High school roundup for April 26, 2024: Undefeated Riverside thumps North Catholic

Hunter Garvin hit a three-run homer to lead Riverside to a 12-1 win over North Catholic in nonsection baseball Friday afternoon.

Darren McDade doubled and drove in a pair and winning pitcher Zack Hare gave up one unearned run in three innings for the Panthers (10-0). Josef Safar doubled for the Trojans (7-4).

Avella 15, Mapletown 5 – Bryce Wright went 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles, a triple and three RBIs, Brian Martos doubled and drove in three runs, and winning pitcher Cole Jaworowski doubled and knocked in a run as Avella (8-3, 7-3) cruised to a Section 1-A win. A.J. Vanata homered for Mapletown (2-10, 0-8).

Charleroi 10, Brownsville 9 – Jake Corrin smacked a walk-off two-run single as Charleroi (9-4) scored five runs on the bottom of the seventh to erase a 9-5 deficit to prevail over Brownsville (0-11) in nonsection play. Jace Pager and Tyler O’Neil each hit an RBI double while Brock Henderson got the win for the Cougars. Harlan Davis doubled and drove in two for the Falcons.

Derry 13, Apollo-Ridge 1 – Winning pitcher John Wasnick went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Brady Angus slapped a triple to lead Derry (4-6) to a nonsection win. Jacob Fairbanks doubled and drove in a run while Alexander Clawson went 2 for 3 with a double for Apollo-Ridge (2-10).

Fox Chapel 6, Pine-Richland 2 – Troy Susnak drove in two runs, Mitchell Epstein singled and knocked in a run, and Blake Krushinski doubled as Fox Chapel (11-3) defeated Pine-Richland (14-3) in nonsection play. Peyton Ford drove in two runs for the Rams. Justin Ling pitched the Foxes to victory.

Jefferson-Morgan 4, California 0 – John Woodward struck out 11 in 5 ⅓ innings while Brenton Barnhart and Brock Bayles each hit an RBI double as Jefferson-Morgan (6-6, 4-6) shut out California (3-10, 2-6) for a Section 1-A win. Chase Cicchitto doubled for the Trojans.

Knoch 7, Freeport 0 – Hunter Lang pitched a shutout and Kyle Morgan and Aidan Jones each knocked in a run as Knoch (4-8) blanked Freeport (3-10) in nonsection play. Danny King doubled for the Yellowjackets.

Latrobe 6, Peters Township 0 – Brody Rumon had two RBIs and Hayden Porterfield singled and drove in a run while Dominick Cararini picked up the win for Latrobe (13-1) in a nonsection shutout of Peters Township (6-9).

Mohawk 8, Central Valley 3 – Aidan Bowser doubled and drove in a run and Bobby Fadden went 3 for 4 with an RBI as Mohawk (13-1) beat Central Valley (8-6) in a nonsection matchup. Drew Wrona got the win for Mohawk.

New Castle 4, Champion (OH) 0 – Phillip Laurenza homered and Dom Mrozek, JT Warren and Carlo DeSalvo combined on a six-hit shutout to lead New Castle (1-14) to a nonsection win.

North Allegheny 6, Shaker Heights 4 – Owen Schall doubled and drove in two runs and Matthew Parreaguirre hit two singles to lead North Allegheny (12-3) to a nonsection win over Shaker Heights.

OLSH 9, Freedom 0 – Brandon Brazell doubled twice and drove in three and Sean Hudac had a double and three RBIs as OLSH (10-4, 8-1) shut out Freedom (8-6, 6-4) in Section 2-2A. Quinn Santelli struck out seven in five innings for the win while Vann Kavals fanned four in two innings for the save for the Chargers.

Penn Hills 13, Woodland Hills 0 – Logan Bollinger and Connor Bollinger each went 2 for 3 with four RBIs while Edward Bowser struck out 11 in five innings as Penn Hills (1-11) shut out Woodland Hills (0-11) in nonsection play.

Penn-Trafford 6, Connellsville 4 – Ian Temple gave Penn-Trafford (12-1) a late lead with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh as the Warriors beat Connellsville (7-8) in nonsection play. Ethan Septak drove in a pair of runs and Zach Feldman got the win for Penn-Trafford. Kace Shearer doubled and drove in a run for the Falcons.

