High school roundup for April 26, 2018: Frazier, Monessen softball earn key section victories

Emi Curcio hit a walk-off in the ninth inning to give top-ranked Frazier a 5-4 win over No. 2 Chartiers-Houston in a Section 3-2A softball game Thursday.

The Commodores improved to 8-4 overall and 7-0 in section play, including a season sweep over the Bucs (9-2, 5-2).

Monessen 2, West Greene 1 — Cara Wheeler hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to lead No. 2 Monessen (9-1, 8-1) to a Section 2-A victory at No. 1 West Greene (9-3, 6-1).

Dana Vatakis scattered seven hits and had seven strikeouts in victory.

Mt. Lebanon 8, Bethel Park 6 — Megan Dietrick was 3 for 4 with a double to help Mt. Lebanon (5-4, 5-3) win in Section 1-6A.

Isabella Sciullo hit a three-run homer for Bethel Park (4-5, 3-5).

Hempfield 21, Penn Hills 3 (5 inn.) — Emma Hoffner was 3 for 3, and Ashley Orischak homered as No. 1 Hempfield (8-1, 7-0) won in Section 2-6A. Kylie Saus threw a five-hitter with five strikeouts.

Norwin 2, Fox Chapel 1 — Sara Russell's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh scored Victoria Shimko for the winning run for Norwin in a Section 2-6A game against Fox Chapel (4-6, 3-5). Shimko doubled twice for the Knights (4-2, 3-2).

North Allegheny 8, Butler 5 — Kristen Chomos hit a two-run home run to help North Allegheny (9-6, 6-1) win a Section 3-6A win.

Seneca Valley 14, Pine-Richland 1 — Kearson Wagner was 4 for 5 with a double and five RBIs to lead Seneca Valley (8-3, 6-2) to a Section 3-6A win.

Greensburg Salem 2, Plum 0 — Rena Caruso tossed a no-hitter with some help from her teammates as Greensburg Salem won a Section 1-5A game.

Junior outfielder Nikki Mellinger made a trio of highlight-reel catches to preserve the victory. Caruso had two strikeouts. Molly Zack and Chloe Perkins had RBIs for the Golden Lions (6-6, 5-4). Abby Froehlich struck out five batters and gave up seven hits for Plum (6-6, 5-5).

Kiski Area 10, Woodland Hills 2 — Alayna Mintz, Alexa Nagy and Kelsey Sofaly had three hits apiece to help Kiski Area (5-5, 4-5) cruise to a Section 1-5A win at Woodland Hills (0-9, 0-9). Sofaly finished a homer shy of the cycle and drove in three runs. Courtney Moyer had two hits, including a triple and drove in a run.

Penn-Trafford 15, Gateway 3 (5 inn.) — Brooke Cleland was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Allie Prady hit a three-run triple as No. 5 Penn-Trafford (11-2, 10-1) won in Section 1-5A. Morgan Nedley was 3 for 3 with two RBIs for the Warriors.

Moon 11, Chartiers Valley 0 (6 inn.) — Ciara Niglio threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts as No. 3 Moon (6-4, 6-3) won in Section 3-5A.

Derry 4, Uniontown 3 — Kam Kelly had two hits, including a double, to help Derry (3-4, 2-3) win a Section 1-4A game.

Indiana 8, Highlands 0 — Sara Zimmerman had three hits, including a home run, for Indiana (7-2, 5-2) in a Section 1-4A victory over Highlands (0-6, 0-5).

Mt. Pleasant 2, Knoch 0 — Carolyn Alincic threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts as No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (9-0, 7-0) won a Section 1-4A game. Chloe Poulich had an RBI triple for the Vikings. They also defeated Knoch, 13-3, in five innings in the second game of a doubleheader. Addy Kubasky homered, Chloe Poulich had three hits, including three triples, and Courtney Poulich had three RBIs.

Belle Vernon 3, Elizabeth Forward 2 — Bailey Parshall threw a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts as No. 4 Belle Vernon (9-2, 6-2) topped No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (11-2, 5-2). Jaelynn Clegg knocked in two runs for the Leopards.

Yough 18, Carrick 0 (4 inn.) — Kayley Westerman was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, and Nina Maroney was 3 for 3 with two RBIs as No. 2 Yough (11-2, 8-0) won in Section 2-4A. Heather Hyzy and Kierra Waywood also had two hits. Yough won the second game of the doubleheader 15-0 in four innings, as Westerman went 2 for 2 with four RBIs, and Waywood and Karlie Clark combined for a no-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Beaver 15, Central Valley 3 (6 inn.) — Lexi Russell had four hits, including two home runs and six RBIs as Beaver (6-1, 6-1) won in Section 3-4A.

Freeport 20, South Allegheny 2 (4 inn.) — Maya Gorghol homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs for No. 2 Freeport in a Section 1-3A win over South Allegheny (9-4, 4-3). The Yellowjackets (8-0, 6-0) scored four runs in the first inning and broke the game open with seven in the second. Ashleigh Schmidt doubled twice, Allison DeJidas homered and added three RBIs, and Jenna Manke doubled twice and knocked in two runs for the Yellowjackets.

Riverview 9, St. Joseph 5 — Carys Kenny-Howell had three hits, including a double, and struck out four batters over six innings as Riverview rallied to beat Class A No. 5 St. Joseph in Section 3-A.

Allura Jendrasik and Kelsey Phillips doubled and drove in a run for the Raiders (5-3, 4-3), who trailed 3-1 after the first inning but scored six runs over the next two frames.

Serena Edgar and Calley Neelan had a double apiece for St. Joseph (5-2, 4-2).

