High school roundup for May 1, 2024: Belle Vernon walks off Latrobe to win section title

Adam LaCarte hit a walk-off RBI single and also recorded the final two outs of the top of the seventh to earn the win on the mound as Belle Vernon beat Latrobe, 6-5, to clinch the Section 2-4A baseball title Wednesday.

Connor Bergman had two hits and an RBI for the Leopards (13-3, 9-1). Louie Amatucci and Riley Smith each had two hits and an RBI for the Wildcats (13-3, 8-2), who walked three times with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to tie the score 5-5.

Connellsville 4, Peters Township 2 – Jonathan Kelly, Kace Shearer and Ethan Shultz each drove in a run while Ethan Porreca got the win as Connellsville (8-9, 5-5) bested Peters Township (7-10, 4-6) in Section 2-5A. Carter Shanafelt singled and drove in a run for the Indians.

Fox Chapel 7, Armstrong 4 – Kris Bandurski hit the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the fifth and Blake Krushinski doubled and drove in two runs as Fox Chapel (13-3, 8-2) defeated Armstrong (6-8, 3-8) in Section 1-5A. Logan Badac went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the River Hawks. Joe Geller doubled and knocked in a run for the Foxes.

Freeport 16, Highlands 11 – Ryan Claypool had three hits and four RBIs and Michael Hanz tripled twice and drove in a pair to lead Freeport (4-10) to a nonsection win. Trey Schreckengost doubled twice and drove in a run for the Yellowjackets. Boyd Brown and Luke Bombalski each had three hits and two RBIs for Highlands (2-15).

Hempfield 14, Norwin 3 – Gage Beeman hit two home runs and knocked in six runs and Dylan Firmstone was 3 for 5 with a home run and five RBIs to lead Hempfield (13-5, 9-5) to a Section 2-6A win over Norwin (9-8, 7-6). Caden Biondi was 3 for 3 with a double and Chase Sikorski got the win for the Spartans.

Hopewell 7, Quaker Valley 2 – Benjamin McDonald doubled and knocked in two runs and winning pitcher John Vescio struck out nine in seven innings to lead Hopewell (9-8) to a nonsection win. Noah Fardo clubbed a solo home run for Quaker Valley (4-11).

Kiski School 7, Penns Manor 2 — Winning pitcher Cy Zufall allowed one hit in six innings, striking out 12 to lead Kiski School.

Mt. Pleasant 6, Waynesburg 1 – Connor Drzal struck out 10 in seven innings while hitting a double and driving in three runs as Mt. Pleasant (11-4, 9-1) moved into first place in Section 4-3A. Grant Pack doubled for Waynesburg (11-2, 8-2). Dane Firmstone doubled and knocked in a pair of runs for the Vikings.

Riverview 17, Jeannette 0 – Rece Stempfer went 2 for 3 with a grand slam and five RBIs and Eli DeVita tripled and also drove in five runs as Riverview (12-3, 8-2) beat Jeannette (6-7, 4-6) in Section 3-2A. Lukas Duncan was 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Johnny Bertucci was the winning pitcher for the Raiders.

Seton LaSalle 13, South Side 2 – Josh Burkholder had two hits and four RBIs and Michael Todd collected two hits and drove in three runs to lead Seton LaSalle (13-1, 12-0) past South Side (6-7, 5-7) in Section 2-2A.

Sewickley Academy 19, Clairton 2 – Will Straka hit a pair of doubles and brought home five runs while William Pietragallo and Jacob Stanislaw each tripled, doubled and knocked in two runs as Sewickley Academy (4-9, 4-6) beat Clairton (3-9, 2-8) in Section 3-A. Winning pitcher Jordan Smith was 4 for 5 with a double and two RBIs for the Panthers.

Valley 9, Derry 6 – Winning pitcher Dom Dunkel drove in three runs, Nikolas Heakins and Wesley Schrock each tripled and knocked in a run, and Jacob Staraniec doubled and had an RBI for Valley (12-4, 7-3) in a Section 3-3A win over Derry (5-8, 4-6). Mason Fridley doubled and drove in a run for the Trojans.

