High school roundup for May 28, 2024: Lily Duffill’s grand slam sends Chartiers Valley to states

Lily Duffill’s grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning gave No. 4 Chartiers Valley the lead for good in a 6-4 victory over No. 11 Blackhawk in the WPIAL Class 4A softball third-place game Tuesday.
Duffill went 2 for 3 with a double and five RBIs. Delaney O’Connor also had two hits, including a homer, and winning pitcher Taylor Walsh allowed one unearned run and struck out six in a complete game for the Colts (17-4), who claimed the third and final PIAA spot out of the WPIAL. Brynn Hysong doubled and Karma Malcolm had a single, run scored and RBI for the Cougars (9-9).
Carmichaels 7, West Greene 6 – Carys McConnell reached on an error and scored on an RBI groundout by Megan Voithofer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give No. 2 Carmichaels (16-3) a win in the Class A third-place game. McConnell went 2 for 4 with two doubles. Winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak struck out 10 in eight innings and went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs for the Mighty Mikes. Samantha Zimmerman doubled twice and drove in two runs for No. 5 West Greene (13-8). Both teams advance to states.
Laurel 10, OLSH 0 – Autumn Boyd threw a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and had two hits and two RBIs at the plate to lead No. 3 Laurel (18-5) to a five-inning victory in the Class 2A third-place game. Ivy Pancher went 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs and Riley Balcolm, Mayci Lang and Lexi Bruta each had two hits for the Spartans, who claimed the third and final PIAA playoff spot from the WPIAL. Camryn Hummel doubled for the only hit for No. 5 OLSH (14-6).
Baseball
Burgettstown 8, OLSH 2 – Winning pitcher Brodie Kuzior threw a complete game, giving up two unearned runs and striking out 11, and helped his cause with two doubles and three RBIs as No. 4 Burgettstown (14-4-1) won the Class 2A third-place game to claim the final WPIAL berth in the PIAA playoffs. Riley Kennedy had two hits and two RBIs for the Blue Devils. Gino Williams doubled and Vann Kavals singled and drove in a run for No. 2 OLSH (17-6).
Hollidaysburg 5, Obama Academy 1 – Winning pitcher Carson Kensinger allowed two hits and one unearned run and struck out 12 and went 2 for 2 with a homer and two RBIs to lead Hollidaysburg in a Class 5A PIAA subregional final. Clark Ehman and Roman Gray had hits for Obama Academy (11-7).
Montour 3, Thomas Jefferson 2 – Matteo Weber doubled and scored on a Jason George RBI groundout in the top of the 11th to lead No. 4 Montour (16-6) in the Class 4A third-place game. Weber also pitched five innings of relief, allowing one run, to earn the win. Zachary Ciamacco and Tyler Hornichak each had two hits for the Spartans. Brady McGough and Noah Kaszer hit RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh innings for No. 2 Thomas Jefferson (19-4) to force extra innings. Both teams advance to states.
