High school roundup for Feb. 5: Fox Chapel girls upset no. 5 Latrobe

Megan Friday hit two free throws with 2.2 seconds left in double overtime to lift Fox Chapel to a 60-58 upset victory over host Latrobe in a Section 2-6A girls basketball game Monday night.

Claudia Guerrieri had 19 points for the last-place Foxes (7-12, 2-8).

Laura Graytok had 20 points for No. 5-ranked Latrobe (15-5, 6-3), which is in second place in the section standings behind Norwin (10-8, 7-2).

North Allegheny 66, North Hills 27 — Piper Morningstar had 17 points and Rachel Martindale added 15 for No. 1 North Allegheny (20-0, 10-0), which hit 11 3-pointers in a Section 1-6A win.

Shaler 61, Pine-Richland 49 — Meghan Lacey had 16 points for Shaler (9-11, 4-6) in a Section 1-6A victory that clinched a playoff berth for the Titans. Taylor Brenner and Kayla Graf each had 14 points for Pine-Richland (7-12, 4-6).

Bethel Park 64, Baldwin 52 — Olivia Westphal scored 15 points and Ashley Spence had 14 as No. 3 Bethel Park (14-5, 8-2) won a Section 3-6A game.

Abbey Larkin had 27 points for Baldwin (3-16, 0-10).

Mt. Lebanon 44, Upper St. Clair 35 — Sparked by a 12-4 start, Mt. Lebanon (10-10, 6-4) earned a Section 3-6A win. Alyssa Hyland had 17 points for the Blue Devils.

Chartiers Valley 57, South Fayette 40 — Megan McConnell had 18 points and Mackenzie Wagner added 15 as Chartiers Valley (14-6, 8-2) won a Section 1-5A game and clinched second place in the section. Sam Kosmacki had 13 points for South Fayette (12-6, 7-3).

West Allegheny 70, Lincoln Park 28 — Hannah Lindemuth scored 18 points for West Allegheny (16-5, 9-1) in a Section 1-5A win.

Oakland Catholic 81, Woodland Hills 50 — Jayde Boyd had 21 points and Cierra Christian added 14 as Oakland Catholic (13-7, 7-3) won in Section 2-5A.

Mars 68, Franklin Regional 45 — Lauren Wasylson had 30 points and Tai Johnson added 23 as No. 1 Mars (16-4, 10-1) won in Section 4-5A. Jordan Yaniga had 16 points to lead Franklin Regional (8-12, 3-8), which is still alive for a playoff berth.

Greensburg Salem 61, Albert Gallatin 50 — Megan Kallock tallied 32 points to lead Greensburg Salem to a Section 3-5A win. Kallock was 20 for 26 from the free-throw line for the Golden Lions (7-13, 4-8), who led 22-11 at halftime.

Nikki Mellinger added 16 points for Greensburg Salem, which has been eliminated from the playoffs.

Abby King had 34 points for Albert Gallatin (7-13, 2-9).

Ringgold 49, Uniontown 30 — Taylor Mendicino had 10 points for Ringgold (16-5, 10-1) in a Section 3-5A victory.

Knoch 52, Highlands 36 — The Knights took a 33-12 lead into halftime to put the game away early in Section 1-4A play. Sara Sawhook led Highlands (2-15, 2-9) with 12 points. Knoch (10-10, 8-3) was led by Emily Fraser's 16 points.

Beaver 47, Quaker Valley 43 — Sydney Barney had 31 points as Beaver (15-5, 9-2) won in Section 2-4A.

Elizabeth Forward 65, Derry 45 — Elizabeth Forward improved to 13-6 overall and 9-4 in Section 3-4A with a victory over Derry (1-18, 1-12).

Keystone Oaks 72, Belle Vernon 49 — Gillian Piccolino had 17 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career as No. 3 Keystone Oaks (17-3, 13-0) won in Section 3-4A. Jaylen Hoffmann added 16 points for KO. Kelsey Green scored 14 to pace Belle Vernon (16-5, 11-2).

Mt. Pleasant 50, Yough 11 — Josie Benteler had 12 points to guide Mt. Pleasant (6-13, 4-9) to a Section 3-4A win over host Yough (0-20, 0-13).

South Park 52, Southmoreland 40 — Cassidy Zanider had 17 points and Kasey Kastroll added 15 as South Park (12-9, 9-4) won in Section 3-4A. Maggie Moore had 12 points and Charity Henderson had 10 for Southmoreland (12-9, 5-8).

East Allegheny 64, McGuffey 11 — Amani Johnson's 28 points led the way for No. 2 East Allegheny (20-0, 11-0) in a Section 2-3A win.

