High school roundup for May 3, 2019: No. 2 Baldwin tops No. 1 Bethel Park

An early run was all it took for Baldwin to take down No. 1 Bethel Park in a Section 1-6A softball game Friday afternoon.
Selena Juquay walked to open the game, stole second and scored on a single by Addie Tagg as No. 2 Baldwin (11-3, 10-3) earned a 1-0 victory over the Black Hawks.
Tagg threw a six-hitter with seven strikeouts to earn the win.
North Hills 5, North Allegheny 3 — Shay Hagerman was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Bethany Wittig knocked in two runs as North Hills (10-6, 8-6) upset No. 3 North Allegheny (12-5, 10-4) in Section 2-6A. It was the sixth straight win for the Indians.
Seneca Valley 12, Butler 0 (5 inn.) — Karli Hacker homered and had two RBIs, and Julia Ehrman tripled in two runs as No. 5 Seneca Valley (12-5, 9-5) won in Section 2-6A.
Albert Gallatin 14, Laurel Highlands 6 (6 inn.) — Rylea Hlatky and Annalia Paoli homered to help Albert Gallatin (8-7, 8-6) win a Section 1-5A game.
Thomas Jefferson 8, West Mifflin 3 — Mackenzie Zang had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs as No. 5 Thomas Jefferson (12-3, 8-3) won a Section 2-4A game.
South Park 5, Steel Valley 4 — Charlyn Blackburn was 3 for 3, and winning pitcher Julie Shinavski had two hits and two RBIs as South Park (12-3, 9-2)w on in Section 3-3A.
Shenango 6, Mohawk 3 — Alexis Prejsnar had two doubles, and Lacey Kale tripled in two runs as Shenango (7-8, 7-7) won a Section 4-2A game.
West Greene 10, Mapletown 0 (5 inn.) — Jade Renner threw a no-hitter with eight strikeouts and also was 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs to lead No. 1 West Greene (14-3, 10-0) to a Section 2-A win.
Connellsville 5, Latrobe 0 — Kylee Yothers knocked in two runs to help Connellsville (10-5, 9-4) win a Section 1-5A game. Jordan Novak was 2 for 3 with a double for Latrobe (11-5, 8-5), which is in fourth place in the section.
Jeannette 10, Greensburg Central Catholic 8 — Jeannette (7-4, 6-4) scored seven runs in the first inning and held on for a Section 3-A victory that clinched a WPIAL playoff berth. Faith Johnston hit her fourth home run of the season, and Taylor-Lynn Finken and Brylin Hickman doubled in runs for the Jayhawks. Johnston also struck out seven.
Bella Skatell, Riana Booher and losing pitcher Jaden Cox had three hits each for GCC (5-9, 5-5).
Armstrong 5, Kiski Area 0 — Mackenzie Egley tripled and had two RBIs as the River Hawks’ three-run second inning propelled them to a Section 1-5A win over Kiski Area.
Emily Campbell tripled, and Michaela Ban singled twice and had two RBIs for Armstrong (2-14, 2-11). Alexa Nagy and Ashlee Blair each had a single for Kiski Area (2-12, 2-12).
Ligonier Valley 8, Indiana 2 — Winning pitcher Jane Garver was 2 for 3 with a double, home run and four RBIs as Ligonier Valley (13-1) won a nonsection game.
Baseball
Montour 2, Laurel Highlands 1 — Logan Persinger and Anthony Tambellini each had RBIs to help Montour (10-7, 6-3) win in Section 3-5A.
South Park 6, Ringgold 4 — Jake Mittleider and Anthony Sharp each were 3 for 4, and David Monaco knocked in two runs as South Park (11-6, 7-5) won a Section 3-4A game. Brendan Gray had two doubles and an RBI for the Eagles.
Koby Bubash tripled, homered and had two RBIs for Ringgold (10-5, 9-3).
Thomas Jefferson 17. Elizabeth Forward 4 — Andy Kalup was 4 for 4 with four RBIs, and Mike Huber and Dylan Mallozzi each homered as Thomas Jefferson (11-5, 9-3) rolled to a Section 3-4A win.
Waynesburg 5, McGuffey 1 (6 inn.) — Luke Robinson and Shawn Miller each had a home run and two RBIs as Waynesburg (8-4, 7-3) won in Section 3-3A.
Carmichaels 3, Frazier 2 — Matt Barrish was 3 for 3 with two RBIs, and Nick Ricco singled home a run as part of a three-run second inning as Carmichaels (13-1, 9-1) won in Section 1-2A.
Hempfield 5, Connellsville 2 — Mike Hosni was 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Mitchell Miletics knocked in two runs as fourth-place Hempfield (9-9, 4-5) won in Section 2-6A. Winning pitcher Phil Fox was 2 for 3 with a double.
Yough 5, Highlands 0 — Cougars pitcher Mike Bell gave up two hits and struck out nine to pick up the Section 1-4A win for Yough.
Vinny Martin doubled and knocked in a run, and Jarett Bach doubled to pace Class 4A No. 2 Yough (11-5, 9-2). Jett Slepak took the loss for Highlands (9-7, 5-5).
Seton LaSalle 9, Jeannette 2 — Trevor O’Donnell and Dom Popa each plated two runs to help No. 5 Seton LaSalle (13-2, 8-1) win a Section 3-2A game. Michael McCabe had two hits and an RBI, and Zander Malik doubled in a run for Jeannette (9-6, 5-4).
Monessen 3, West Greene 2 (6 inn.) — Jack Sacco had an RBI, and winning pitcher Cam Frolo scored the winning run as Monessen (9-5, 8-2) won a Section 2-A game game shortened by inclement weather.
Fox Chapel 4, Gateway 3 — Jacob Gruden’s line-drive single in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Noah Marks with the go-ahead run, propelling Fox Chapel to a Section 1 win.
Marks got the win from the hill, giving up three hits and striking out seven batters through 61⁄3 innings. T.J. Johnston picked up the save for Fox Chapel (9-5, 7-4).
Pitcher Anthony Cammuso was dealt the loss for Gateway (12-5, 8-2), which beat Fox Chapel, 1-0, earlier this season.
Vincentian Academy 9, St. Joseph 7 — The Spartans put up seven runs over the final two innings, but their rally fell short against top-ranked Vincentian in a Section 3-A matchup. Hayden Mallin singled, homered and knocked in four runs for St. Joseph (5-7, 3-5). Sam Bass got the win for Vincentian Academy (9-0, 8-0).
Ligonier Valley 7, North Star 2 — John Caldwell was 2 for 4 with two RBIs to help Ligonier Valley (12-1) win a nonsection game.
