High school roundup for May 7, 2024: East Allegheny clinches playoff spot with walk-off win

Ryan Rupert hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning as East Allegheny clinched a Section 3-3A baseball playoff spot with a 2-1 win over Freeport on the last day of section play.

Winning pitcher Michael Cahill struck out 14 and Joe Connors went 2 for 4 with a double for the Wildcats (9-6, 6-6). Ryan Claypool doubled and drove in the only run for the Yellowjackets (6-11, 4-8).

Albert Gallatin 4, Carrick 3 – Cyrus Potkul doubled and knocked in two runs and Jason Myers struck out seven in seven innings as Albert Gallatin (4-15) beat Carrick (9-1) in nonsection play. Mason Maxwell and Ryan Schaffer each brought home a run for the Raiders. Matt Malinsky tripled for the Colonials.

Beth-Center 11, Washington 3 – Jonah Sussan went 2 for 2 with three RBIs, Chase Bebout and Brody Bebout each knocked in a pair of runs and Jackson Nopwaskey got the win as Beth-Center (9-9, 5-7) defeated Washington (8-9, 5-7) in Section 1-2A. Joseph Wilson clubbed a solo home run for the Prexies. The Beth-Center win, coupled with Washington’s win on Monday, means both the Bulldogs and Prexies qualify for the 2A playoffs.

Burgettstown 9, Frazier 4 – Brodie Kuzior singled, tripled and drove in two runs and Sam Elich belted a pair of doubles and plated a run to lead Burgettstown (10-4, 11-1) past Frazier (4-13, 2-10) in Section 1-2A.

Burrell 5, Highlands 1 – AJ McLafferty went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Stephen Hasson and Brayden Mell combined on a three-hitter for Burrell (10-7) in a nonsection win. Carson Goldberg doubled and drove in a run for Highlands (2-16).

Canon-McMillan 8, Ringgold 2 – Brayden Radue homered and drove in two, Cam Russell went 3 for 3 with a double and a solo home run and Nico Patragas doubled twice and drove in a pair as Canon-McMillan (8-11) beat Ringgold (8-11) in nonsection play. Anthony Koziel doubled and drove in a run for the Rams. M.J. Maruschak picked up a win for the Big Macs.

Carlynton 9, Sewickley Academy 6 – Dylan Sunderland drove in three runs, Tyler Heinrich went 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI and Sean Hart doubled as Carlynton (12-8, 7-5) defeated Sewickley Academy (5-10, 5-7) in Section 3-A. Jordan Smith went 2 for 3 with a double and knocked in three runs for the Panthers. Dominic Ciabattoni got the win for the Cougars. Despite the loss, Sewickley Academy made the playoffs due to a Cornell loss.

Carmichaels 12, Mapletown 2 – Mason Lapana went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, Dominic Colarusso was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Aydan Adamson struck out five in six innings as Carmichaels (11-4, 8-4) cruised to a Section 1-A win. A.J. Vanata crushed a two-run homer for Mapletown (2-14, 0-12).

Chartiers Valley 8, Hampton 2 – Colton Prosperi and Jackson Schultz each drove in a pair of runs and Jules Prozzloy got the win for Chartiers Valley (11-5) against Hampton (7-9) in a nonsection matchup. Gustavo Arias doubled and drove in a run for the Talbots. Nick Costantino and Colton Koza each doubled and knocked in a run for the Colts.

Chartiers-Houston 11, Charleroi 5 – Luke Camden went 3 for 3 with a two-run homer to lead Chartiers-Houston (9-8, 9-3) to a Section 1-2A win. Logan Koteles had two hits and an RBI for Charleroi (10-7, 7-5).

Clairton 12, Monessen 2 – Antonio Goodrum doubled twice and knocked in two runs, Tahvaz Armstrong had a base hit and two RBIs, and Daevon Gaynor struck out 10 in five innings for the win as Clairton (5-9, 4-8) crushed Monessen (0-17, 0-12) in Section 3-A. Christian Scherer drove in a run for the Greyhounds.

Derry 8, Shady Side Academy 2; Shady Side Academy 7, Derry 1 – Derry (6-9, 4-7) and Shady Side (9-7, 8-4) split a Section 3-3A doubleheader.