Ligonier Valley 17, United 0 (3 inn.) — Jane Garver threw a three-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts as Ligonier Valley (9-1, 8-0) won a District 6 Heritage Conference game. She also had three doubles and three RBIs. Lindsey Stormer and Lexie Petrof also knocked in three runs.

Baseball

Central Catholic 6, Pine-Richland 5 — Max Cebulak belted a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give No. 3 Central Catholic (9-4, 5-2) a win in Section 1-6A.

North Allegheny 1, Shaler 0 (17 inn.) — Caden Wood knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 17th inning as North Allegheny (8-3, 4-3) won a Section 1-6A game that was continued from Tuesday. Luke Trueman had three hits, and Colin Cain had four.

North Allegheny also defeated Seneca Valley, 5-2, in a Section 1-6A game. Trueman hit a two-run double.

Penn Hills 8, Connellsville 7 — Ken Rose was 4 for 4 with four RBIs as Penn Hills (3-6, 1-6) won a Section 2-6A game to break a 33-game section losing streak. Cameron Clark added three RBIs in victory.

Penn-Trafford 10, Hempfield 8 — Josh Spiegel, Zach Mancz and Mario Disso drove in two runs apiece and host Penn-Trafford (7-4, 5-2) scored six first-inning runs before holding off top-ranked Hempfield (11-3, 6-1) in a Section 2-6A game, ending the Spartans' five-game winning streak.

Traynor Granatire homered for Hempfield, which trailed 8-5 after two innings in a game that featured 14 walks and nine errors. Penn-Trafford outhit Hempfield, 10-9.

Bethel Park 9, Peters Township 1 — Kevin Kogler homered and doubled and Justin Meis scatted eight hits with four strikeouts as No. 5 Bethel Park (8-3, 7-1) won in Section 3-6A.

Mt. Lebanon 13, Allderdice 0 (5 inn.) — Mark Linkowski and Cam Kennedy each knocked in two runs as Mt. Lebanon (7-8, 5-4) won in Section 3-6A. Jack Palmerine allowed one hit and struck out five in 3 innings.

Hampton 13, Kiski Area 0 — Class 5A No. 4 Hampton (9-2, 5-2) belted 21 hits, including doubles from Phil Conti, Tyler Bischke, Casey Marshalwitz and Sean Mikulan en route to a Section 1 win. Ryne Wallace had a pair of hits for Kiski Area (1-6, 1-5).

Mars 3, Fox Chapel 1 — Fox Chapel pitcher Ryan Wagner limited Mars to two hits, but the Planets (7-4, 5-2) scored three runs in the third, which was enough to score a Section 1-5A victory. Noah Marks doubled for Fox Chapel (5-6, 4-4).

North Hills 15, Obama Academy 4 — Jordan Pitchford was 2 for 4 with four RBIs as North Hills (12-2, 8-1) won in Section 1-5A.

West Allegheny 11, Carrick 0 (5 inn.) — Shea Downing was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, and Logan Scheider and Austin Hendrick each knocked in two runs as No. 1 West Allegheny (8-0, 8-0) won in Section 2-5A.

Franklin Regional 2, Woodland Hills 0 — Palmer Jackson threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts, and Jake Williams was 2 for 3 with a double, as Franklin Regional (8-3, 6-2) won in Section 3-5A.

Laurel Highlands 12, Thomas Jefferson 1 (6 inn.) — Travis Sankovich was 3 for 3, Tan Erminio was 2 for 2 with three RBIs and Evan Voyten added a two-run double as No. 2 Laurel Highlands (9-0, 9-0) won in Section 3-5A.

Knoch 12, Deer Lakes 0 (6 inn.) — Jack Bartek blanked the Lancers over six innings and hit a homer as No. 3 Knoch beat Deer Lakes in Section 1-4A. Ben McMillen doubled and homered for the Knights (9-1, 8-1). Jake McCaskey doubled for Deer Lakes (6-5, 3-4).

Yough 6, Derry 1 — Jarett Bach threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts to guide Yough (5-6, 5-5) to a win in Section 1-4A. Dom Koch had two hits and two RBIs, and Steve Manon added two hits and one RBI in the win.

Blackhawk 14, Quaker Valley 2 — Mike Turconi was 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs to lift No. 1 Blackhawk (11-0, 9-0) to a Section 2-4A win. Winning pitcher John Nixon and Jarrett Wright each had three hits and an RBI.

Elizabeth Forward 9, West Mifflin 8 — Jacob Prah had two doubles and two RBIs, and Evan Lewis added three RBIs as Elizabeth Forward (5-9, 2-7) won in Section 3-4A.

South Side 8, Ellwood City 1 — Casey Jones threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts, and Ethan Woodling was 3 for 4 with three RBIs as South Side (5-3, 4-3) won in Section 2-3A.

Riverview 6, Northgate 3 — Jordan Zatawski struck out nine batters to lead Riverview (3-6, 2-6) past Section 3-2A foe Northgate (0-6, 0-6).

Serra Catholic 14, Carlynton 4 (6 inn.) — Zach Bowen was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Mark Black homered as No. 1 Serra Catholic (12-0, 8-0) rolled to a Section 3-2A win. Patrick Brennan had three RBIs.

Eden Christian 7, Leechburg 3 — Corey Kerecz had two hits and two RBIs for Leechburg (2-8, 2-5), but Eden Christian (5-3, 5-2) scored twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to snap a tie and pull away for a Section 1-A win.

St. Joseph 10, Summit Academy 4 — Eli Swierczewski doubled and drove in a run, and pitcher Hayden Mallin picked up the win as St. Joseph (2-6) rolled past nonsection foe Summit Academy (1-9).

Ligonier Valley 17, United 4 — Ethan Boring, Andrew Kuzemchak and Alex Caldwell all had three RBIs as Ligonier Valley (5-3, 4-2) won a District 6 Heritage Conference game.
