High school roundup for April 3, 2019: McGovern leads No. 1 Hopewell past No. 5 Beaver Falls

Winning pitcher Jake McGovern drove in four runs with a home run and two doubles as Class 3A No. 1 Hopewell edged No. 5 Beaver Falls, 9-7, in a Section 2 contest.
Tyler Beck tripled for Hopewell (3-2, 1-0), which led 7-0 after four innings.
Dayln Brickner had three hits and Cameron Kern doubled for Beaver Falls (2-3, 0-1).
Rochester 1, Cornell 0 — Hayden Hoffman gave up one hit, walked one and struck out 13, but took the loss as Rochester won a Section 1-A game. A wild pitch in the fourth inning was all Rochester (2-2, 1-0) needed in the win. Blaine Sams had two hits for Cornell (1-2, 0-1). Winning pitcher Zane Jeffers struck out nine.
Seton LaSalle 7, South Fayette 3 — Gabe Finale had three hits and two RBIs as the Rebels knocked off Class 5A No. 2 South Fayette in a nonsection contest. Seton LaSalle (3-1) scored three runs in the first inning. South Fayette (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season.
Shaler 4, Butler 3 — Winning pitcher Nick Rispoli had two doubles and struck out 11 batters to help Class 5A No. 5 Shaler (4-2) to a nonsection win.
Blackhawk 4, Central Valley 2 — Winning pitcher Marco Borello hit a two-run home run, and No. 4 Blackhawk (3-2, 1-0) edged Central Valley in a Section 2-4A contest.
Ringgold 7, McKeesport 0 — Returning PIAA Class 4A champion Ringgold got a stellar pitching performance from Chase Angotti, who threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts as the Rams (2-2, 1-0) opened Section 3-4A win a victory.
Moon 9, Mt. Lebanon 5 — A six-run third inning helped Class 5A No. 4 Moon (4-0) win a nonsection contest. Jeff Dengler had three hits for Mt. Lebanon (3-4).
Beth-Center 11, Southmoreland 6 — Anthony Dellapenna had a double, home run and two RBIs, and Beth-Center (1-2, 1-0) won a Section 3-3A road game. Ben Zimmerman had two hits and two RBIs for Southmoreland (1-2, 0-1).
Ligonier Valley 15, Saltsburg 2 (5 inn.) — Sam Sheeder had two three-run home runs, and Ligonier Valley defeated its fifth consecutive PIAA District 6 Heritage Conference opponent.
Sheeder homered in the first and the fourth inning. The Rams scored 12 runs in the fourth inning and have outscored opponents, 65-5, this season.
Sullivan Schueltz had two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored, and Andrew Kuzemchak had two hits including a double.
Knoch 6, Derry 3 — Issac Love had one hit and one RBI as No. 2 Knoch defeated Derry in Section 1-4A. Sean McGill also had one hit and one RBI, and Jack Bartek picked up the win for Knoch (4-0, 1-0). Donte Klapchar doubled for Derry (1-2, 0-1), and Josh Ulery took the loss.
Mt. Pleasant 10, Highlands 0 (6 inn.) — The Vikings used a five-run first inning and the two-hit pitching of Jared Wagner for a Section 1-4A victory. Pete Billey and Joe Shrum had doubles for Mt. Pleasant (2-1, 1-0). Wagner struck out seven. Mike Magdenic got the loss for Highlands (3-2, 0-1).
Yough 7, Indiana 6 — Despite committing seven errors, Yough managed to pull out a win in Section 1-4A. The Cougars scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to clinch the win.
Jarret Bach had two hits, and Noah Manns a double for the Cougars (4-4, 1-0).
Kiski School 9, Apollo-Ridge 5 — Kiski School scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning after Apollo-Ridge tied the score with a five-run top of the fifth in a nonsection matchup. Braden Astolos singled twice and drove in two runs, and pitcher Bradley Schrock gave up four runs over two innings to take the loss for Apollo-Ridge (1-3). Griffin Donohue had a double and single for the Cougars.
Greensburg Salem 16, East Allegheny 1 (3 inn.) — Brayden Merichko and Hayden Teska each had three RBIs, Aaren Putt went 3 for 3, and Class 4A No. 1 Greensburg Salem (4-0) breezed to a nonsection victory.
Winning pitcher Noah Sweeney had two hits, including a double, and Matt Wicker had two singles.
Seneca Valley 13, Latrobe 3 (6 inn.) — Gabe Lawson drove in four runs with a triple and single, and Class 6A No. 1 Seneca Valley pulled away for a nonsection victory. The Raiders (5-1) had two five-run innings. Ben Rafferty had a double and two RBIs for Latrobe (4-2).
Franklin Regional 11, Armstrong 1 (6 inn.) — Tom Kegerreis drove in two runs with a homer and Zach Seaman had three RBIs, and Franklin Regional (4-1, 1-0) won its Section 1-5A opener. Jake Williams and Matt Fitzmaurice hit doubles for the Panthers to aid winning pitcher Palmer Jackson.
Jeannette 8, Leechburg 4 — The Jayhawks scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning for a nonsection victory. Seth Howard, tripled, doubled, singled and had one RBI and Zander Malik doubled and drove in four runs. Drake Petrillo doubled and had one RBI for Jeannette (3-1). Nathan Shinko had two hits for Leechburg (0-3).
Pine-Richland 8, Norwin 7 — Aiden Shephard drove in three runs with a homer and double, but Norwin’s late rally came up short in a nonsection game at Class 6A No. 5 Pine-Richland. Logan Liebdzinski, Owen Sabol and Jayden Walker had doubles for the Knights (3-1). Wesley Byrd had a home run, triple and three RBIs for the Rams (4-3), and Matt Wood and Josh Scherer each hit doubles.
Softball
Hopewell 18, Central Valley 17 — Katelyn Ramaley had five hits, including a double to help Hopewell outslug Central Valley in a nonsection game. Kylie Magnotta had four hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs for Central Valley. The teams combined for 35 runs and 38 hits. Central Valley had nine errors.
Deer Lakes 6, Derry 2 — Katrina Taliani had three singles, drove in one run and scored one run as Deer Lakes defeated Derry in Section 1-3A. Keeghan Cook also had two hits and two RBIs, and Jenna Bisegna picked up the win for Deer Lakes (2-5, 2-0).
Kam Kelly had two singles and scored two runs for Derry (1-3, 1-1).
Leechburg 11, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 (5 inn.) — Emma Ritchie pitched a one-hitter, and the Blue Devils broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning as Class A No. 4 Leechburg won big in Section 3-A.
Ritchie singled, doubled and drove in three runs, and Aubry Skeel doubled and added an RBI for Leechburg (3-0, 2-0). Pitcher Bella Skatell picked up the loss, and the Centurions’ (1-3, 1-1) lone run came on a Leechburg error.
West Greene 15, Monessen 0 (3 inn.) — The 2018 WPIAL Class A finalists squared off with the returning champions, No. 1 West Greene (2-2,1-0), rolling to a Section 2-A victory. Winning pitcher Jade Renner had three hits, including a double, for the Pioneers.
Losing pitcher Hannah Yorty had Monessen’s lone hit, a triple.