Washington 6, Jefferson-Morgan 5 – Joseph Wilson went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI and winning pitcher Ayvari Chandler doubled and drove in a run for Washington (7-8) in a nonsection victory. Brayden Ellsworth went 3 for 3 with three RBIs for Jefferson-Morgan (6-7).

Allderdice 17, Oakland Catholic 7 – Winning pitcher Braelyn Altman tripled, hit a pair of doubles and knocked in five runs and Samantha Caruso went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs as Allderdice (7-0) beat Oakland Catholic (1-11) in nonsection play. Nina Hillard drove in three runs with a double for the Eagles. Gracie Whitt and Sierra Cruz each had two RBIs for the Dragons.

Belle Vernon 13, Uniontown 2 – Mailey Hayes went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, Gracie Sokol smashed a two-run homer, and Maddie Grisnik got the win as Belle Vernon (13-4, 8-4) beat Uniontown (8-4, 8-3) in Section 2-4A. Ava Livingood tripled and drove in a run for the Red Raiders.

Beth-Center 13, Washington 8 – Kyleigh McDaniel singled, tripled and drove in five runs, Chloe Bryne had three singles, a double and three RBIs, and Keira Lamp hit two doubles to lead Beth-Center (5-5, 4-5) to a Section 3-2A win. Simone Ivory singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Breonna Mitchell tripled for Washington (1-8, 1-7).

Bethel Park 12, West Mifflin 2 – Sia Spano went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and Becky Gillenberger singled and drove in two runs for Bethel Park (8-8) in a nonsection win. Samantha Tomko doubled and drove in two runs for West Mifflin (9-8).

Brentwood 21, Carlynton 11 – Gemma Stypula had two singles, a double and five RBIs, Mia March hit two triples and Emma Thompson doubled, tripled and drove in three runs to lead Brentwood (5-8) to a nonsection win. Lucy Vetter went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for Carlynton (7-8).

Carmichaels 7, Mapletown 0 – Bailey Barnyak struck out 14 and allowed one hit in seven innings for Carmichaels (11-2, 8-1) in a Section 2-A win over Mapletown (4-10, 4-8). Carys McConnell hit a triple, home run and had three RBIs and Megan Voithofer drove in two runs for the Mighty Mikes.

Charleroi 13, Fort Cherry 0 – Sofia Celaschi threw a five-inning no-hitter, struck out 13 and doubled and drove in three runs for Charleroi (10-4, 7-4) in a Section 3-2A win over Fort Cherry (0-12, 0-11). Riley Jones went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs and Lyla Brunner singled, doubled and drove in two runs.

Chartiers-Houston 11, Jefferson-Morgan 0 – Meadow Ferri threw a five-inning two-hit shutout and struck out 10 to lead Chartiers-Houston (13-1, 11-0) to a Section 2-A win over Jefferson-Morgan (6-7, 6-5). Taryne Drilak homered and Seanna Riggle singled and tripled for the Buccaneers.

Chartiers Valley 1, Hampton 0 – Taylor Walsh struck out 15 and allowed three hits in seven innings and Kaitlyn Truong tripled and drove in the lone run for Chartiers Valley (10-3, 8-2) in a Section 3-4A win. Charlotte Lomb singled and tripled for Hampton (12-2, 10-1).

Elizabeth Forward 10, Ringgold 0 – Shelby Telegdy threw a five-inning two-hit shutout and struck out 14 for Elizabeth Forward (14-1, 11-0) in a Section 2-4A win over Ringgold (2-11, 2-9). Julia Resnick singled, doubled and drove in two runs for the Warriors.

Fox Chapel 4, Mars 2 – In the top of the seventh, Ella Eisner hit an RBI double to tie the game and Catie Troutman slapped a two-run single to take the lead as Fox Chapel (6-8) edged out Mars (5-11) in nonsection play. Heidi Stiger doubled and Jillian Haigh got the win for the Foxes. Allie Walukiewicz singled and drove in a run for the Fightin’ Planets.

Frazier 12, Monessen 0 – Addison Hiles threw a five-inning no-hitter and Grace Vaughn went 3 for 3 with a double, triple and four RBIs to lead Frazier (10-0, 10-0) past Monessen (6-6, 6-5) in a Section 3-A win.

