High school roundup for May 2, 2024: Central Catholic sweeps Canon-McMillan, clinches playoff spot

CJ Proch doubled, homered and drove in five runs as Central Catholic defeated Canon-McMillan, 6-4, to clinch the fourth and final WPIAL playoff spot in Section 2-6A baseball Thursday.
Adam Sarkis added two hits and an RBI for the Vikings (10-9, 7-8). Sam Meredith went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and Ben Peterson homered for the Big Macs (7-10, 7-8).
The teams tied with 7-8 section records. Central Catholic received the playoff spot via the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Vikings swept the three-game series.
Allderdice 6, Leechburg 2 – Landon Blank singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Nadav Gil also had two hits for Allderdice (2-13) in a nonsection win. Jayden Floyd doubled for Leechburg (9-7).
Bentworth 16, Monessen 7 – Gavin Linton-Rush had a single, double, triple and three RBIs to lead Bentworth (4-11) to a nonsection win. John Scott had three hits, a double and three RBIs and Sam Wade also had three hits and a double for the Bearcats. RJ DiEugenio tripled, homered and drove in five runs for Monessen (0-15).
Central Valley 4, Keystone Oaks 2 – Daniel McIntosh had three hits, Jason Hunter doubled and drove in a run and Nathan Angelo had a triple and an RBI for Central Valley (10-7) in a nonsection win. Nathan Rohe went 3 for 3 with three doubles and Anthony Liebro doubled and drove in a pair for Keystone Oaks (4-10).
Connellsville 11, Albert Gallatin 3 – Grayden Gillott doubled and drove in two runs and Mason Swenglish also had two RBIs for Connellsville (9-9) in a nonsection win. Gino Valenti had three hits for Albert Gallatin (3-15).
East Allegheny 11, Steel Valley 4 – Cody Tverdovsky singled and doubled and Ryan Kirk had two hits and two RBIs for East Allegheny (9-4) in a nonsection win. Immanuel Owens doubled and drove in a run for Steel Valley (3-11).
Ellwood City 10, Riverview 0 – Jordan Keller had two doubles, a triple and six RBIs for Ellwood City (9-7) in a nonsection win over Riverview (11-4). Jacob Biskup had two singles and a double and Isiah Lutz singled and tripled for the Wolverines.
Elizabeth Forward 9, Yough 3 – Cy Herchelroath doubled twice and drove in three runs and Charlie Nigut went 2 for 2 with two doubles to power Elizabeth Forward (9-7) to a nonsection win. Landon O’Donnell went 3 for 4 with an RBI for Yough (6-10).
Franklin Regional 12, Uniontown 0 – Blake Bertucci went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs and NJ Ramchandran and James Templeton combined on a five-inning, two-hit shutout as Franklin Regional (10-7) beat Uniontown (6-8) in a nonsection game. Luke Williams homered, Cole Brinker doubled twice and Anthony Mitchell had a single, double and three RBIs for the Panthers.
Freedom 8, Western Beaver 4 – Mason O’Donnell and Zach Kuntz each had a single, a double and an RBI for Freedom (9-8) in a nonsection win. August Lichter singled and drove in a run for Western Beaver (7-6).
Freeport 9, Eden Christian 3 – Ryan Claypool went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs for Freeport (5-10) in a nonsection win. Brett Feldman singled and doubled for Eden Christian (12-4). Michael Hanz doubled and drove in a run and Kason Barker had a triple and an RBI for the Yellowjackets.
Greensburg Salem 14, Brownsville 0 – Braedon Leatherman threw a no-hitter and Greensburg Salem (6-7, 6-4) collected 14 hits in a Section 4-3A win over Brownsville (0-13, 0-12).
Kiski Area 8, Deer Lakes 1 – Jason Buczak singled, doubled and homered and winning pitcher Jake Smith struck out 10 to lead Kiski Area (11-7) to a nonsection win over Deer Lakes (5-9). Blake Fritz drove in a pair for the Cavaliers.