In the first game, Cason Long and Brady Angus each knocked in two runs and Collin Barkley brought home another with a double for the Trojans. Caden Green singled and drove in a run for the Bulldogs. Winning pitcher Nate Papuga allowed two runs on four hits and fanned three.

In the second game, Jonah Sackrowitz tripled and had four RBIs, Alex Avi drove in a run, and winning pitcher Sean Cooper struck out nine for Shady Side Academy. Colin Bush doubled for Derry. With the loss and an East Allegheny win, the Trojans were eliminated from playoff contention.

Eden Christian 14, Cornell 2 – Brady Hull went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs and Caleb Emswiler was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, a homer and four RBIs to lead Eden Christian (14-4, 12-0) to a Section 3-A win. Christopher Jackson hit a two-run homer for Cornell (4-9, 4-8). Brett Feldman doubled and drove in two runs and winning pitcher Noah Emswiler knocked in another for the Warriors. The Raiders were eliminated from the playoffs with the loss.

Fort Cherry 7, Jefferson-Morgan 2 – Colton Temple went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, Luke Sweder went 2 for 4 and knocked in two runs, and Matt Sieg fanned six in a Fort Cherry (12-3, 10-2) Section 1-A win. Drew Adams finished with two RBIs for Jefferson-Morgan (6-9, 4-8).

Freedom 15, Northgate 5 – Mason O’Donnell went 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, Colton Blank doubled and knocked in two runs, and Tyler Schultheis picked up a win as Freedom (11-8, 8-6) hammered Northgate (2-15, 2-12) in Section 2-2A. Dwayne Reed doubled and drove in two for the Flames.

Gateway 6, Penn Hills 0 – Grady Dunsmore went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs and Ahmad Harris singled, doubled and drove in a run for Gateway (3-14, 2-9) in a Section 1-5A win. Connor Lehman hit two singles for Penn Hills (2-13, 0-12).

Greensburg Central Catholic 3, Riverview 2 – Brody Bothell went 2 for 3 with an RBI and winning pitcher Ethan Brody and Ian Shipley each drove in a run for Greensburg Central Catholic (10-4, 9-2) in a Section 3-2A win. Miles Duncan drove in two runs for Riverview (11-6, 7-4).

Greensburg Salem 18, Yough 3 – Dom Rosensteel went 2 for 2 with a triple and four RBIs, Brody Chismar doubled and drove in a run, and Tyler Martin went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs as Greensburg Salem (7-7, 7-4) rolled to a Section 4-3A win against Yough (6-11, 5-6). Braedon Leatherman got the win for the Lions. With the loss, Yough was eliminated from the playoffs.

Laurel 10, Aliquippa 0 – Winning pitcher Luca Santini went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Connor Mackrell was 2 for 2 with a double as Laurel (11-7, 9-5) blanked Aliquippa (0-14, 0-14) in Section 2-2A. Skylar Wisdom had the only hit for the Quips.

Leechburg 3, Kiski School 2 – Steven Senjan threw 5⅔ scoreless innings and Jayden Floyd singled, doubled and drove in a run to lead Leechburg (9-7). Logan Gates had two hits for Kiski School.

Ligonier Valley 4, Jeannette 3 – Parker Hollick went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Owen Smith hit two singles and drove in a run to lead Ligonier Valley (6-10, 4-8) to a Section 3-2A win. Brayden Luttner singled, doubled and drove in two runs for Jeannette (7-9, 5-7).

Mt. Pleasant 4, Southmoreland 2 – Winning pitcher Connor Drzal drove in two runs while Cole Chatfield and Brady Painter each had two hits as Mt. Pleasant (13-4, 11-1) beat Southmoreland (3-12, 2-10) in Section 4-3A. Jake Govern collected two hits and a pair of RBIs for the Scotties.

Neshannock 1, Quaker Valley 0 – Cole Hutchison hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to lift Neshannock (11-9, 8-4) to a Section 1-3A win. Anthony Eakin and Ryan Cameron each doubled while Dom Cubellis struck out seven in three innings for the win. Todd Kagel doubled for Quaker Valley (4-13, 2-10).

