High school roundup for March 26, 2024: Penn-Trafford sweeps Bethel Park

Brad Heinbaugh had 10 kills and Keith Otto added eight kills and four aces to lead Penn-Trafford to a sweep of Bethel Park in nonsection boys volleyball Tuesday night. Game scores were 25-16, 26-24, 25-20. Owen Gisi had five kills and Nathaniel Rugh dished out 35 assists for the Warriors.

Baseball

Mt. Pleasant 9, River Valley 2 – Luke Nicotera doubled and drove in a pair of runs and Cole Chatfield, CJ Nestor and Dane Firmstone each had two hits to lead Mt. Pleasant (1-3) to a nonsection victory. Merreck Smith and Niko Vadala doubled for River Valley.

Softball

Southmoreland 1, Latrobe 0 – Maddie Brown threw a complete-game four-hit shutout, striking out seven, to lead Southmoreland to a nonsection victory over Latrobe. Riley Puckey reached on a dropped third strike and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to account for the game’s only run for the Scotties (4-0). Hard-luck losing pitcher Kayla Williams threw a complete game, allowing two hits and striking out 10 for the Wildcats (1-1).

Beaver 11, Westerville Central (OH) 2 – Bridget Mayo went 3 for 5 with a triple and an RBI and Abby Hojdila was 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI to lead Beaver (1-1) to a win in Myrtle Beach. Emily Davis went 3 for 3 for Westerville Central.

Carmichaels 5, Hollins (FL) 0 – Bailey Barnyak threw a two-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts to lead Carmichaels (3-0). Ali Jacobs singled and drove in a pair and Megan Voithofer had a single and an RBI for the Mighty Mikes.

Mt. Pleasant 11, Greensburg Salem 4 – Gianna Stanek homered and Emma Scanlon went 3 for 3 to lead Mt. Pleasant (2-2) to a nonsection win. Winning pitcher Dani Trainer struck out 14 and went 2 for 2 with a triple. Ally Jones had two hits and two RBIs and Madyson Hart tripled for the Vikings. Alle Scarpa singled and homered and Gionnah Ruffner singled and doubled for Greensburg Salem (1-3).

West Shamokin 15, Indiana 5 – Malena Stewart singled, doubled twice and drove in three runs and Maria Young went 3 for 3 with a double in a nonsection win for West Shamokin. Maggie Cunningham homered twice and Olivia Zimmerman singled and doubled for Indiana (2-2).

Girls lacrosse

Hampton 16, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 – Lindsay Fiscus and Lillian Ketler scored three goals each to lead Hampton to a Section 1-2A win.

Indiana 17, Latrobe 3 – Kate Lehman and Gianna Brody scored four goals apiece to lead Indiana to a Section 1-2A win. Aliza Yeager scored for Latrobe.

Moon 15, Seton LaSalle 5 – Seanna Rodriguez scored eight goals and Allyssa Anstis and Marleigh Therrien added two goals each to power Moon to a Section 2-2A win.

Penn-Trafford 18, Yough 5 – Sophia Green scored three goals and Ayla Moffa, Annabelle Aquino, Avery Bosack and Rylee Vovaris added two goals each to lead Penn-Trafford to a Section 1-2A victory.