Gateway 18, Sto-Rox 0 – Becca Ryan struck out five in a three-inning no-hitter as Gateway (1-14) beat Sto-Rox (0-4) in nonsection play. Meghan Marsh went 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs and Ryan drove in three for the Gators.

Greensburg Salem 7, Laurel Highlands 5 – Tymara White went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Sammie Reusser singled, tripled and drove in a run to lead Greensburg Salem (6-10, 4-7) to a 2-4A win over Laurel Highlands (5-7, 5-6). Winning pitcher Alle Scarpa struck out 11.

Jeannette 10, Bishop Canevin 2 – Grace Stein struck out 14 and Abigail Shaw tripled for Jeannette (11-1, 10-1) in a Section 3-A win. Myra Gohring hit two doubles and drove in two runs for Bishop Canevin (4-10, 4-8).

Latrobe 14, Greensburg Central Catholic 5 – Madden Gresh went 3 for 3 with a double, two triples and three RBIs, Julianna Bulebosh singled, doubled and drove in three runs, and Kayla Williams had a single, double and two RBIs to lead Latrobe (8-8) to a nonsection win. Makenzee Kenney went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Greensburg Central Catholic (6-5).

Laurel 11, Riverside 5 Addie Deal went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and six RBIs and Riley Balcolm drove in two runs to lead Laurel (13-4, 10-2) to a Section 1-2A win. Addison Drake hit a home run for Riverside (6-8, 6-6).

Leechburg 16, Geibel 6 – Ava Ferretti went 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and six RBIs, Laney Aul went 2 for 4 with a home run and drove in two, and Ava Richards tripled and knocked in two runs for Leechburg (9-6) in a nonsection win over Geibel. Trinity Kimble got the win for the Blue Devils.

McGuffey 5, Seton LaSalle 2 – Julia Barr hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth to lift McGuffey (10-3, 7-2) past Seton LaSalle (4-8, 3-6) in Section 4-3A. Kayla Pulkowski drove in a run for the Rebels. McKenna Crothers tossed a complete game and struck out 12 for the Highlanders.

Montour 15, Blackhawk 3 – Delaney Barto hit a single, two doubles and four RBIs and Hailey Staub hit two home runs and drove in five runs to lead Montour (7-6, 7-5) to a Section 3-4A win. Raina Johnson went 2 for 2 with a double and a RBI for Blackhawk (6-6, 5-6).

Neshannock 19, New Brighton 0 – Abigail Measel threw a three-inning no-hitter and struck out nine for Neshannock (16-0, 12-0) in a Section 1-2A win over New Brighton (3-12, 2-10). Gabby Quinn went 3 for 3 with a home run and six RBIs and Gabby Perod and Miley Anderson each tripled for the Lancers.

North Allegheny 6, Norwin 5 – Anne Melle singled, doubled and drove in two runs and McKenna Rowlands doubled to lead North Allegheny (9-5, 9-5) to a Section 1-6A win. Josey Michalski and Addison Grimes each doubled for Norwin (7-9, 6-8).

North Catholic 12, Beaver 1 – Alanna McEnaney went 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs and winning pitcher Kennedy Brown doubled and drove in a run as North Catholic (8-6, 5-6) cruised to a Section 3-4A victory over Beaver (2-12, 1-9). Caroline Craska was 4 for 4 for the Trojans.

OLSH 15, Burgettstown 2 – Olivia DiGiacomo went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs while Morgan O’Brien and Camryn Hummel each knocked in two runs as OLSH (11-3, 9-1) rolled to a Section 3-2A win. Raya Sentipal belted a solo home run for Burgettstown (5-9, 4-6). Lilli Wamsley got the win for the Chargers.

Penn Hills 20, Woodland Hills 0 – Isabella DeCarlo and Lauren Sipple combined to throw a no-hitter and Shania Lewis tripled, homered and drove in four runs for Penn Hills (4-7) in a nonsection win over Woodland Hills (0-12).

Pine-Richland 17, Mt. Lebanon 7 – Calle Henne singled, homered and drove in four runs, Iliana Aggelou had two singles, a triple and three RBIs, and Jocelyn Langer hit two doubles and had two RBIs for Pine-Richland (9-7, 8-5) in a Section 1-6A win. Rebecca Davis, Gabby Boone and Emily Morgan homered for Mt. Lebanon (1-15, 1-13).

