High school roundup for Jan. 30: No. 1 Canon-McMillan boys rally past Bethel Park in Section 2-6A

Canon-McMillan trailed Bethel Park by 15 points entering the fourth quarter but rallied for a 58-57 victory in a Section 2-6A boys basketball game Tuesday night.

Jason Fowlkes and Kenyon Lewis each had 11 points in the fourth quarter, when the Big Macs went on a 25-9 run. Fowlkes finished with 19 points and Lewis had 17 for Canon-McMillan (16-1, 8-1).

Alex Mullen scored 20 points to lead Bethel Park (10-7, 6-4).

Mt. Lebanon 89, Connellsville 34 — Antonio Garofoli scored 14 points to lead No. 4 Mt. Lebanon (16-3, 8-1) to a Section 2-6A win. The Blue Devils opened a 20-4 lead and hit 17 3-pointers.

Upper St. Clair 54, Baldwin 45 — Tanner Gensler scored 25 points to lead Upper St. Clair (10-9, 5-5) to a Section 2-6A win.

Butler 73, North Allegheny 55 — Ethan Morton had 35 points, including five 3-pointers, to lift No. 2 Butler (16-2, 8-2) to a Section 1-6A win. He also had 15 rebounds and six assists and six blocks.

Seneca Valley 41, Shaler 39 — Marcus Might scored with 9.9 seconds left to lead Seneca Valley (11-7, 4-5) to a Section 1-6A win. David Ritchie had 15 points, and Dalton Peffer had 13 points and 16 rebounds for Seneca Valley.

Latrobe 78, Hempfield 69 — Reed Fenton scored 26 points and Bryce Butler added 20 to lead visiting Latrobe to a victory over Hempfield (5-13, 2-9) in a Section 3-6A boys basketball game.

Latrobe (13-5, 8-3) rallied from deficits of 23-20 after the first quarter and 38-37 at halftime, outscoring the Spartans, 21-10, in the third quarter to take control. The Wildcats also got 14 points from Alex Bisignani and 11 from Marcus Dudzenski.

Reed Hipps paced Hempfield with 20 points. Braden Brose added 15 points and Shawn Wilson 10 for the Spartans, who trailed Latrobe 57-48 heading to the fourth quarter.

Fox Chapel 62, Norwin 52 — Carson Cohen had 21 points and Ben Kelly added 16, including three 3-pointers, as Fox Chapel (14-4, 8-3) won a Section 3-6A game.

Josh Ratesic had 13 points and Jake Williams added 12 for Norwin (9-9, 4-7), which has lost three straight games.

Penn Hills 68, Penn-Trafford 57 — Daivon Stephens scored 23 points to lead No. 5 Penn Hills (17-2, 9-2) to a win in Section 3-6A.

Sean Kelly scored 18 points and Kevin Stinelli added 14 for Penn-Trafford (6-13, 3-8), which was outscored 34-25 in the second half.

Woodland Hills 80, Plum 45 — Lamar Whiting had 18 points for Plum (6-12, 1-10) in a Section 3-6A loss. Amante Britt led four players from Woodland Hills (15-3, 9-2) in double figures with 23 points.

McKeesport 84, West Mifflin 58 — Jordan Grayson had 27 points, including a school-record eight 3-pointers, as No. 2 McKeesport (10-6, 8-1) won in Section 1-5A.

Mars 95, Montour 67 — Robby Carmody scored 42 points to lead No. 1 Mars (15-3, 9-0) to a Section 2-5A victory.

Gateway 55, Armstrong 33 — John Paul Kromka had 12 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks to lead Gateway (8-8, 5-3) to a Section 3-5A victory that clinched a WPIAL playoff berth.

Trennell Scott had 14 points, including four 3-pointers for the Gators.

Franklin Regional 51, Kiski Area 34 — Aidan Sadoski had 11 points and Hunter Stonecheck and Nate Leopold scored 10 apiece for Franklin Regional (13-4, 7-1) in a Section 3-5A victory.

Kiski Area led by three at the end of the first quarter, but was outscored 18-5 in the second. Austin Schwarz had 10 points for the Cavaliers (1-17, 0-8).