Shenango 14, Laurel 8 – Christian Anterock went 2 for 5 with a double and four RBIs and Treyton Ross was 3 for 5 and drove in three as Shenango (7-6) rolled to a nonsection win. William Zwolenik and Luca Santini each knocked in a pair of runs for Laurel (7-7). Benny Santangelo earned the win for the Wildcats.

Trinity 10, Albert Gallatin 0 – Jonah Williamson had three hits and an RBI and Cam Schofield doubled and drove in a pair and was the winning pitcher for Trinity (7-5) in a nonsection win. Kaden Hathaway added two hits and a RBI for the Hillers. Jason Myers doubled for Albert Gallatin (3-12).

West Allegheny 7, Chartiers Valley 0 – Will Gubba tripled, doubled and knocked in four runs and Derek Curry struck out six in 4⅓ innings as West Allegheny (10-2) blanked Chartiers Valley (8-3) in a nonsection matchup. Colton Prosperi had a base hit for the Colts.

Apollo-Ridge 22, Brentwood 6 – Jocelyn Snyder went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and five RBIs and Jaden Mull and Olivia Saxion doubled and drove in two runs apiece for Apollo-Ridge (7-4, 7-2) in a Section 2-2A win over Brentwood (3-8, 2-7).

Armstrong 11, Franklin Regional 3 – Jordyn Klingensmith went 4 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, and Abigail Bauer and Emma Paul each hit a solo homer to lead Armstrong (12-1, 8-1) to a Section 2-5A win. Toryn Fulton went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs for Franklin Regional (7-8, 4-5). Madison Baker struck out 11 for the River Hawks.

Avonworth 6, Burrell 3 – Emma Obersteiner and Layne Shinsky each had two hits and an RBI and Alivia Lantzy struck out nine in seven innings to lead Avonworth (8-3, 6-1) to a Section 1-3A win. Bella Stewart singled, doubled and drove in a run and Cierra Molnar had two RBIs for Burrell (8-5, 6-3).

Bentworth 15, Burgettstown 3 – Nora Lindley belted a three-run homer, Willow Eckels mashed a two-run home run and Zoie McDonald went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs as Bentworth (11-2, 9-0) beat Burgettstown (5-8, 4-5) in Section 3-2A. Layla Sherman doubled and drove in two for the Blue Devils. Winning pitcher Sydney Gonglik struck out 14 and went 4 for 4 with a triple, double and three RBIs for the Bearcats.

Carmichaels 7, Avella 2 – Carys McConnell had a two-run single and a two-run homer for Carmichaels (9-2, 6-1) in a Section 2-A win. Haleigh Rush hit two singles and drove in a run for Avella (3-12, 0-10).

Central Valley 15, Beaver Falls 0 – Sonya Householder hit a home run, Daelyn Dreher tripled and Isabela Skrlac hit three doubles and drove in three runs for Central Valley (8-2, 6-2) in a Section 2-3A win over Beaver Falls (2-9, 1-8).

Chartiers-Houston 10, Mapletown 0 – Meadow Ferri struck out 12 batters as she threw a five-inning perfect game for Chartiers-Houston (10-1, 8-0) in a Section 2-A contest against Mapletown (4-7, 4-5). Ella Richey went 4 for 4 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs for the Bucs.

Chartiers Valley 14, North Catholic 3 – Kaitlyn Truong hit two triples and drove in six runs and Annabelle Helt had a single, triple and three RBIs to lead Chartiers Valley (9-2, 7-1) to a Section 3-4A win. Natalia Rushak hit a single and double for North Catholic (5-5, 2-5).

Connellsville 2, Bethel Park 0 – Tagan Basinger had two singles and an RBI and Kameron Kantorik doubled to lead Connellsville (10-5, 6-3) to a Section 4-5A win. Julia Miller hit two singles for Bethel Park (7-7, 5-4). Iris Burd threw a three-hit shutout for the Falcons.

Derry 2, Ligonier Valley 1 – Sophia Doherty hit a two-run home run and Haylee Myers struck out eight as Derry (3-11, 1-8) toppled Ligonier Valley (10-2, 7-2) in Section 3-3A. Abby Springer drove in a run while Cheyenne Piper fanned 10 for the Rams. Kali Henigin doubled for the Trojans.

Elizabeth Forward 15, Albert Gallatin 0 – Carlee Soukup went 2 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs and Alivia Grimm hit a two-run double for Elizabeth Forward (11-1, 9-0) in a Section 2-4A win over Albert Gallatin (1-10, 1-9).

