High school roundup for Feb. 17, 2024: Maggie Spell scores 1,000th point in Shady Side Academy playoff win

Maggie Spell scored 23 points, hitting the 1,000-point mark for her career, to help No. 2 Shady Side Academy to a 53-42 victory over No. 15 Mohawk in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round girls basketball playoff game Saturday.
Karis Thomas added 14 points for the Bulldogs (21-2). Erynne Capalbo led the Warriors (13-10) with 18 points and Aricka Young scored 11. Shady Side Academy will face OLSH in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
Avonworth 64, Apollo-Ridge 13 – Rebecca Goetz hit four 3-pointers on the way to scoring 21 points to lead top-seeded Avonworth (20-1) to a WPIAL Class 3A first-round win over No. 16 Apollo-Ridge (8-14). Avonworth will play Keystone Oaks in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
Beaver Falls 68, McGuffey 38 – No. 3 Beaver Falls (15-6) took care of No. 14 McGuffey (14-8) in the Class 3A first round to set up a quarterfinal matchup with No. 5 Waynesburg on Wednesday.
Neshannock 63, Brownsville 36 – In the WPIAL Class 3A first round, Kaitlyn Fries had 17 points and Payton Newman contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds as No. 4 Neshannock (16-7) overcame a slow start to dominate the second half in its win against No. 13 Brownsville (12-10). Neshannock led by six at halftime after falling behind 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. Skyler Gates and Zhariah Reed scored 12 points each for Brownsville. Neshannock plays South Park in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
OLSH 46, Ellwood City 41 – Morgan O’Brien scored 14 points, including five in the final minute, to lead No. 7 OLSH (16-7) over No. 10 Ellwood City (15-8) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs at Avonworth. Claudia Ierullo added 12 points for OLSH, which advances to meet Shady Side Academy in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Kayla Jones led Ellwood City with a game-high 16 points while Delaney Sturgeon chipped in 11 points.
Seton LaSalle 57, Waynesburg 36 – Addie Lonergan scored 27 points and hit six 3-pointers as No. 11 Seton LaSalle (14-8) upset No. 6 Waynesburg (20-3) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs. Mallory Daly and Tiara Curry scored 14 points each for Seton La Salle while Waynesburg was paced by Kaley Rohanna’s 13 points. Waynesburg led 25-21 at halftime before the Rebels held the Raiders to just 11 second-half points. Seton LaSalle will face OLSH in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
Beaver County Christian 44, Redeemer Lutheran 33 – Audrey Michalik scored 16 points, Keira Radu added 15 and Brylee Mozley finished with 12 to lead Beaver County Christian in the Southwestern Pennsylvania Athletic Alliance championship game. Jada Craig led Redeemer Lutheran with 10 points.
Boys basketball
Beaver County Christian 49, Propel Andrew Street 45 – Rocco DeSarbo scored 16 points and Hunter Mozely and Tyler Guevara added 10 each as Beaver County Christian won the Southwestern Pennsylvania Athletic Alliance championship game. Ahmir Calhoun scored 15 points and Darryl McCullough added 12 for Propel Andrew Street.
Track and field
TSTCA Championshps – WPIAL athletes won all but three events and Butler won the boys team title and North Allegheny took the girls team championship at Edinboro.
Landon Lacey won the 400-meter title and Butler took two relay events.
South Fayette had two champions in Tim Danzinger (800) and Michael Gimigliano (60 hurdles)
New Castle’s Kaevon Gardner (60), Canon-McMillan’s Colton Dean (200), North Allegheny’s James Behrend (3,000) and Elizabeth Forward’s Patrick Burgos (Mile) won individual titles on the track.
Winchester Thurston took a pair of relays.
Field events were won by Mars’ Adam Rohrbaugh (high jump), Canon-McMillan’s Colton Dean (long jump), Mt. Lebanon’s Luke Cramer (triple jump) and Hempfield’s Peyton Murray (shot put)
In the girls event, victories by Mackenzie Winning (400), Robin Kucler (3,000) and Wren Kucler (mile) helped North Allegheny secure the win. The Tigers also took the 1,600 relay.
South Fayette’s Olivia Rank swept the 60 and 100 meter dashes.
Mt. Lebanon took the 800 and 400 distance medley relays.
Canon-McMillan’s Rose Kuchera took the 60 hurdles.
Fox Chapel’s Anna Troutman (high jump), Shenango’s Sara Roe (long jump), Canon-McMillan’s Maggie Clair (shot put) and Hempfield’s Grace Iwig (pole vault) won field events.
