Hunter Wilson went 3 for 3 with an RBI and winning pitcher Jake Rynd struck out seven in 6⅔ innings as Neshannock defeated Riverside, 5-2, in Section 1-3A baseball Tuesday, ending the defending WPIAL and PIAA champs’ winning streak at 36 games.
Lucca Mezzanotte had two hits and two RBIs and Giovanni Valentine doubled and drove in a run for the Lancers (8-7, 6-3). Sam Barber singled and doubled and Bo Fornataro tripled for the Panthers (11-1, 9-1).
Apollo-Ridge 4, Brentwood 3 – Logan Bianco went 2 for 2 with a home run and Zach Meyers had two hits and an RBI for Apollo-Ridge (4-11, 3-8) in a Section 3-2A win. Aiden Gordon had two hits and an RBI for Brentwood (6-9, 2-8).
Avonworth 11, Steel Valley 0 – Avonworth (12-7, 8-2) plated nine runs in the top of the second to pull away for a Section 2-3A win over Steel Valley (3-10, 2-8). Mason Metz tripled and drove in three for the Antelopes and Cooper Scharding also tripled and drove in a run.
Beaver 6, Blackhawk 5 – Maddox Tanner hit the game-tying RBI single and RJ Sebek followed with a walk-off run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth to lead Beaver (7-11, 3-7) to a Section 1-4A win. Dylan Smith went 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs for Blackhawk (6-8, 4-6).
Bethel Park 6, Trinity 4 – Noah LeJeune went 2 for 4 with a solo home run, Ryan Tierney tripled and drove in a run and Ryan Walsh got the win as Bethel Park (9-5-1, 7-3) clinched the Section 2-5A title outright. Cam Schofield went 3 for 3 for Trinity (7-7, 5-5).
Bishop Canevin 9, Carlynton 3 – Dom Varley tripled, doubled and knocked in three runs and Tyler Maddix drove in a pair as Bishop Canevin (11-3, 10-2) beat Carlynton (11-7, 6-4) in Section 3-1A. Dylan Sunderland doubled and had an RBI for the Cougars. Jackson Maddix struck out 10 in five innings for the Crusaders.
Burgettstown 19, Washington 9 – Carson Tkalcevic singled, doubled and drove in four runs, Sam Elich also singled and doubled, and William Stevenson had two hits and two RBIs for Burgettstown (8-3, 8-1) in a Section 1-2A win. Ian Callan went 3 for 4 with four RBIs for Washington (6-8, 4-6).
Burrell 9, Deer Lakes 0 – Isaac Lacinski and Brayden Mell combined on a four-hit shutout and Ryan Wass singled and doubled for Burrell (9-6, 8-4) in Section 3-3A. Mell also doubled and drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Cochran had two hits for Deer Lakes (5-10, 3-7).
California 8, Avella 3 – Kaden Weston doubled and drove in a pair of runs and Logan Hartley went 2 for 3 with an RBI as Caden Monticelli got the win for California (4-11, 3-7) against Avella (9-4, 8-4) in Section 1-A. Brayden Fuller singled and drove in a run for the Eagles.
Central Catholic 12, Canon-McMillan 2 – Ben Peterson went 2 for 2 with a homer and two RBIs, Gavin Kelly went 3 for 3 with a triple and a pair of RBIs, and Chase Gelpi was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI as Central Catholic (9-9, 6-8) defeated Canon-McMillan (7-9, 7-7) in Section 2-6A.
Chartiers-Houston 9, Frazier 5 – Anthony Romano singled, doubled and drove in a run and Nathan Christy and Nico Filosi each had two RBIs to help Chartiers-Houston (8-7, 8-2) to a Section 1-2A win. Dylan Keilbach went 3 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs for Frazier (4-10, 2-7).
Elizabeth Forward 11, McKeesport 0 – Charlie Nigut went 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI and Joseph Crovak threw a five-inning, four-hit shutout to lead Elizabeth Forward (8-7, 4-6) past McKeesport (2-13, 2-8) in Section 3-4A.
Ellwood City 15, Beaver Falls 0 – Aaron Lake and Jaxon Rozanski each drove in three runs while Nathan Kennedy picked up the win as Ellwood City (8-7, 4-6) cruised to a Section 1-3A win over Beaver Falls (0-12, 0-12).