OLSH 12, Seton LaSalle 4 – Anthony Hansen and Vann Kavals hit home runs and Sean Hudac went 3 for 4 with four RBIs to lead OLSH (16-4, 13-1) to a Section 2-2A win. Roman LoNero hit two singles, a double and drove in a run for Seton LaSalle (14-3, 12-2).

Riverside 9, Mohawk 4 – In a battle for first place in Section 1-3A, Darren McDade went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, Sam Barber doubled and brought home three, and Zack Hare doubled and drove in a run as Riverside (13-1, 11-1) emerged victorious. Bobby Fadden and Jackson Chapman hit solo homers and A.J. Verdi went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for Mohawk (16-3, 10-2). Hunter Garvin got the win for the Panthers.

Shaler 8, Upper St. Clair 2 – Elijah Muckle hit a three-run homer, Brady McGuire added a solo shot, and Chase Beran singled, tripled and drove in three to lead Shaler (15-4) to a nonsection win. Aidan Crochier hit a home run for Upper St. Clair (6-12).

Shenango 11, Ellwood City 9 – Joey Campoli doubled and drove in three runs while winning pitcher Jason Malley and Treyton Ross each knocked in a pair of runs as Shenango (9-9, 6-6) edged out Ellwood City (10-8, 5-7) in Section 1-3A and clinched a playoff spot. Aaron Lake and Jordan Keller each had two RBIs for the Wolverines.

South Park 2, Peters Township 1 – Winning pitcher Cooper Hochendoner threw a five-hitter and struck out 14 and Andrew Mittleider went 2 for 3 with a double for South Park (9-6) in a nonsection win. Nolan DiLucia went 3 for 3 with two doubles for Peters Township (8-11).

South Side 13, New Brighton 5 – RJ Fischer went 3 for 4 with four RBIs, Carter Wilson singled, doubled and drove in a run, and Ryder Goe had a triple and an RBI for South Side (8-8, 6-8) in a Section 2-2A win. Brock Budacki, Cartter Jackson and Vernon Krepps each doubled and drove in a run for New Brighton (9-8, 6-8).

St. Joseph 18, Summit Academy 3 – Matt Tomayko singled, doubled and drove in four runs, Charlie Ross singled, doubled and plated three, and Gabe Maltese had three hits and two RBIs for St. Joseph (4-10, 4-8) in a Section 2-A win over Summit Academy (0-11, 0-11).

Union 19, Springdale 8 – Mike Gunn homered, doubled and drove in three runs and Dom Cucitrone was 2 for 5 with three RBIs as Union (13-3, 12-0) rocked Springdale (5-8, 5-7) in Section 2-A. Landon Eckert and Dennen Bowen each knocked in two runs as Jalen Peace got the win for the Scotties. John Hughes went 4 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs for the Dynamos, who clinched a playoff spot with a Rochester loss.

Valley 6, Deer Lakes 0 – Nikolas Heakins went 2 for 4 with a double and a pair of RBIs and Tyler Danko pitched 6⅔ scoreless innings as Valley (15-4, 9-3) clinched the Section 3-3A title outright with a win over Deer Lakes (5-13, 3-9). Dom Dunkel and Dante Taliani each doubled for the Vikings.

Waynesburg 8, McGuffey 6 – Kory Taylor, Grant Pack and Alex Vansickle all doubled and knocked in a run to lift Waynesburg (13-3, 10-2) past McGuffey (6-8, 6-6) in Section 4-3A. Ryan Keith doubled and drove in a run for the Highlanders. Tyler Groves struck out 10 in 5⅓ innings for the Raiders.

West Allegheny 4, Hopewell 2 – Brock Cornell hit a double and triple and Jonah Buglak doubled and drove in a run for West Allegheny (13-3) in a nonsection win. Zach Gigliotti singled and drove in a run for Hopewell (9-9).

West Greene 8, California 5 – Morgan Kiger doubled and drove in two runs and Hayden Hamilton got the win as West Greene (11-5, 8-4) prevailed over California (5-13, 4-8) in Section 1-A. Spencer Petrucci and Caden Monticelli each drove in a run for the Trojans.