Highlands 68, Greensburg Salem 46 — Johnny Crise had 13 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, and Shawn Erceg had 15 points and 12 rebounds as No. 5 Highlands (13-4, 7-1) won in Section 3-5A.

Marvel McGowan scored 23 points for Greensburg Salem (10-7, 3-5).

Deer Lakes 57, Derry 40 — The Lancers (10-7, 6-3) took a two-game lead over Derry (7-8, 4-5) in the battle for the final playoff spot in Section 1-4A with a victory. Senior Jake Kelly scored 17 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Justin Huss scored 12 to lead a Trojans team missing three key players with the flu.

Freeport 80, Yough 38 — Ben Beale had 21 points to help Freeport (11-5, 6-3) cruise to a Section 1-4A win. Beale connected on five 3-pointers. Jarret Bach led Yough (2-16, 0-10) with 12 points.

Valley 75, Mt. Pleasant 59 — Nyjewel Carter recorded 27 points as Valley earned a Section 1-4A win. Dru Stokes added 15 points for Valley (10-3, 7-2). JJ Johnson had 20 points for Mt. Pleasant (3-16, 1-8).

Central Valley 53, Beaver 38 — Tyler Walker scored 16 points and Josh Kline had 15 as Central Valley (11-6, 7-4) won in Section 2-4A.

New Castle 57, Hopewell 41 — Marcus Hooker had 13 points to lift No. 3 New Castle (13-4, 8-3) to a win in Section 2-4A.

Quaker Valley 73, Beaver Falls 50 — Coletrane Washington scored 20 points, Ryan Stowers had 18 and Danny Conlan netted 16 to lead No. 1 Quaker Valley (15-0, 10-0) to a Section 2-4A victory.

Belle Vernon 67, Keystone Oaks 65 (3OT) — Logan Pfrogner hit the game-winning shot with three seconds left in triple overtime to lead Belle Vernon (14-4, 9-2) to a Section 3-4A win. Griffin LaCarte had 16 points for the Leopards, who outscored KO, 12-10, in the third overtime.

Josh Snell scored 25 points for Keystone Oaks (8-10, 5-6).

McGuffey 70, Waynesburg 68 — CJ Cole had 24 points, including five 3-pointers, as McGuffey (11-8, 4-7) won in Section 3-4A.

South Park 74, Elizabeth Forward 59 — Led by Devin Turner's 25 points, South Park (9-7, 7-4) earned a Section 3-4A win. Damon Smith added 18 points for the Eagles.

Gavin Martik had 22 points and Will Greijack added 19 for Elizabeth Forward (7-11, 3-8).

Lincoln Park 69, Aliquippa 57 — In Section 1-3A, Keeno Holmes had 26 points to guide No. 1 Lincoln Park (11-5, 8-0) past rival Aliquippa (13-6, 6-2). Elijah Ford had 12 points to lead the No. 4 Quips.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 61, Brentwood 31 — John Fukon had 21 points and Mike Dramble added 16 as Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (8-9, 5-3) won in Section 2-3A.

South Allegheny 61, Apollo-Ridge 43 — Apollo-Ridge (5-11, 1-6) was shut out 20-0 in the first quarter in a Section 3-3A loss. Jake Fello led the Vikings with 13 points, Klay Fitzroy scored 12 and older brother Kyle Fitzroy had 11 points. Juwan Mitchel had 18 points on six 3-pointers for the Gladiators (10-9, 3-5), and Derek Lockhart had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Steel Valley 56, Burrell 53 (OT) — Logan Bitar scored 25 points, but Burrell dropped a Section 3-3A contest to Steel Valley (9-8, 5-4) in overtime. Donovan Russell also scored 11 points for the Bucs (8-11, 5-3). Camden Polak led Steel Valley with 26 points.

Brownsville 60, Southmoreland 54 — Shandon Marshall had 18 points for Brownsville (6-10, 2-6) in a Section 4-3A victory. Ronnie Robinson scored 15 points, and Cade Richter had 13 for Southmoreland (4-14, 3-7), which led 42-40 after three quarters.

Serra Catholic 72, Summit Academy 42 — Jimmy Moon had 20 points to guide No. 4 Serra Catholic (15-2, 8-1) to a Section 1-2A win.