Mohawk 14, Blackhawk 4 – AJ Verdi went 4 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs to power Mohawk (16-1) to a nonsection win. JJ Nail singled and doubled and Vinny Pezzuolo drove in two runs for the Warriors. Connor Welsh doubled and knocked in two runs for Blackhawk (6-9).
Mt. Lebanon 6, Baldwin 0 – David Shields struck out 14 and didn’t allow a hit in 5⅔ innings to lead Mt. Lebanon (16-3, 13-2) to a Section 2-6A win. Shields tripled and drove in a run and Jake Tinnemeyer went 3 for 3 with a double, homer and two RBIs for the Blue Devils. Dylan Lacher had the lone hit for Baldwin (1-17, 0-14).
New Brighton 24, Beaver Falls 14 – Dom Pasquale singled, doubled and drove in four runs, Aiden Circle had two singles, a triple and three RBIs, and Brandon Ribar knocked in five runs to lead New Brighton (8-6) to a nonsection win. Tyson Davis had two hits and three RBIs for Beaver Falls (0-13).
Northgate 13, Aliquippa 0; Northgate 15, Aliquippa 5 – Northgate (2-13, 2-10) swept a Section 2-2A doubleheader from Aliquippa (0-11, 0-11). In the first game, Chris Crawford went 3 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs, Dwayne Reed had two singles, a triple and two RBIs, and Robert Persson also had three hits. In the second game, Crawford threw a five-inning one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs.
North Hills 4, Fox Chapel 2 – Jake Pollaro singled, doubled and drove in a run to lead North Hills (10-4-1) to a nonsection win. Jeremy Haigh homered for Fox Chapel (13-4).
OLSH 10, Fort Cherry 1 – Brandon Brazell and Gino Williams doubled and drove in two runs apiece for OLSH (13-4) in a nonsection win. Blake Sweder singled and had an RBI for Fort Cherry (10-3).
Penn-Trafford 10, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 – Ethan Septak homered and Robbie Andrews threw four shutout innings to lead Penn-Trafford (15-1) to a nonsection win over Greensburg Central Catholic (9-4). Chuck Fontana and Tyler Freas each had two hits and an RBI.
Seneca Valley 7, Butler 4 – Mike Delduca singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Luke Anderton also had a single and a double for Seneca Valley (10-7-1, 7-5) in a Section 1-6A win. Maverick Clement doubled, homered and drove in three for Butler (6-11, 4-8).
Shaler 17, Burrell 7 – Brady McGuire doubled, tripled and drove in three runs and Brady Alexander had three hits and three RBIs to power Shaler (13-4) to a nonsection win. Dylan McKallip had two hits and an RBI for Burrell (9-7).
Shenango 12, Grove City 8 – Treyton Ross went 3 for 3 with a double and Grayson Hooks hit a double, home run and drove in four runs to lead Shenango (8-8) to a nonsection win over Grove City.
South Park 6, Ringgold 0 – Cooper Hochendonor pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead South Park (8-5) to a nonsection win. Zach Ludwig singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Ryan Spitznagel also singled and doubled for the Eagles. Eddie Frizzell had two hits for Ringgold (7-9).
Springdale 16, Summit Academy 0 – Andrew Redman went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and Dominic Shearer struck out seven as Springdale (5-6, 5-5) defeated Summit Academy (0-10, 0-10) in three innings in Section 2-A. Luke Bramson, John Hughes and Joey Loebig each had two hits and two RBIs for the Dynamos.
Thomas Jefferson 5, Bethel Park 2 – Alec Warden had two hits and two RBIs and Jason Siemon allowed three hits in seven innings to lead Thomas Jefferson (16-2) to a nonsection win. Michael Bruckner homered and drove in two for Bethel Park (10-6-1).
Trinity 5, Waynesburg 4 – Cam Schofield hit a walk-off RBI single for Trinity (8-7) in a nonsection win. Trenton Zupper doubled and drove in two runs for Waynesburg (11-2). Matthew Robaugh hit two doubles and Kaden Hathaway doubled and drove in two runs for the Hillers.