Avonworth 40, Shady Side Academy 37 — Hayden Robinson scored 14 points as Avonworth (14-7, 7-4) won in Section 3-3A.

Bishop Canevin 57, Apollo-Ridge 40 — Bri Allen scored 16 points, leading four players in double figures, as No. 1 Bishop Canevin scored 34 second-half points to put away Apollo-Ridge in Section 3-3A. Megan Ost scored 26 points to lead Apollo-Ridge (10-9, 6-6).

Steel Valley 48, Carlynton 45 — In Section 3-3A, Morgan Sarrah had 28 points to guide Steel Valley (6-14, 4-7) to a win.

Chartiers-Houston 64, New Brighton 18 — Alexa Williamson had 33 points to guide No. 3 Chartiers-Houston (15-5, 12-1) to a Section 1-2A win.

Ellis School 52, Sto-Rox 42 — Katharine Ference had 22 points and Natalie Jasper added 21 as Ellis School (4-16, 3-10) won in Section 2-2A.

Leechburg 64, Springdale 30 — Brittany Robilio scored 17 points and Mikayla Lovelace added 15 as the No. 4 Blue Devils rolled past Section 2-2A rival Springdale. MaKenzie Fello and Daesha Knight both chipped in 11 points for Leechburg (16-3, 11-2). Caitlyn Ullger led Springdale (1-17, 0-13) with nine points.

Riverview 47, Northgate 45 — Alyssa Cappa scored a team-high 14 points, and the Raiders held on for a road victory over Northgate in a crucial Section 2-2A game.

Sydney McDonough and Mackenzie Smail added 11 points apiece for Riverview, which moved into a fourth-place tie with Northgate (11-9, 6-7) with one game remaining. The Raiders (10-9, 6-7) can clinch a playoff berth with a home win Friday over rival Springdale.

Vincentian Academy 50, Brentwood 41 — Caroline Elliott had 17 points for No. 1 Vincentian (19-1, 13-0) in a Section 2-2A win.

California 64, Bentworth 43 — Bailey Vig scored 21 points for California (13-5, 10-3) in a Section 3-2A win. Grace Roberts added 18 points for the Trojans.

St. Joseph 64, Eden Christian Academy 41 — Alex Jones scored 22 points as St. Joseph defeated Eden Christian Academy (7-12, 4-6) in Section 3-A play. Chloe Kurpakus added 21 for St. Joseph (13-8, 7-3).

Winchester Thurston 58, Imani Christian 16 — Gia Thorpe had 34 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career as No. 1 Winchester Thurston (13-4, 10-0) won a Section 3-A game. Ayanna Townsend added 12 points in the win and also became the school's all-time leading scorer.

Wrestling

Seneca Valley 60, Carrick 11 — In the PIAA Class AAA preliminary round, Alejandro Herrera (106 pounds), Dylan Chappell (113), Antonio Amelio (132), Tyler Gross (170), Patrick Johnson (182) and Nick Funovits (220) all had pins to lead Seneca Valley to victory and a trip to the PIAA tournament in Hershey. McGuffey dropped a 54-16 decision to Harbor Creek in the PIAA Class AA preliminary round.

Hockey

Deer Lakes 7, Wheeling Park 2 — Ryan Murdock and Shane Miller each recorded a hat trick as Deer Lakes cruised to a Class A win over Wheeling Park (4-12). Michael Mlinarcik scored one goal and Christian Long made 24 saves to earn the win for Deer Lakes (8-9).

Fox Chapel 10, Greensburg Salem 1 — Chase Villani had four goals and an assist and Michael Kilmer added two goals as Fox Chapel (10-6) won in PIHL Class A. Cole McNair had a goal for Greensburg Salem (3-14).

Franklin Regional 4, Hempfield 3 — Mathieu Sliva's power-play goal at 10:12 of the third period lifted Franklin Regional past Hempfield in a Class AA South/East Division game. Oldrich Virag scored a pair of goals for Franklin Regional, which rallied from a 2-0 first-period deficit.

Penn-Trafford 5, Baldwin 3 — Gavin Patrick had two goals and two assists, and Benjamin Leslie added two goals as Penn-Trafford (9-8) on a PIHL Class AA game. Jack Hughes had a goal and three assists for the Warriors.

Plum 4, Seneca Valley 1 — Anthony Adamski had a goal and two assists as Plum upset Seneca Valley (11-3) in Class AAA play. Domenic Borriello, Nicholas McMaster and Alexi Mance scored one goal each for Plum (5-9). Sergio Benitez recorded 27 saves in the win.
