High school roundup for June 3, 2024: On a tough day for WPIAL champs, Avonworth prevails

Cooper Scharding allowed one run over six innings and Carson Franc had a double and a pair of RBIs to lead WPIAL champ Avonworth to a 6-1 victory over Martinsburg Central (16-8) in a PIAA Class 3A first-round baseball game Monday.

John Dolan and Alexander Rowe added two hits and an RBI each for the Antelopes (16-9), who advanced to play Fairview in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Avella 12, West Middlesex 9 – Bryce Wright hit a tie-breaking bases-loaded triple in the sixth inning to lift Avella (13-6) to a Class A first-round win. Wright finished with three hits and five RBIs. Isaiah Bradick, Westley Burchianti and Brayden Fuller also had three hits apiece for the Eagles, who will meet Eden Christian in the quarterfinals Thursday. Evan Gibson singled, doubled and drove in two runs for West Middlesex (10-12).

Bethel Park 11, Mechanicsburg 1 – Ethan Stanhoff singled, doubled and plated four runs for Bethel Park (16-7-1) in a win over Mechanicsburg (19-4-1) in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. Ryan Walsh pitched five innings of one-hit ball with eight strikeouts for the Black Hawks, who will face Monsignor Bonner in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Eden Christian 6, Conemaugh Township 3 – Caleb Emswiler doubled, homered and drove in two runs, Brett Feldman had two doubles, and Brady Hull had two hits and two RBIs for Eden Christian (17-6) in the Class A first round. Enzo Natale picked up the win and Noah Emswiler earned the save for Eden Christian, which will meet Avella in the quarterfinals Thursday. Colin Dinyar homered for Conemaugh Township (20-5).

East Pennsboro 11, Thomas Jefferson 4 – Isaac Gilbert singled, tripled and drove in three runs and Jovi DeJesus had two hits and two RBIs for East Pennsboro (20-2) in a Class 4A first-round win. Elias Lippincott had three hits and Noah Kaszer and Luke Kosko each collected two hits and an RBI for Thomas Jefferson (19-5).

Fleetwood 3, North Catholic 2 – Nick Noll and Dalton Young hit RBI singles in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and help Fleetwood (14-8) top WPIAL champ North Catholic (17-5) in the PIAA Class 4A first round. Blake Primrose had a double and an RBI and Ryan Shantz singled twice for the Trojans.

Indiana 3, Bellefonte 0 – Ben Ryan and Ryan Okopal combined on a three-hit shutout and Charlie Manzi homered as Indiana (14-10) knocked off the defending state champs in the PIAA Class 4A first round. Kadin Homer had two hits for Indiana, which will meet East Pennsboro in the quarterfinals Thursday. Trevor Johnson doubled for Bellefonte (18-3).

McDowell 1, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Nick Hamilton and Anthony Iacobucci combined on a three-hit shutout and Jake Hower hit a walk-off RBI single to lead McDowell (15-7) to a Class 6A first-round win. Graham Keen was the hard-luck losing pitcher for Mt. Lebanon (18-6), allowing one run on four hits in 6⅔ innings. McDowell will meet Landisville Hempfield in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Montour 5, Cathedral Prep 2 – Michael Ivanoff had three hits and two RBIs and Jonathan Cecil collected two hits and drove in a run as Montour (17-7) scored three times in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and beat Cathedral Prep (19-4) in the Class 4A first round. Maddox Tarquinio pitched 3⅔ innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out five for the Spartans, who will face Fleetwood in the quarterfinals Thursday.

North Star 5, Serra Catholic 2 – Brayden Livingston, Cayden Turner and Glendon Griffith contributed a pair of hits each as North Star (20-4) topped Serra Catholic (17-3) in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs. Collin Holmes hit a two-run double in the first inning for the Eagles.

Punxsutawney 3, Riverside 0 – Parker Stahlman pitched a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts and Punxsutawney (16-3) bounced defending state champ Riverside (16-3) in the first round of the PIAA Class 3A playoffs. It was a rematch of last season’s state semifinal. Zack Hare doubled for the Panthers but also took the loss, allowing three runs over two innings.

Redbank Valley 5, Burgettstown 4 – Jaxon Huffman had two hits and an RBI and Braylon Wagner doubled and scored a run as Redbank Valley (15-6) won a Class 2A first-round game. Owen Clouse scored twice and drove in a run for Redbank Valley, which will face North Star in the quarterfinals Thursday. Brodie Kuzior homered and Sam Elich doubled and drove in a run for Burgettstown (13-6-1).

Saegertown 8, Bishop Canevin 0 – William Shaffer threw a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts as District 10 runner-up Saegertown (19-2) ousted WPIAL champ Bishop Canevin (16-5) in the Class A first round. DeMarcus Manning singled, homered and drove in three runs and Wyatt Burchill singled and doubled for Saegertown, which will take on Bishop Carroll in the quarterfinals Thursday. Quentin White and Kellen Andruscik had hits for the Crusaders.