Ellwood City 9, Quaker Valley 1 – Keira Rozanski and Sara Schwarz hit a home run apiece for Ellwood City (13-2, 7-2) in a Section 2-3A win. Grace Carver singled and drove in a run for Quaker Valley (4-8, 2-7).

Frazier 11, St. Joseph 1 – Grace Vaughn went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs, Addison Hiles tripled and drove in three runs and Emilia Bednar homered for Frazier (8-0, 8-0) in a Section 3-A win. Anna Kreinbrook went 2 for 2 with a triple for St. Joseph (1-8, 1-8).

Freeport 16, Shady Side Academy 1 – Sydney Selker struck out 11, allowed one hit in four innings and hit a home run to lead Freeport (7-5, 4-3) to a Section 1-3A win. Mya Kearns homered for Shady Side Academy (1-7, 1-7). Abby DeJidas hit a double, triple and drove in three runs and Reese Selker had two doubles and three RBIs for the Yellowjackets.

Hampton 11, Montour 1 – Marissa Snyder and Katelyn Dubee doubled and drove in two runs apiece and Sarah Dietz went 2 for 2 with three RBIs to lead Hampton (11-1, 10-0) to a Section 3-4A win. Giacinta Labrie hit two singles for Montour (5-6, 5-5).

Hempfield 6, Butler 1 – Peyton Heisler hit a two-run homer and Lauren Howard doubled and drove in two runs to lead Hempfield (12-1, 10-1) to a Section 1-6A win. Lily Vicari hit a home run for Butler (3-9, 2-9).

Indiana 5, Highlands 1 – Olivia Zimmerman struck out 12, Kylee Cass hit two doubles and Melia Jarvie drove in two runs to lead Indiana (10-3, 8-0) to a Section 1-4A win. Gabby Chambers hit two singles and drove in a run for Highlands (1-9, 1-6).

Jeannette 10, Leechburg 0 – Grace Stein threw a six-inning, one-hit shutout and struck out 16 to lead Jeannette (10-0, 8-0) to a Section 3-A win over Leechburg (4-6, 3-5). Abigail Shaw tripled and had three RBIs for the Jayhawks.

Keystone Oaks 12, Brownsville 3 – Kennadi Smith and Kylie Stahl doubled and drove in two runs apiece to lead Keystone Oaks (5-7, 2-6) to a Section 4-3A win. Sarah Sawka hit three singles for Brownsville (3-6, 2-4).

Knoch 16, Woodland Hills 0 – Kalia Purcell tripled and drove in three runs and McKenna Brailey and Kaylee Bachman drove in two runs apiece for Knoch (11-3, 8-1) in a Section 1-4A win over Woodland Hills (0-8, 0-7).

Laurel 16, Aliquippa 0 ; Laurel 15, Aliquippa 0 – Laurel (10-4, 8-2) swept a doubleheader against Aliquippa (1-10, 0-10) in Section 1-2A. In Game 1, Riley Balcom tossed a three-inning perfect game while Lexi Krol smacked a three-run double and both Adide Deal and Ivy Pancher tripled and drove in two runs for Laurel.

In Game 2, Mayci Lang struck out seven and gave up just one walk in a three-inning no-hitter as Hayden Seifert doubled and drove in four runs and Contessa Contelesse went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs for the Spartans.

Mt. Pleasant 15, Geibel 2 – Gracie Etling hit four singles and drove in four runs and Kaydence Perry had three hits and an RBI for Mt. Pleasant (10-6) in a nonsection win. Carly Surma went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI for Geibel.

Neshannock 10, Shenango 0 – Addy Frye went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and Jaidon Nogay homered to lead Neshannock (13-0, 10-0) to a Section 1-2A win over Shenango (7-6, 7-3).

North Hills 10, Fox Chapel 0 – Winning pitcher Abigail Sutton went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs and Lily Adamski tripled and drove in two runs for North Hills (10-2, 7-1) in a Section 1-5A win over Fox Chapel (5-7, 4-5).

OLSH 18, Fort Cherry 0 – Leann Walzer had a single, double and three RBIs and Morgan O’Brien and Lilli Wamsley drove in four runs apiece for OLSH (8-3, 6-1) in a Section 3-2A win over Fort Cherry (0-11, 0-10).

