-2). Stephen Knallay tossed for 110 yards and a touchdown for Blackhawk.
Montour 47, Ambridge 13 — Trey Hopper threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns as No. 2 Montour (7-0, 3-0) scored 26 points in the first quarter on its way to defeating Ambridge (3-4, 0-3) in a Parkway Conference contest. A.J. Gerace threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns for Ambridge.
West Allegheny 32, New Castle 8 — West Allegheny (2-3, 2-1) beat New Castle (4-3, 0-3) in a Parkway Conference game.
Class 3A
East Allegheny 41, Valley 26 – East Allegheny (1-7, 1-4) earned its first victory of the season with a Class 3A Allegheny 7 Conference triumph at Valley (0-8, 0-4).
Avonworth 41, McGuffey 13 — Carson Bellinger threw for 115 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 2 Avonworth (6-2, 4-0) to the Western Hills Conference win against McGuffey (0-7, 0-5).
Beaver 48, North Catholic 10 — AhMir Jackson caught two touchdown passes, ran for a TD and scored on a 70-yard interception return as No. 4 Beaver (6-2, 3-1) beat North Catholic (3-5, 2-2) in the Western Hills Conference.
Central Valley 52, Quaker Valley 20 — In the Western Hills Conference, Mason Dixon ran for 170 yards and one touchdown as No. 3 Central Valley (4-4, 4-1) defeated Quaker Valley (1-6, 0-4). Steven Rutherford added 113 passing yards and two touchdowns, plus a rushing TD for Central Valley, which led 42-6 at the half.
Class 2A
South Allegheny 41, Apollo-Ridge 29 — Cam Epps ran for 182 yards and two touchdowns as No. 4 South Allegheny (7-1, 4-1) beat Apollo-Ridge (0-7, 0-4) in the Allegheny Conference. Ryan Cortes threw for 153 yards and three touchdowns for South Allegheny while teammate Drew Cook caught five passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Alex Clawson threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns for Apollo-Ridge, which led 29-13 at halftime.
South Park 33, Ligonier Valley 0 — Eric Doerue ran for 192 yards and two touchdowns and surpassed 4,000 career yards as No. 3 South Park (7-1, 4-0) shut out Ligonier Valley (3-5, 1-3) in an Allegheny Conference game. Robert Lenzi added 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns for South Park, which outgained Ligonier Valley, 368 yards to 100 yards.
Steel Valley 42, OLSH 7 — Donald Barksdale ran for 153 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 5 Steel Valley (5-3, 3-1) over OLSH (3-4, 2-3) in Allegheny Conference play. Da’Ron Barksdale added three rushing touchdowns.
Carlynton 40, Sto-Rox 0 — Devonte Dean threw for 120 yards and three touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown to lead Carlynton (4-4, 1-3) to the Century Conference win against Sto-Rox (0-7, 0-5).
Keystone Oaks 27, Waynesburg Central 7 — Billy Bricker ran for 118 yards and a touchdown as Keystone Oaks (4-3, 4-1) beat Waynesburg Central (4-4, 2-2) for the Century Conference win. Keystone Oaks outgained Waynesburg Central, 293 yards to 109 yards.
Washington 41, Charleroi 6 — Trenton Grooms and Ameer Nelson rushed for 129 and 117 yards, respectively, while Tristan Reed ran for three touchdowns as Washington (5-3, 3-1) beat Charleroi (1-7, 1-3) in Century Conference play.
Ellwood City 13, Riverside 9 — Chris Smiley threw for 94 yards and a touchdown and scored the go-ahead TD on a 1-yard run with 6:46 left in the game as No. 2 Ellwood City (7-0, 5-0) remained in first place in the Midwestern Athletic Conference with the win over Riverside (4-4, 3-2). Elijah Palmer-McCane ran for 148 yards for Ellwood City. Riverside’s Robert Janis rushed for 122 yards.
New Brighton 34, Beaver Falls 22 — Jayden Salada threw two touchdown passes for New Brighton (4-4, 2-3) in its Midwestern Athletic Conference win at Beaver Falls (0-8, 0-5).
Union 36, Freedom 23 — Lucas Stanley threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns as Union (2-5, 2-3) beat Freedom (2-4, 1-4) in the Midwestern Athletic Conference. Isaiah Leasha threw for 111 yards for Freedom.
Class A
Laurel 28, Shenango 14 — In the Big 7 Conference, Luca Santini threw for 171 yards and ran for two touchdowns as Laurel (4-4, 4-0) beat Shenango (1-5, 1-4). Sam Patton threw for 126 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another Shenango TD.