Hopewell 12, Ambridge 11 – Charles Smetana delivered the game-tying RBI single and Lucas Walton followed with a walk-off run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth as Hopewell (8-8, 4-6) clinched a playoff berth in Section 1-4A win. Walton also homered and finished with four RBIs. Joey Pugh doubled, homered and drove in three runs for Ambridge (5-8, 3-7).
Indiana 12, Highlands 2 – Landon Kodman had two hits and four RBIs and Mark Collinger singled twice, doubled and drove in two runs for Indiana (9-7, 7-3) in a Section 4-4A win. Kyle Krason doubled and drove in a pair for Highlands (2-14, 1-9).
Knoch 6, Hampton 5 – Brady Wozniak hit a two-run walk-off single as Knoch (7-8, 4-6) clinched the final playoff spot in Section 4-4A over Hampton (7-7, 4-6). Jacob Stallsmith singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Knights. Ryan Scully had two doubles and an RBI for the Talbots.
Laurel 9, Freedom 4 – Jacob McBride and Brayden Faulikner each had two hits and two RBIs for Laurel (9-7, 7-5) in a Section 2-2A win over Freedom (8-8, 6-6).
Leechburg 14, Rochester 0 – Garrett Jones, Rocco Vigna and Chase Henry drove in two runs each to help Leechburg (9-6, 8-4) top Rochester (4-9, 4-6) in Section 2-A. Henry and Mason Bertino had two hits apiece. Bertino tripled and had an RBI.
McGuffey 2, Yough 1 – Mason Piatt reached on a single and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Sam Stout in the bottom of the fifth to lead McGuffey (6-6, 6-4) to a Section 4-3A win. Winning pitcher Ryan Keith struck out eight in six innings. Nate Bell singled and drove in a run for Yough (5-9, 4-5). Hard-luck losing pitcher Landon O’Donnell struck out seven in six innings.
Mohawk 7, Shenango 0 – Aidan Bowser knocked in two runs, Keigan Hopper doubled and drove in a run and Briar Crawford struck out five in six innings as Mohawk (15-1, 10-0) shut out Shenango (7-8, 5-5) in Section 1-3A. Joey Campoli doubled for the Wildcats. Mohawk’s Jay Wrona tripled in the second for his 100th career hit.
Moon 3, New Castle 2 – Caden Schmidt singled and later scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh in a walk-off victory that clinched a playoff spot for Moon in Section 3-5A. The Tigers’ win coupled with a Mars loss gave them the fourth and final playoff berth in the section. Moon swept Mars in the regular season. Troy Sallis added an RBI single for the Tigers (8-7, 5-5). J.T. Warren and Dominic Miller had a single and an RBI apiece for New Castle (1-15, 0-10).
Montour 8, Central Valley 3 – Jake Robinson struck out 15 over 5⅔ innings, singled twice and drove in two runs to lead Montour (13-3, 9-1) to a Section 1-4A win. Michael Ivanoff and Jonathan Cecil drove in two runs apiece. Cecil had three hits, including a double. Jacob Hunter went 2 for 3 with a double and a pair of RBIs for Central Valley (9-7, 7-3).
Mt. Lebanon 9, Baldwin 1 – Graham Keen went 2 for 3 with a home run and a pair of RBIs, Jake Tinnemeyer crushed a solo homer and David Shields went 3 for 3 with a triple, a double and knocked in two runs as Mt. Lebanon (15-3, 12-2) defeated Baldwin (1-16, 0-13) in Section 2-6A. Nolan Smith picked up a win for the Blue Devils.
New Brighton 12, Aliquippa 2 – Brock Budacki homered and drove in a pair of runs, Jaxson Zahn tripled and Dom Pasquale doubled to lead New Brighton (7-6, 5-6) to a Section 2-2A win. Luca Bible went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Aliquippa (0-10, 0-10).
North Allegheny 5, Pine-Richland 3 – North Allegheny (13-4, 9-2) scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the fourth on its way to victory, tying Pine-Richland (15-4, 9-2) in the Section 1-6A standings and forcing a winner-take-all matchup Thursday. Andrew Dixon, August Maslo, and Mason Smith produced two hits each for the Tigers. Sam Heckert doubled twice for the Rams.