Western Beaver 8, Rochester 2 – Logan Beercook went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Ethan Wilson was 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI, and Western Beaver (9-7, 9-3) eliminated Rochester (4-11, 4-8) from playoff contention with a Section 2-A win. Lennon Miller drove in a run for the Rams. Christian Stefankis got the win and Vinny Ross picked up a save for the Golden Beavers.

Softball

Baldwin 10, Butler 5 – Ryley Shaw went 5 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs, Reese Temme hit a double, triple and home run, and Kaylee Smolko singled, doubled and drove in three runs to lead Baldwin (6-11, 5-10) to a Section 1-6A win. Kaela Malis doubled and drove in a run for Butler (3-13, 2-13).

Bentworth 13, Beth-Center 0 – Sydney Gonglik threw a one-hit shutout, struck out 13 and hit a home run for Bentworth (14-2, 12-0) in a Section 3-2A win. Aubrie Logan went 3 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs for the Bearcats. Sonya Petersen singled for Beth-Center (6-7, 5-7), which was eliminated from playoff contention.

Bethel Park 6, Canon-McMillan 5 – Becky Gillenberger went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs and Nicolette Antonucci hit a two-run single for Bethel Park (9-9) in a nonsection win. Olivia Ford and Leah LaSalvia doubled and drove in a run apiece for Canon-McMillan (6-11).

Brownsville 15, Monessen 0 – Ava Clark threw a four-inning perfect game, struck out nine and went 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs for Brownsville (4-9) in a nonsection win over Monessen (7-6). Zaydee Downer homered and Skyler Gates hit two doubles and drove in three runs for the Falcons.

Burrell 6, Highlands 3 – Braelyn Jones tripled and drove in a run and Bella Stewart, Jenna Morrison and Pyper Ferres doubled and knocked in a run apiece to lead Burrell (10-6) to a nonsection win. Mackenzie George hit two singles and drove in a run for Highlands (3-12).

Charleroi 3, Ringgold 0 – Winning pitcher Sofia Celaschi struck out eight in five scoreless innings and hit a single and double and Emma Skobel hit two singles for Charleroi (13-4) in a nonsection win. Daniella Vecchio singled and doubled for Ringgold (2-13).

Chartiers Valley 12, Trinity 6 – Lily Duffill went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs, Delaney O’Connor hit four singles and drove in two runs, and Marta Gualazzi singled, doubled and drove in two runs to lead Chartiers Valley (14-3) to a nonsection win. Alexa Zawacki, Emily Hasson and Nina Christy each doubled for Trinity (11-4). Winning pitcher Taylor Walsh struck out 12 for the Colts.

Connellsville 10, Laurel Highlands 0 – Cali Leichliter hit a double, home run and three RBIs, Kirra Davis homered, and Kameron Kantorik doubled and drove in two runs for Connellsville (12-7) in a nonsection win over Laurel Highlands (5-9). Winning pitcher Iris Burd threw a five-inning, two-hit shutout and struck out five for the Falcons.

Elizabeth Forward 2, Thomas Jefferson 1 – Shelby Telegdy hit a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning for Elizabeth Forward (17-1) in a nonsection win. Zoe Krizan hit a double and home run for Thomas Jefferson (9-7).

Freeport 17, Shady Side Academy 0 – Sydney Selker threw a four-inning, one-hit shutout, struck out 10 and went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs for Freeport (10-6, 6-4) in a Section 1-3A win. Savanna Muir singled for Shady Side Academy (3-8, 1-8). Addyson Caurso drove in three runs and Lauren Clark went 4 for 4 with a double and RBI for the Yellowjackets.

Hampton 13, Mars 0 – Charlotte Lomb went 3 for 3 with a double and four RBIs, Mackenzie Reese singled, tripled and drove in four runs and Marissa Snyder had two singles and three RBIs for Hampton (14-3) in a nonsection win. Taylor Schmitt singled for Mars (6-12).

Hempfield 9, Norwin 1 – Allie Cervola hit a home run and drove in four runs and Ella Berkebile singled, homered and knocked in two runs for Hempfield (17-1, 15-1) in a Section 1-6A win. Isabella Deering singled and drove in the lone run for Norwin (8-10, 7-9).