Shady Side Academy 19, Ellis School 3 – Mya Kearns went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and seven RBIs and Lexi Hogle hit a double, triple and drove in four runs to lead Shady Side Academy (1-8) to a nonsection win over Ellis School (0-9).

Shaler 2, Ligonier Valley 1 – Jayla Antomaci was walked in the bottom of the seventh, allowing the winning run to score for Shaler (12-2) in a nonsection win. Abby Springer went 3 for 3 with a double for Ligonier Valley (11-3).

South Allegheny 13, Keystone Oaks 2 – Morgan Mosqueda and Ava Martorelli each doubled, tripled and drove in two runs and Lily Dranko and Cameran Colecchi hit two singles and had two RBIs apiece to lead South Allegheny (6-9) to a nonsection win. Kylie Stahl singled, doubled and drove in two runs for Keystone Oaks (5-9).

South Park 3, Serra Catholic 0 – Sydney Sekely threw a one-hit shutout and struck out 11 to lead South Park (14-1) past Serra Catholic (10-2) in a nonsection win. Sydney Dubyak singled and drove in a run for the Eagles.

South Side 11, Northgate 1 – Karis Dunham homered, doubled and drove in four runs and winning pitcher Maya Ringhoff was a home run short of a cycle and had three RBIs as South Side (11-4, 10-2) defeated Northgate (5-7, 5-5) in Section 1-A.

Union 15, Burrell 5 – Mallory Gorgacz went 2 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, Irelyn Fisher doubled and knocked in four, and Mia Preuhs struck out 10 in a complete game as Union (16-1) rolled to a nonsection win. Pyper Ferres and Bella Stewart each homered and had two RBIs for Burrell (9-6). Addie Nogay and Olivia Williams each had three RBIs for the Scotties.

Upper St. Clair 6, Peters Township 3 – Lainie Guarino doubled and drove in two runs and Brooklyn Kemp struck out eight for Upper St. Clair (6-9, 4-6) in a Section 4-5A win. Emerson Gatten went 3 for 3 with two RBIs for Peters Township (4-12, 1-9).

West Allegheny 3, South Fayette 1 – Savanna Benish doubled and drove in two runs and Autumn Bielecki struck out nine to lead West Allegheny (15-2, 8-1) to a Section 3-5A win. Maddie Cavenaugh hit two doubles and Emma Smith tripled for South Fayette (10-3, 7-3).

West Shamokin 5, Derry 0 – Leah Mondi struck out 12 in a four-hit complete game to lead West Shamokin to a nonsection shutout. Malena Stewart went 2 for 3 with a home run and a pair of RBIs for the Wolves. Bailey Legge and Haylee Myers each doubled for Derry (3-12).

Western Beaver 11, New Castle 3 – Winning pitcher Emma Bogacki struck out 11 in a complete game for Western Beaver (5-6, 4-6) in a Section 3-5A win. Bogacki hit two home runs and drove in three, Abby Tomkowski hit a three-run homer and Shaylyn Shall smashed a solo home run for the Golden Gophers. Olivia Hood doubled and knocked in two for New Castle (4-9, 3-7).

Yough 11, Mt. Pleasant 7 – Adoria Waldier and Kylie Odelli went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs apiece to lead Yough (7-3, 6-3) to a Section 3-3A win. Gianna Stanek singled, doubled and drove in three runs for Mt. Pleasant (10-8, 4-6).

Girls lacrosse

Moon 15, Ambridge 0 – Marleigh Therrien, Reese Keslar and Gianna Deluca had a hat trick each to pace Moon in a Section 2-2A win over Ambridge.

South Fayette 18, Knoch 2 – Brooklyn Spruit scored her 100th career goal in South Fayette’s Section 2-2A victory.

Boys tennis

WPIAL team tournament – Franklin Regional defeated Peters Township, 3-2, in a closely contested matchup between eighth and ninth seeds in the Class 3A first round. Other winners advancing to Thursday’s quarterfinals were No. 5 Mt. Lebanon, No. 4 Fox Chapel, No. 3 Upper St. Clair, No. 6 Shady Side Academy, No. 7 Pine-Richland and No. 2 Gateway.
