High school roundup for May 9, 2024: Ligonier Valley ace tunes up for playoffs with no-hitter, 16 Ks

Looks like Ligonier Valley pitcher Cheyenne Piper is ready for the playoffs.

Piper threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts and went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI to lead the Rams to a 7-0 victory over Indiana (13-5) in nonsection softball Thursday.

Sydnee Foust had three hits and three RBIs, Abby Springer singled and doubled and Neve Dowden drove in a pair of runs for Ligonier Valley (13-5).

Bentworth 12, West Greene 0 – Sydney Gonglik threw a five-inning, two-hit shutout and struck out 12 for Bentworth (15-2) in a nonsection win. Nora Lindley hit a home run and Kayla O’Dell doubled and drove in three runs for the Bearcats. Marissa Tharp doubled for West Greene (11-7).

Blackhawk 8, Moon 1 – Winning pitcher Kylie Prisuta struck out 14 and Mia Yenges drove in three runs for Blackhawk (8-7) in a nonsection win. Sydney Ray hit a home run for Moon (2-15).

Jefferson-Morgan 4, Brownsville 3 – Emilee Bazzoli threw a two-hit shutout, struck out eight and doubled for Jefferson-Morgan (7-8) in a nonsection win over Brownsville (5-9).

Penn-Trafford 4, Norwin 1 — Cameron Ponko went 2 for 2 with a double and RBI, and Ella Mains hit two singles and drove in a run for Penn-Trafford (13-5) in a nonsection win. Winning pitcher Allyson Paulone gave up four hits in six innings. Josey Michalski singled and drove in a run for Norwin (8-11).

West Mifflin 11, Burrell 1 – Rylie Dobnak went 3 for 4 with a double and five RBIs and Mia Bey drove in two runs for West Mifflin (10-8) in a nonsection win. Pyper Ferres hit a home run for Burrell (10-8).

Baseball

Canon-McMillan 6, Hampton 3 – Michael Stafford threw four scoreless innings with four strikeouts in a nonsection win for Canon-McMillan (9-11). Ryan Scully drove in two runs for Hampton (7-10). Will Taczak went 2 for 2 with a double and RBI for the Big Macs.

East Allegheny 3, South Allegheny 2 – Chance Odoski threw 2⅓ innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for East Allegheny (11-6) in a nonsection victory. Ryan Kirk hit two singles and drove in two runs for the Wildcats. Josh Nesky hit two singles for South Allegheny (15-4).

Latrobe 7, Greensburg Salem 1 – Mason Leonard doubled and drove in three runs and Louie Amatucci went 2 for 2 with a double and RBI to lead Latrobe (17-3) past Greensburg Salem (8-8) in a nonsection win.

North Hills 2, Penn Hills 1 – Tristan Weimann hit a single and double and Connor Davis and Logan Hunt drove in a run apiece for North Hills (11-4-1) in a nonsection win. Mack Brynes singled and drove in a run for Penn Hills (2-13).

Valley 5, Ligonier Valley 3 – Tyler Danko hit two doubles and drove in three runs and Jacob Stranaiec and winning pitcher Nikolas Heakins each doubled to lead Valley (16-4) to a nonsection win over Ligonier Valley (6-11).

West Allegheny 5, Beaver 0 – Ben Kern doubled and drove in a run and Mason Gass struck out eight in six innings for West Allegheny (15-3) in a nonsection win over Beaver (7-12).

Boys volleyball

Canon-McMillan 3, Bethel Park 0 – Luke Bockius had 24 kills and 13 digs and Justin Peters added eight kills to lead Canon-McMillan (13-2, 10-0) to a Section 1-3A win. Ben Kopec had seven kills and seven digs and William O’Bryan recorded 22 assists and six digs for the Big Macs.

Derry 3, Deer Lakes 0 – Cam McNichol had 13 kills, Noah Berkhimer added 11 kills and Mason Beeman finished with 10 to help Derry clinch a playoff berth with a Section 2-2A win over Deer Lakes. Johnathan Shumaker had 10 digs for the Trojans.

Hempfield 3, Central Catholic 0 – Drew Gordon and Josh Reilly had 11 kills apiece and Gunner Wheaton added seven for Hempfield in a Section 3-3A win over Central Catholic.

North Allegheny 3, Pine-Richland 0 – Will Robertson had nine kills and Peter Bratich added eight kills and five blocks to lead North Allegheny to a Section 2-3A win. Will Hahn had 19 digs and four aces and Nicolas Carioto handed out 17 assists.

North Catholic 3, Bishop Canevin 0 – Lucas Gunther led the way with eight kills and Drew Palmer had seven kills for North Catholic in a Section 1-2A sweep of Bishop Canevin.

Girls lacrosse

Moon 10, Seneca Valley 9 – Seanna Rodriguez scored four goals and Avery Machusko and Reese Keslar added two apiece to lead Moon past Seneca Valley in a nonsection win.

Plum 13, Knoch 4 – Rayla Smith and Carly Venanzi each scored four goals to lead Plum to a nonsection win. Brooke Price had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs.