Valley 5, Jeannette 3 – Nikolas Heakins had two hits and an RBI and Dom Dunkel, Alexander Vagnier, Conrad Hoover and Mason Simmons also drove in runs for Valley (13-4) in a nonsection win. Jayden Kennedy singled and doubled and Wyatt Schaeffer had two RBIs for Jeannette (6-8).
West Allegheny 10, Union 0 – Ben Kern threw a five-inning, one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and Brock Cornell homered to lead West Allegheny (12-3) to a nonsection win. Dennen Bowen had the lone hit for Union (11-3). Will Gubba singled, doubled and knocked in two for West A.

Albert Gallatin 4, Laurel Highlands 3 – Leah Myers hit a two-run walk-off double for Albert Gallatin (2-11, 2-10) in a Section 2-4A win. Aubrey Speelman went 3 for 3 with a double and two runs for Laurel Highlands (5-8, 5-7).
Armstrong 12, Indiana 5 – Madison Baker struck out 12 and Shelby Cloak had two singles, a double, a triple and three RBIs to lead Armstrong (14-1) to a nonsection win. Maggie Cunningham hit a home run for Indiana (12-3). Lily Gutherie singled, doubled and drove in three runs for the Riverhawks.
Avella 8, Carlynton 6 – Avery Rado and Sydney Strope doubled and drove in two runs apiece to lead Avella (5-12) to a nonsection win over Carlynton (7-9).
Avonworth 18, Valley 0 – Alivia Lantzy threw a three-inning no-hitter and struck out seven for Avonworth (11-3, 9-1) in a Section 1-3A win over Valley (1-14, 1-9). Alexandra Savatt tripled and plated a pair and Jayla Jones doubled and drove in a run for the Antelopes.
Blackhawk 8, Ambridge 1 – Peyton Kimberlin threw a four-inning, one-hit shutout and struck out nine to lead Blackhawk (7-6, 6-6) past Ambridge (1-12, 1-9) to a Section 3-4A win. Zoey Linder went 3 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs and Morgan Alexander drove in two runs for the Cougars.
Burgettstown 16, Bridgeport (OH) 5 – Layla Sherman went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs and Andi Midler doubled and tripled for Burgettstown (6-9) in a nonsection win over Bridgeport.
Canon-McMillan 7, Baldwin 3 – Olivia Ford and Sami Merkle doubled and drove in a run apiece for Canon-McMillan (6-8, 6-8) in a Section 1-6A win. Reese Temme doubled and drove in two runs for Baldwin (5-11, 4-10).
Carmichaels 7, Chartiers-Houston 5 – Ali Jacobs hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 15th inning to lead Carmichaels (12-2, 9-1) in the completion of a game that was suspended due to darkness after 13 innings April 24. Losing pitcher Meadow Ferri struck out 30 for Chartiers-Houston (13-2, 11-1). Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak fanned 19. Kaitlyn Waggett went 2 for 7 with a double and Carys McConnell tripled twice for the Mighty Mikes. Ella Richey singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Ferri had two doubles and an RBI for the Bucs.
Central Valley 10, Mohawk 0 – Emma Weaver threw a two-hit shutout and Aubrey Grater hit a single, triple and drove in five runs for Central Valley (10-2, 8-2) in a Section 2-3A win. Maya McGreal doubled for Mohawk (13-3, 9-1).
Charleroi 16, Washington 4 – Riley Jones, Sofia Celaschi and Madalynn Lancy each doubled for Charleroi (11-4, 8-4) in a Section 3-2A win. Zkyiah Hines hit a home run for Washington (1-9, 1-8).
Chartiers Valley 15, Beaver 3 – Taylor Walsh went 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Caitlin O’Farrell had a single, double and four RBIs and Delaney O’Connor hit two singles, a double and drove in three runs to lead Chartiers Valley (11-3, 9-2) to a Section 3-4A win. Abby Hojdila and Bridget Mayo each doubled for Beaver (2-13, 1-10).