Penn-Trafford 10, Gateway 1 – Brayden Stone went 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs, Jason Sabol and Chuck Fontana III each doubled and Brandon Roher struck out five in six innings as Penn-Trafford (14-1, 9-1) rolled to a Section 1-5A win. Dylan Vojnik hit a solo home run for Gateway (2-13, 1-8).
Plum 12, Franklin Regional 7 – Dan Macioce, Domanick Miller and Sean Franzi each drove in two runs to give winning pitcher Colin Watson plenty of run support as Plum (11-5, 8-2) beat Franklin Regional (9-7, 7-3) in Section 1-5A. Luke Williams and Blake Bertucci knocked in two runs apiece for the Panthers.
Ringgold 8, Albert Gallatin 6 – Eddie Frizzell hit the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth and Spencer Behrendt singled, doubled and plated a pair to lead Ringgold (7-8, 5-5) to a Section 2-4A win. Cyrus Potkul went 3 for 4 with a double for Albert Gallatin (3-14, 3-7).
Seneca Valley 4, Butler 2 – Nick Parrotto singled and scored, Aedan Fowler drove in a run and winning pitcher Ryan Rebholz threw three scoreless innings of relief to lead Seneca Valley (9-7-1, 6-5) to a Section 1-6A win. Boden Lenyk singled and doubled for Butler (6-10, 4-7).
Seton LaSalle 12, South Side 0 – Connor Rothhaar went 2 for 4 with a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs while Nate Baxendell went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs as Seton LaSalle (12-1, 11-0) shut out South Side (6-6, 5-6) in Section 2-2A. Gio LoNero struck out three in a win for the Rebels.
Shady Side Academy 9, East Allegheny 7 – Soren Cooper doubled, homered and drove in two runs and Matt Long had a double, triple and two RBIs to lead Shady Side Academy (8-5, 7-3) to a Section 3-3A win. Cody Tverdovsky singled and doubled for East Allegheny (8-5, 5-5).
Shaler 13, Mars 11 – Alex Venezia clubbed three doubles and drove in two runs while Troy Leas and Elijah Muckle each doubled and knocked in a pair of runs as Shaler (11-4, 5-4) outslugged Mars (7-6, 5-5) in Section 3-5A. Austin Kuremsky went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Fightin’ Planets.
South Allegheny 9, Keystone Oaks 2 – Ryan Cortes went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs and winning pitcher Josh Jackowski finished 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs as South Allegheny (14-3, 9-1) clinched the Section 2-3A title outright. Shane Falcone slapped a two-run double for Keystone Oaks (4-9, 4-6).
South Fayette 7, Upper St. Clair 5 – Gino Satira doubled and drove in three runs while Anthony Diodata and Brayden Harris each singled and knocked in a run to lead South Fayette (7-5, 6-4) to a Section 2-5A win. Aidan Crochier had a pair of RBIs for Upper St. Clair (6-10, 3-6). Trey Skeen got the win for the Lions.
Southmoreland 2, Charleroi 0 – Ty Keffer struck out seven in five shutout innings and Joseph Bentz fanned two in two innings of relief as Southmoreland (3-10) bested Charleroi (9-5) in a nonsection matchup. Brock Henderson went 3 for 3 for the Cougars. Keffer singled and drove in a run for the Scotties.
Thomas Jefferson 16, Woodland Hills 0 – Noah Kaszer singled, tripled and drove in three runs, Alec Warden had a single, double and three RBIs, and Luke Kosko doubled twice as Thomas Jefferson (15-2, 9-1) blanked Woodland Hills (0-13, 0-10) to claim a share of the Section 3-4A title.
Union 17, St. Joseph 0 – Landon Eckert singled, doubled, tripled and drove in three runs and Jalen Peace threw a three-inning one-hitter with six strikeouts to lead Union (11-2, 10-0) to a Section 3-A win. Owen Swanson had a hit for St. Joseph (2-10, 2-8).
Uniontown 8, Laurel Highlands 0 – Auston Grego struck out 13 and gave up four hits in a complete-game shutout as Uniontown (6-7, 5-5) beat Laurel Highlands (1-13, 0-10) in Section 2-4A. Wyatt Nehls homered twice and drove in three runs and Hunter Smiley clubbed a solo homer for the Red Raiders. Connor D’Amico and Shane Layton each doubled for the Mustangs.