Laurel 4, Ellwood City 2 – Autumn Boyd threw a two-hitter and struck out 14 to lead Laurel (15-4) past Ellwood City (13-4) in a nonsection win. Ivy Pancher singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Spartans.

Ligonier Valley 2, Latrobe 1 – Sydney Foust’s RBI single in the fifth provided the winning run for Ligonier Valley (12-5) in a nonsection victory. Cheyenne Piper struck out 13 for the Rams. Kayla Williams doubled for Latrobe (9-9).

Montour 15, Moon 13 – Shania Cope had two singles, a double and four RBIs, Hailey Staub went 4 for 5 with two triples and three RBIs, and Delaney Barto homered to lead Montour (9-6) to a nonsection win. Sydney Ray singled, doubled and drove in five runs and Cami Chambers homered for Moon (2-14).

Neshannock 8, Mohawk 1 – Addy Frye struck out 13 and Abigail Measel and Gabby Quinn each homered to lead Neshannock (18-0) to a nonsection win. Aricka Young hit three singles and drove in a run for Mohawk (13-5).

Northgate 12,Sewickley Academy 10 – Johna Abramowicz struck out 13 and Michaela DeFlorimonte hit a home run for Northgate (5-9, 5-6) in a Section 1-A win over Sewickley Academy (2-10, 2-10).

Oakland Catholic 6, Penn Hills 4 – Madison Pullen hit a home run and Chloe Fettis drove in three runs to lead Oakland Catholic (3-11, 1-9) to its first Section 1-5A win of the season. London Irish went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Penn Hills (5-9, 1-9).

Peters Township 6, Serra Catholic 2 – Natalie Chapas tripled and drove in two runs while Avery Carson and Skylar Lemansky each knocked in a run for Peters Township (5-14) in a nonsection win. Ava Wisniewski doubled and drove in a run for Serra Catholic (11-3). Lili Giulianelli struck out seven in five innings for the win.

West Greene 6, Waynesburg 2 – Samantha Zimmerman hit a home run and drove in four runs to lead West Greene (11-6) to a nonsection win. Dani Stockdale, Eue Pester and Aidan Snider each doubled for Waynesburg (6-11).

Yough 18, Greensburg Salem 0 – Kylee Fisher struck out eight, allowed three hits, hit two doubles and drove in three runs for Yough (8-4) in a nonsection win. Madison Horvat went 4 for 4 with four RBIs, and Katie Proctor drove in three runs for the Cougars. Marley Perrone doubled for Greensburg Salem (8-12).

Boys volleyball

Canon-McMillan 3, Upper St. Clair 0 – Luke Bockius had 13 kills, Nolan Rosing had 11 digs and William O’Bryan had 22 assists as Canon-McMillan (12-2, 9-0) swept Upper St. Clair (6-8, 4-5) in Section 1-3A. Justin Peters added 11 assists for the Big Macs.

North Catholic 3, Hopewell 0 – Drew Palmer had 13 kills, Lucas Gunther had 12 kills and Liam Cooke had 30 assists for North Catholic (13-2, 10-1) in a Section 1-2A win over Hopewell (6-10, 4-7).

Norwin 3, Penn Hills 0 – Jackson Genicola had 10 kills and Ben Tygielski and Dane Thompson added six kills each to lead Norwin to a Section 3-3A win.

Penn-Trafford 3, Hempfield 0 – Bradley Heinbaugh has 12 kills, Nathaniel Rugh handed out 35 assists and Drew Sherwin recorded 14 digs to lead Penn-Trafford (13-2, 8-1) to a Section 3-3A win. Drew Gordon led Hempfield (8-6, 4-5) with 17 kills.

Shaler 3, Pine-Richland 0 – Zach Rosenwald had 33 assists, seven digs and five blocks while Logan Peterson had nine kills and Peyton Planz had eight as Shaler (12-1, 10-1) swept Pine-Richland (6-8, 4-7) in Section 2-3A. Cam Miller had 15 digs for the Titans.

Girls lacrosse

Pine-Richland 21, Hampton 6 – Madeline Mill and Cate Gentile scored five goals apiece and Kendyll Jerry and Claire Mill added three goals each to lead Pine-Richland (14-1-1) to a nonsection win over Hampton (6-9).