Elizabeth Forward 13, Uniontown 0 – Julia Resnik hit a triple and home run, Berlyn Holibaugh doubled and drove in two runs and Carlee Soukup tripled for Elizabeth Forward (15-1, 12-0) in a Section 2-4A win over Uniontown (8-5, 8-4).
Freeport 8, Highlands 6 – Sydney Selker hit a double and home run and Lauren Clark homered to lead Freeport (9-6) to a nonsection win. Carrah Scardina and Makenzie George hit a single and double apiece for Highlands (3-11).
Greensburg Salem 4, Ringgold 0 – Alle Scarpa struck out nine and Mahayla Jones had two hits as Greensburg Salem (7-10, 5-7) clinched the fourth and final playoff spot out of Section 2-4A. The Golden Lions needed to beat Ringgold (2-12, 2-10) and have Albert Gallatin defeat Laurel Highlands (5-8, 5-7) to earn a playoff spot. Greensburg Salem won the head-to-head tiebreaker by sweeping Laurel Highlands this season.
Hampton 20, North Catholic 9 – Jessica Lange went 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs, Aliza Michielli singled, doubled and drove in five runs and Mackenzie Reese homered for Hampton (13-2, 11-1) in a Section 3-4A win. Samantha Foley went 3 for 3 with a triple, home run and four RBIs for North Catholic (8-7, 5-7).
Hempfield 10, Pine-Richland 0 – Maggie Howard went 3 for 3 with a double and Emily Griffith and Hannah Uhrenek hit a home run apiece to lead Hempfield (15-1, 13-1) to a Section 1-6A win over Pine-Richland (9-8, 8-6). Riley Miller threw a five-inning, two-hit shutout with five strikeouts.
Laurel 10, Knoch 0 – Autumn Boyd threw a six-inning, one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and drove in two runs and Addie Deal had a single, double and three RBIs for Laurel (14-4) in a nonsection win over Knoch (11-5).
Mars 16, Moon 13 – Abby Robinson had a triple, home run and five RBIs and Laura Craska hit two doubles and drove in four runs to lead Mars (6-11, 5-5) to a Section 3-5A win. Cami Chambers hit a home run for Moon (2-13, 2-8).
Montour 8, South Fayette 2 – Shania Cope had a single, double, home run and three RBIs and Jana Hess had two singles, a home run and four RBIs to lead Montour (8-6) to a nonsection win. Cam Valentino hit two singles for South Fayette (10-4).
Mt. Pleasant 3, Connellsville 2 – Dani Trainer hit two singles and a double for Mt. Pleasant (11-8) in a nonsection win. Kameron Kantorik hit two singles for Connellsville (11-6).
New Castle 14, Hopewell 10 – Olivia Hood had a single, double, home run and six RBIs and Angelina Jay hit three singles to lead New Castle (5-9) to a nonsection win. Ava Compton hit a two-run homer for Hopewell (6-11).
North Allegheny 7, Butler 0 – Sammy Plotsko went 4 for 4 with a double and triple and threw a complete-game six-hit shutout and McKenna Rowlands and Olivia Carson each doubled for North Allegheny (10-5, 10-5) in a Section 1-6A win. Shylee Karenbauer singled and doubled for Buler (3-11, 2-11).
North Hills 5, Penn Hills 0 – Abigail Sutton struck out eight and allowed two hits in seven innings to lead North Hills (13-2, 9-1) to a Section 1-5A win over Penn Hills (4-8, 1-8). Natalie Anzaldi hit two singles and double and Savannah Bodnar tripled for North Hills.
OLSH 14, Beth-Center 1 – Morgan O’Brien went 2 for 2 with a triple and five RBIs and Julia Pinter homered for OLSH (12-3, 10-1) in a Section 3-2A win. Sonya Petersen went 2 for 2 for Beth-Center (5-6, 4-6).
Serra Catholic 18, Ellis School 2 – Kelly Morrissey singled, doubled and drove in five runs and Catherine Clarke and Keyara Watkins doubled and drove in two runs apiece to lead Serra Catholic (11-2, 10-0) in a Section 2-2A win. Maryella Wanless tripled for Ellis School (0-10, 0-9).