West Allegheny 4, North Hills 3 – Brock Cornell had a pair of hits and RBIs to help West Allegheny (11-3, 7-3) clinch a share of the Section 3-5A title in a win over North Hills (9-4-1, 7-3). Brady Miller and Brody Malatak doubled for West Allegheny. Tristan Weimann and Sam Hanc had a double apiece for North Hills.
Western Beaver 10, Springdale 4 – Winning pitcher Vinny Ross fanned 11 and had two hits and a pair of RBIs for Western Beaver (7-5, 7-3) in a Section 2-A win. August Lichter drove in three runs. John Hughes went 4 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBIs for Springdale (4-6, 4-5).
West Greene 5, Carmichaels 4 – Morgan Kiger belted a three-run homer in the top of the fourth for West Greene (10-4, 7-3) in a Section 1-A victory. Johnny Lampe went 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Pioneers. Robbie Wilson-Jones finished 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI for Carmichaels (9-4, 6-4).
West Mifflin 9, Chartiers Valley 3 – Caden Wills drove in three runs to back winning pitcher Jake Martina as West Mifflin (15-2, 9-1) clinched a share of the Section 3-4A title. Nate Magilson doubled and drove in a pair for Chartiers Valley (8-5, 6-4).
Softball
Hampton 4, Moon 1 – Charlotte Lomb clubbed a two-run home run, Marissa Snyder drove in a run and Mackenzie Reese finished with a pair of triples as Hampton (12-1) beat Moon (2-12) in a nonsection contest. Macy Trost doubled for the Tigers. Cassie Vidic got the win for the Talbots.
Highlands 15, Woodland Hills 0; Highlands 15, Woodland Hills 1 – Highlands (3-10, 3-7) took both games of a doubleheader against Woodland Hills (0-11, 0-10) in Section 1-4A. In Game 1, Alexis Arms struck out six in a three-inning no-hitter and Madison Gorney and Gabby Chambers each knocked in two for the Golden Rams. In Game 2, Lexi Bender and Sophie Lentz each doubled and drove in two runs for the Golden Rams. Morelle Rauenzahn singled for the Wolverines’ only hit.
Latrobe 7, Kiski Area 4 – Winning pitcher Kayla Williams racked up 22 strikeouts and went 3 for 5 with a double as Latrobe (7-8, 6-4) defeated Kiski Area (2-11. 2-7) in nine innings in Section 2-5A. Maddie Munchinski drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the ninth and Madi Balko added an insurance run on a single. Hannah Hill was 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs for the Cavaliers.
McGuffey 1, Waynesburg 0 – Julia Barr drove in the game’s only run in the top of the first and it was all McGuffey (9-3, 6-2) needed in a Section 4-3A win against Waynesburg (6-10, 4-6). Winning pitcher McKenna Crothers allowed four hits and struck out nine in a complete-game shutout for the Highlanders. Gina Tedrow gave up one run on one hit and fanned 11 for the Raiders.
Mohawk 10, Hopewell 0 – Winning pitcher Reagn Magno struck out six in five innings while Gianna Pezzuolo doubled twice and had two RBIs as Mohawk (13-2, 9-0) blanked Hopewell (6-10, 3-7) in Section 2-3A. Kara Barkovich went 2 for 3 for the Vikings.
Neshannock 1, Harbor Creek 0 – Winning pitcher Addy Frye allowed just three hits and struck out 17 while driving in the only run for Neshannock (15-0) in a nonsection shutout win. Addison Lucas struck out nine in a losing effort for Harbor Creek.
North Catholic 12, Ambridge 7; North Catholic 17, Ambridge 2 – North Catholic (7-6, 4-6) swept a doubleheader with Ambridge (1-11, 1-8) in Section 3-4A. In Game 1, Kennedy Brown and Liliana Koller each hit a solo home run and Caroline Craska hit three doubles and drove in two runs for the Trojans. Gianna Georgakis doubled, homered and drove in three runs for the Bridgers. In Game 2, Anna Zahorchak went 4 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs and Juliana Lehman tripled and knocked in three while Lily Rhodes and Sophia Vacek each brought home two for the Trojans. Georgakis doubled and drove in a run for the Bridgers.
North Hills 6, Penn-Trafford 3 – Kaylee Bischoff went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, Natalie Anzaldi doubled twice and knocked in a pair of runs, and Abigail Sutton picked up a win as North Hills (12-2) doubled up Penn-Trafford (10-5) in nonsection play. Cameron Ponko hit a two-run home run and Erin Drotos belted a solo homer for the Warriors.