Penn-Trafford 17, Gateway 0 – Allison Pokrant and Allyson Paulone combined on a three-inning no-hitter for Penn-Trafford (9-4, 7-2) in a Section 2-5A win over Gateway (0-13, 0-10). Mackenzie Cox hit a three-run homer for the Warriors.

Pine-Richland 5, Norwin 2 – Marissa DeLuca hit the go-ahead RBI single and winning pitcher Izzy Sulesky followed with a two-run double as Pine-Richland (7-7, 6-5) scored three runs in the seventh to win in Section 1-6A. Bailey Snoweberger had two hits for Norwin (7-8, 6-7).

Plum 7, Penn Hills 0 – Riley Stephans threw a no-hitter, striking out 13, and hit a home run to lead Plum (9-4, 6-3) to a Section 1-5A win over Penn Hills (3-6, 1-6). Madelyn Wagner had a double, home run and three RBIs for the Mustangs.

Seneca Valley 9, North Allegheny 6 – Anna Kalkowski and Neve Miller had two singles and a double apiece to lead Seneca Valley (14-0, 11-0) to a Section 1-6A win. Carlyn Vaupel and Taylor Condiotte homered for North Allegheny (8-4, 8-4).

Serra Catholic 13, Greensburg Central Catholic 12 – Maria Goldstein had a single, double and four RBIs, Madisyn Zigarovich doubled and drove in three runs and Cassidy Tarhan tripled to lead Serra Catholic (9-1, 8-0) to a Section 2-2A win. Makenzee Kenney went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and four RBIs and Macee Magil hit a double and triple for Greensburg Central Catholic (5-4, 5-4).

South Park 6, Seton LaSalle 0 – Sydney Sekely fanned 13, hitting 300 strikeouts for her career, in a Section 4-3A win for South Park (12-1, 8-0). Kaitlyn Polk had a single, triple and four RBIs for the Eagles. Meadow Kennard doubled for Seton LaSalle (3-7, 2-5).

South Side 19, Rochester 1 – Alison DeLong homered and finished with six RBIs, Karis Dunham smashed a home run and drove in four and Madison Morrow added three RBIs and also homered as South Side (8-3, 7-1) battered Rochester (3-9, 2-8) in Section 1-A. Emily Weese doubled in Rochester’s only run. Winning pitcher Maya Ringhoff doubled and knocked in three for South Side.

Southmoreland 10, South Allegheny 2 – Gwen Basinger and Riley Puckey hit a home run apiece and Taylor Doppleheuer hit two triples and drove in three runs for Southmoreland (11-2, 6-2) in a Section 3-3A win. Cadence McBride and Gina Connors each doubled for South Allegheny (5-8, 3-6).

Steel Valley 15, Ellis 0 – Aubrey Guciardo had two triples and three RBIs and Abby Curran drove in three runs to lead Steel Valley (5-8, 4-5) to a Section 2-2A win. Nadia Commodore singled for Ellis (0-8, 0-8).

Trinity 7, Thomas Jefferson 6 – Ally Krenzelak went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs, Hanna Suhoski hit a double and home run and drove in two runs and Remmie Seitz homered to lead Trinity (10-4, 6-3) to a Section 4-5A win. Emma DeSimone hit a home run for Thomas Jefferson (7-6, 5-4).

Uniontown 4, Greensburg Salem 3 — Winning pitcher Emmaleigh Noah struck out 10 for Uniontown (8-2, 8-1), which scored four runs without the benefit of a hit in a Section 2-4A victory. Gionnah Ruffner doubled and homered, and Alle Scarpa struck out 15 for Greensburg Salem (4-10, 2-7).

West Mifflin 2, McKeesport 1 – Rylie Dobnak struck out 12 and Jasalin Guenther hit a single and double for West Mifflin (8-6, 5-4) in a Section 1-4A win. Katherine Hrinda doubled for McKeesport (6-8, 2-7).

Boys volleyball

Norwin 3, Upper St. Clair 0 – Jackson Genicola had 12 kills and Lucas Churchfield added 10 digs to lead Norwin to a 25-20, 25-22, 25-19 nonsection win.

Girls lacrosse

Plum 16, Ellis School 4 – Rayla Smith had four goals and three assists and Carly Venanzi added four goals and one assist to lead Plum to a Section 1-2A win. Bella DeFrancesca had three goals for the Mustangs.