Shaler 2, Deer Lakes 0 – Emily Spears hit a two-run double in top of the sixth, leading Shaler (13-2) to a nonsection win. Maddie Kee struck out 17 and had two hits for Deer Lakes (9-8).
Shenango 11, Freedom 1 – Kennedi Lynn struck out 14 and allowed two hits in six innings to lead Shenango (8-7, 8-4) to a Section 1-2A win. Shaye Bailey hit a home run for Freedom (4-9, 4-8). Zoe Offie hit two singles, a double and drove in three runs for the Wildcats.
Southmoreland 13, Derry 7 – Makayla Etling hit two home runs, Taylor Doppleheuer homered, and Amarah McCutcheon hit two doubles for Southmoreland (12-2, 7-2) in a Section 3-3A win. Sophia Doherty went 4 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs for Derry (3-13, 1-9). Winning pitcher Maddie Brown struck out 15 for the Scotties.
Thomas Jefferson 12, Belle Vernon 2 – Ella Gruber hit a two-run homer and Hannah Alonso and Taylor Karpac doubled and drove in two runs apiece for Thomas Jefferson (9-6) in a nonsection win. Katie Sokol and Sydney Stark each doubled for Belle Vernon (13-5).
Western Beaver 9, Beaver Falls 1 – Izzie Lefebvre struck out 12 and allowed two hits in seven innings and hit two singles, a triple and drove in three runs to lead Western Beaver (6-6) to a nonsection win. Zhekiyah Reddick singled and doubled for Beaver Falls (2-11).
Boys volleyball
Canon-McMillan 3, Baldwin 0 – Luke Bockius had 18 kills and Landon Patterson added seven kills to help Canon-McMillan (11-2, 8-0) to a Section 1-3A win. Justin Peters had 20 assists and six kills and William O’Bryan recorded 12 assists and five digs for the Big Macs.
Derry 3, Armstrong 2 – Cameron McNichol had 19 kills and five blocks and Noah Berkhimer and Mason Beeman each added 14 kills to lead Derry to a Section 2-2A win. Game scores were 22-25, 25-15, 31-29, 21-25, 15-11. Johnathan Shumaker had 11 digs.
Hempfield 3, Plum 0 – Drew Gordon had 14 kills and Josh Reilly added 11 to lead Hempfield to a Section 3-3a victory.
North Catholic 3, Montour 0 – Drew Palmer had 15 kills and five blocks to lead North Catholic to a Section 1-2A win. Lucas Gunther added nine kills and Nate Ball had six kills and five blocks. Evan Cmiel recorded 10 digs.
Norwin 3, Central Catholic 0 – Ben Tygielski had 10 kills and Lucas Churchfield recorded 16 digs to lead Norwin to a Section 3-3A win.
Moon 3, Bethel Park 1 – Charlie Basil had 32 kills to go over the 1,000 mark for his career for Moon in a Section 1-3A win. Casey Sunday added 15 kills and Josh Hatton recorded 17 digs.
Boys tennis
WPIAL playoffs – Chase Merkel and William Meagher won singles matches and the teams of Grant Webb and Matteo Castellini and Willson Watson with Brahm Graniodis swept doubles to lead No. 6 Quaker Valley to a 4-1 upset win over No. 3 Winchester Thurston in the WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinals. In other 2A matches, No. 1 Sewickley Academy swept No. 8 Valley, 5-0, No. 4 South Park beat No. 5 Hampton, 3-2, and No. 2 North Catholic handled No. 10 Montour, 4-1.
In Class 3A, No. 1 North Allegheny swept No. 8 Franklin Regional, 5-0, No. 5 Fox Chapel edged out No. 4 Mt. Lebanon, 3-2, No. 3 Upper St. Clair blanked No. 6 Shady Side Academy, 5-0, and No. 2 Gateway got past No. 7 Pine-Richland, 3-2.