California 57, Carmichaels 33 — Cochise Ryan had 19 points for California (10-7, 5-5) in a Section 2-2A victory.

OLSH 88, Laurel 62 — Donovan Johnson scored 23 points as No. 1 OLSH (17-1, 11-0) captured a Section 3-2A win. Dante Spadafora had 17 points for the Chargers.

Sewickley Academy 69, Bishop Canevin 25 — Isiah Warfield scored 17 points, and Jett Roesing had 14 as No. 2 Sewickley Academy (14-3, 10-1) won a Section 3-2A game.

Holy Family Academy 80, Union 76 (OT) — Will Taylor scored 35 points to guide Holy Family Academy (10-6, 6-4) to a win in Section 1-A.

Monessen 98, Mapletown 22 — Lyndon Henderson scored 22 points as No. 2 Monessen (9-7, 7-0) won in Section 2-A.

Propel Andrew Street 60, Eden Christian Academy 57 — Dareius Davis had 19 points to guide Propel Andrew Street (10-5, 5-2) to a Section 3-A win. Tanner Gross scored 30 points for Eden Christian Academy (12-3, 6-2).

Winchester Thurston 69, St. Joseph 63 — Grant Bendis scored 33 points, including seven 3-pointers, but St. Joseph (5-13, 1-7) dropped a Section 3-A contest. Andrew Sullivan also scored 19 points for St. Joseph. Tyler Perry led Winchester Thurston (6-7, 3-4) with 16 points.

Allderdice 74, Carrick 57 — Bobby Clifford had 29 points as Allderdice (15-2, 7-0) rolled to a City League victory.

Cheswick Christian Academy 53, First Baptist Christian School 50 — Isiah Malloy set the pace with 24 points as Cheswick Christian Academy defeated First Baptist for a nonsection victory. Will Dryburgh also scored 12 points for Cheswick (1-8).

Girls basketball

Hempfield 50, Latrobe 45 — Allison Podkul scored 23 points and Hempfield (8-9, 4-3) connected on 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to beat No. 4 Latrobe (14-4, 6-2), avenging an earlier loss to Wildcats.

Latrobe entered the game leading Section 2-6A.

Sarah Liberatore added 15 points for Hempfield, which outscored Latrobe 12-7 during the final 2 ¹⁄₂ minutes.

Laura Graytok led Latrobe with 15 points. Mackenzie Markle added 13 for the Wildcats, who lost for just the second time in the past 10 games.

Norwin 65, Fox Chapel 30 — Olivia Gribble scored 22 points to lead Norwin (9-8, 7-2) to a Section 2-6A win. The Knights led 41-16 at halftime. Megan Friday had 14 points for Fox Chapel (5-12, 0-8).

Penn Hills 55, Penn-Trafford 35 — Adia Brisker scored 21 points as Penn Hills (10-7, 4-4) won a Section 2-6A game. Stephanie O'Donnell had 16 points and Bella Long added 12 for Penn-Trafford (7-11, 3-5). The Indians pulled ahead with a 20-5 run in the second quarter after P-T led 13-7.

Gateway 50, Greensburg Salem 21 — Lexi Jackson had 22 points to lead Gateway (16-3) to a nonsection win. Greensburg Salem (6-12) fell behind 20-2 to start the game.

Shady Side Academy 44, Freeport 35 — Madeline Clark scored 14 points, but Freeport (11-7) dropped a nonsection game. Arianna Goitz led Shady Side Academy (10-7) with 24 points and Catherine Jewart scored 15.

Cheswick Christian Academy 26, First Baptist Christian School 24 — Allyson Drake scored 12 points to lead Cheswick Christian Academy (9-2) to a nonconference victory.

Ligonier Valley 52, Saltsburg 46 — Alexia Boyd scored 26 points, and Lexie Petrof had 15 as Ligonier Valley (10-9, 5-6) won in the District 6 Heritage Conference.

Hockey

West Allegheny 8, Deer Lakes 2 — Ryan Murdock scored twice, but Deer Lakes (7-9) dropped a PIHL Class A game and stayed two behind Kiski Area for the 12th and final playoff spot. Jacob Gyergyo scored two goals for West Allegheny (15-3) and Nicholas Bandi had a goal and four assists.