South Allegheny 10, Central Cambria 3 – Josh Jackowski and Trenton Popovich singled, doubled and drove in a run apiece to lead South Allegheny (20-5) to a Class 3A first-round win. Grady Snyder went 3 for 4 with a double and triple for Central Cambria (15-8). Caleb Jackowski also drove in two runs for the Gladiators, who will meet Punxsutawney in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Softball

Bentworth 4, Everett 1 – Kylie Glaze went 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs and Sofia Gaussa singled and doubled for Bentworth (18-4) in a Class 2A first-round win over Everett (20-3). Winning Pitcher Sydney Gonglik struck out 14 and allowed two hits for the Bearcats, who will face Laurel in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Carmichaels 2, Cambridge Springs 1 – Carys McConnell hit the go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning to lead Carmichaels (17-2) to a Class A first-round win over Cambridge Springs (23-1). Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak struck out 15 for the Mighty Mikes, who will face Claysburg-Kimmel in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Central Mountain 10, Penn-Trafford 0 – Adalynn McKeague threw a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts to lead Central Mountain in a Class 5A first-round game. Cora Myers, Caitlyn Watson and Madisyn Wian each singled and doubled and Taylor Doyle had three hits and two RBIs for Central Mountain (15-5), which will take on Armstrong in the quarterfinals Thursday. Cameron Ponko had a single and double for Penn-Trafford (15-7).

Chartiers-Houston 2, Berlin Brothersvalley 1 – Winning pitcher Meadow Ferri struck out nine and hit the go-ahead RBI single to lead Chartiers-Houston (19-2) to a Class A first-round win. Coral Prosser went 3 for 3 with a double for Berlin Brothersvalley (16-8). Taryne Drilak doubled for the Bucs, who will face West Branch in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Chartiers Valley 6, Cathedral Prep 1 – Marta Gualazzi had two singles and two runs scored and Lily Duffill doubled and drove in a run for Chartiers Valley (18-4) in a Class 4A first-round win. Emalie Thomas drove in a run for Cathedral Prep (16-7). The Colts will meet Elizabeth Forward in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Chestnut Ridge 5, South Park 1 – Brittany Motter struck out 12 and allowed four hits in seven innings for Chestnut Ridge (20-2) in a Class 3A first-round win. Ally Wilder singled for South Park (19-4). Chestnut Ridge will face Sharon in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Claysburg-Kimmel 6, West Greene 1 – Jenna Helsel went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Emalee Cavender homered to lead Claysburg-Kimmel (23-1) to a Class A first-round win. Payton Gilbert doubled for West Green (13-10). Claysburg-Kimmel will meet Carmichaels in Thursday’s quarterfinal.

DuBois Central Catholic 6, Union 1 – Kayley Risser and Lydia Morgan hit a double apiece for DuBois Central Catholic (20-2) in a Class A first-round win. Irelyn Fisher went 3 for 3 with a triple, home run and an RBI for Union (20-4). DuBois Central Catholic will meet Meyersdale in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Elizabeth Forward 1, Big Spring 0 – Julia Johnson hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth to lift Elizabeth Forward (21-1) to a Class 4A first-round win over Big Spring (17-7). Shelby Telegdy struck out 12 and allowed three hits in eight innings for the Warriors, who will face Chartiers Valley in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Harbor Creek 7, Mohawk 1 – Talon King singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Maggie Konieczki hit two singles and drove in two runs to lead Harbor Creek (19-5) to a Class 3A first-round win. Aricka Young and Alivia Hare had two hits apiece for Mohawk (19-6). Harbor Creek will face Forest Hills in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Laurel 4, Cranberry 1 – Mayci Lang went 2 for 3 with a double and RBI and Ivy Pancher drove in two runs to lead Laurel (20-5) to a Class 2A first-round win over Cranberry (15-4). Winning pitcher Autumn Boyd struck out 10 for the Spartans, who will face Bentworth in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Neshannock 10, West Shamokin 0 – Jaidon Nogay went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs and Gabby Perod hit two doubles to lead Neshannock (24-0) to a Class 2A first-round win over West Shamokin (19-4). Winning pitcher Addy Frye struck out 14 in six innings for the Lancers, who will meet Saegertown in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Seneca Valley 11, McDowell 0 – Anna Kalkowski went 3 for 4 with a triple and Lauren Folino hit a two-run double for Seneca Valley (22-1) in a Class 6A first-round win over McDowell (13-10). Winning pitcher Lexie Hames struck out 12 in five innings for the Raiders, who will face North Penn in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Sharon 1, Avonworth 0 – Mya Bundrant hit a RBI single in the sixth and Madelyn Vogan struck out 13 to lead Sharon (24-0) to a Class 3A first-round win. Mara Stetser went 3 for 3 for Avonworth (14-6). Sharon will meet Chestnut Ridge in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

St. Mary’s 2, Hampton 0 – Avery Eckles threw a five-hit shutout and Kelsie Fledderman and Molly Hanslovan each doubled for St. Mary’s (18-2) in a Class 4A first-round win. Charlotte Lomb and Mackenzie Reese hit a double apiece for Hampton (17-6). St. Mary’s will meet Archbishop Wood in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Thomas Jefferson 17, Solanco 4 – Zoe Krizan went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and four RBIs and Allie Chalovich singled, doubled and drove in five runs to lead Thomas Jefferson (13-8) to a Class 6A first-round win. Josie Janssen tripled for Solanco (19-6). Morgan Alisesky went 5 for 5 for the Jaguars, who will meet West Chester East in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Boys lacrosse

South Fayette 15, Cathedral Prep 4 – Owen Makar scored seven goals, Drew Welhorsky added three and Wade Scholar scored twice to lead South Fayette (20-2) past Cathedral Prep (8-9) in a Class 2A first-round game. The Lions will meet the winner of Tuesday’s game between District 3 Trinity and Hampton in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Girls lacrosse

Chartiers Valley 15, Conneaut 5 – The Colts (17-3) took care of District 10 champ Conneaut (10-6) to advance to the PIAA quarterfinals Saturday, where they will meet the winner of Tuesday’s game between Twin Valley and Penn-Trafford.