OLSH 13, Washington 0 – Julia Pinter went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs and winning pitcher Lilli Wamsley drove in three runs and struck out seven in four innings as OLSH (10-3, 8–1) blanked Washington (1-7, 1-6) in Section 3-2A. MacKenzie Patterson went 2 for 2 for the Prexies. Leann Walzer doubled and drove in two for the Chargers.
Riverside 12, New Brighton 1 – Jocilene Cummings struck out 11 and drove in three runs with a double to lead Riverside (6-7, 6-5) to a Section 1-2A win. Camryn Friello also knocked in three runs with a double and Gracelyn Maltarski doubled twice and brought home two for the Panthers. Riley Rose singled in a run for New Brighton (3-11, 2-9).
Seneca Valley 10, Canon-McMillan 6 – Winning pitcher Lexie Hames struck out 12 in five innings and went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs to lead Seneca Valley (16-0, 13-0) to a Section 1-6A win. Neve Miller homered, doubled and knocked in three runs while Blela Gross finished with three RBIs for the Raiders. Kiersten Williams hit a solo home run for Canon-McMillan (5-8, 5-8).
South Side 15, Cornell 0; South Side 17, Cornell 0 – In Section 1-A, South Side (10-4, 9-2) swept a doubleheader against Cornell (2-9, 2-8). In Game 1, Kenidi Cook went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs and Halina Matijevich and Maya Ringhoff each drove in two runs for the Rams. McKenna Griffith struck out eight in the loss for the Raiders. In Game 2, Halina Matijevich went 3 for 3 with a home run, a pair of doubles and five RBIs and Alison DeLong homered and drove in three for the Rams. Winning pitcher Kenidi Cook gave up two hits and struck out five in four innings.
West Greene 17, St. Joseph 2 – Payton Gilbert doubled twice and brought home three runs while Madelyn Roberts, Ella Scott and Ali Goodwin each doubled and drove in a pair of runs as West Greene (8-6) trounced St. Joseph (1-9) in nonsection play. Violet Hill crushed a two-run homer and Kalyda O’Connor doubled for the Spartans. Samantha Zimmerman got the win for the Pioneers.
Boys lacrosse
Indiana 16, Plum 2 – Garrett Goodrich scored five goals to pace Indiana in a Section 2-2A win over Plum. Ash Lockard and Parker Bowersox added a hat trick each for the Indians.
Girls lacrosse
Hempfield 5, Latrobe 4 – Emily Long scored twice to lead Hempfield past Latrobe in a nonsection victory. Lina Reese, Devan Bordonaro and Gina Panigall contributed a goal each for the Spartans.
Pine-Richland 19, Fox Chapel 10 – Madeline Mill and Taylor Wilkinson scored five goals each for Pine-Richland in a Section 2-3A win. Cate Gentille added four goals for the Rams.
Boys volleyball
Canon-McMillan 3, Peters Township 1 – Luke Bockius had 16 kills and Justin Peters added 15 to lead Canon-McMillan (10-2, 7-0) to a Section 1-3A win. Ben Kopec collected 10 kills and 10 digs and William O’Bryan had 19 assists.
Derry 3, Latrobe 0 – Cam McNichol and Mason Beeman each had 11 kills to lead Derry to a Section 2-2A win. Noah Berkhimer added seven kills, 16 assists and two blocks and Johnathan Shumaker recorded seven digs for the Trojans.
Norwin 3, Plum 1 – Jackson Genicola had 19 kills, Troy Horvath had 30 assists and Lucas Churchfield added 29 digs as Norwin (12-1, 7-0) beat Plum (2-8, 1-6) in Section 3-3A.
Penn-Trafford 3, Central Catholic 0 – Brad Heinbugh had 16 kills, Drew Sherwin had 10 digs, and Erza Glenn had three blocks to lead Penn-Trafford (11-2, 7-1) to a Section 3-3A win over Central Catholic (8-5, 4-3).
Shaler 3, Fox Chapel 0 – Dante Palombo had 11 kills, Logan Peterson followed with 10, Zach Rosenwald handed out 34 assists and Cameron Miller had 11 digs for Shaler in a Section 2-3A win.
