High school roundup for June 8, 2024: South Fayette, Mars boys lacrosse advance to PIAA semis

Owen Makar completed a hat trick in the first quarter and finished with four goals to lead South Fayette boys lacrosse to a 10-9 victory over District 3 champion Trinity (21-1) on Saturday, giving the Lions their first trip to the PIAA Class 2A semifinals.

Bryce Watkins and Drew Welhorsky added three goals each for South Fayette, which jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter.

The Lions (21-2) will meet Mars (19-3) in the semifinals Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.

Mars, the three-time defending PIAA finalist, cruised to an 18-6 victory over District 12 champion Devon Prep (17-6) on Saturday.

The Lions and Fightin’ Planets have met in each of the last two WPIAL Class 2A championship games. Last month, Mars beat South Fayette, 16-5, to win its eighth straight district title.

Radnor 13, North Allegheny 4 – Three-time defending state champ Radnor (19-5) won its 14th consecutive PIAA playoff game, beating WPIAL runner-up North Allegheny (15-9) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. Evan Lyon and Nick Sichak each scored twice for the Tigers. Radnor will meet Garnet Valley, which defeated Mt. Lebanon, 17-8, in the semifinals Tuesday.

Girls lacrosse

Conestoga 18, Mt. Lebanon 7 – WPIAL Class 3A champion Mt. Lebanon (20-1) suffered its first loss of the season in the PIAA quarterfinals at Penn State. District 1 runner-up Conestoga (19-4) advanced to play Manheim Township (18-1) in the semifinals.

Villa Maria Academy 10, Mars 8 – WPIAL champion Mars (15-7) saw its season end with a PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals loss to District 1 runner-up Villa Maria Academy (18-6) at Penn State’s Panzer Stadium. Chartiers Valley (17-4) also dropped its PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal matchup, falling 15-3 to Twin Valley (18-5)..

Boys volleyball

Mars 3, West Shamokin 0 – WPIAL champion Mars (22-0) stayed undefeated with a sweep of District 6 champion West Shamokin (16-2) in the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinals, 25-23, 28-26, 25-19. The Fightin’ Planets will meet Meadville in the semifinals Tuesday.

Shaler 3, State College 1 – WPIAL champion Shaler (18-1) dropped the first set to District 6 champion State College (10-5) but rallied to win the next three for a 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 victory in the Class 3A quarterfinals.

Logan Peterson had 15 kills to lead Shaler. Dante Palombo added 13 kills and three blocks. Zac Wurzer had eight kills and 18 digs and Zach Rosenwald handed out 44 assists.

The Titans will face District 3 runner-up Warwick in the semifinals Tuesday.