Neshannock 21, South Side 19 — Jino Mazzocio ran for 114 yards and three touchdowns as No. 4 Neshannock (7-1, 4-0) slipped past South Side (5-2, 3-1) in the Big 7 Conference.
Fort Cherry 49, Bishop Canevin 34 — Matt Sieg ran for five touchdowns and threw for another as top-ranked Fort Cherry (8-0, 5-0) beat Bishop Canevin (5-2, 3-1) in a Black Hills Conference matchup.
Monessen 34, Burgettstown 19 — Tyvaughn Kershaw ran for 258 yards and three touchdowns as No. 5 Monessen (7-1, 3-1) beat Burgettstown (1-6, 0-4) in the Black Hills Conference. Tavian Taylor added 134 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Monessen. Colton Country ran for 131 yards and two TDs for Burgettstown.
Serra Catholic 33, Chartiers-Houston 7 — De’reon Washington caught six passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns as Serra Catholic (2-5, 1-3) beat Chartiers-Houston (3-5, 1-4) in Black Hills Conference play.
Greensburg Central Catholic 51, Springdale 0 – The Centurions improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the Class A Eastern Conference with a shutout win at Springdale (0-7, 0-4).
Jeannette 42, Brentwood 41 – Kymon’e Brown threw for 343 yards and four touchdowns, ran for 162 yards and a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns and scored the winning points on a two-point run with seven seconds left in the game to lead Jeannette (5-3, 2-3) over Brentwood (4-4, 3-2) in the Eastern Conference. Cedric Davis threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns for Brentwood.
California 48, West Greene 14 — In the Tri-County South, Lee Qualk ran for 246 yards and four touchdowns to lead California (6-2, 5-0) to victory over West Greene (3-5, 3-2). Lane Allison threw for 126 yards and both West Greene touchdowns.
Carmichaels 19, Avella 6 — Cannon Bubka ran for 105 yards and Parker Hewitt rushed for two touchdowns as Carmichaels (3-3, 2-3) defeated Avella (3-5, 2-3) in Tri-County South play.
Jefferson-Morgan 44, Bentworth 12 — Houston Guseman threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 97 yards and two TDs to lead Jefferson-Morgan (8-0, 5-0) over Bentworth (4-4, 2-3) in the Tri-County South. Deakyn Dehoet caught seven passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns and scored on a 50-yard punt return while Johnny Gilbert ran for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Nonconference
Cornell 40, Rochester 22 — Khylil Johnson caught five passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 90 yards and a TD and threw a 65-yard scoring pass to Mikey Keyes as Cornell (6-2) defeated Rochester (2-5) in a nonconference matchup. Mark Stuckey Jr. threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns for the Raiders.
Freeport 35, Hopewell 25 — Amos Glenn ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns as Freeport (6-2) beat Hopewell (4-4) in nonconference play. Drew Ross added 109 rushing yards and three touchdowns for Freeport. James Armstrong threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 122 yards and a TD to pace Hopewell’s offense.
Meyersdale 42, Brownsville 8 — In nonconference play, Meyersdale (4-4) won on the road at Brownsville (0-6).
Northern Garrett (Md.) 48, Uniontown 6 — Northern Garrett (Md.) (3-3) defeated visiting Uniontown (3-4) in a nonconference game.
Penn Hills 42, Mt. Lebanon 34 — Jay’mere Ellis threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns and Naytel Mitchell rushed for 182 yards and three TDs as Class 5A Penn Hills (4-4) beat Class 6A Mt. Lebanon (1-7). Martel Palmer-Mollett caught eight passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns for Penn Hills. Pat Smith threw for 195 yards and one touchdown and ran for 213 yards and three TDs to lead Mt. Lebanon’s offense.
Pine-Richland 42, Latrobe 0 — In nonconference play, Aaron Strader threw four touchdown passes to lead Class 5A No. 1 Pine-Richland (7-0) to the win over Latrobe (4-4).
University (W.Va.) 31, Connellsville 13 — University (W.Va.) (3-3) picked up the nonconference win at Connellsville (2-6).
City League
Westinghouse 43, University Prep 6 — In City League play, Westinghouse (6-1, 4-0) beat University Prep (3-4, 3-1) in a game that was called near the end of the third quarter when the teams cleared the benches and a short melee broke out. Khalil Green threw four touchdown passes and ran for another for the Bulldogs.
Redbank Valley 42, Brashear 7 — Redbank Valley (6-2) defeated Brashear (0-8) in a nonconference game.
