High school roundup for Nov. 2, 2023: Mars, South Park, Springdale move on to states

Ainsley Ray and Kayleigh Clark scored as top-seeded Mars (17-1) bounced back from a penalty shootout loss in the semifinals and moved on to the PIAA playoffs with a 2-0 victory over No. 7 Montour (14-4-3) in the WPIAL Class 3A girls soccer third-place match Thursday.
Addi Girdwood and Rosie Pellegrino dished out assists and Kate McEnroe recorded the shutout for the Fightin’ Planets, who will take on the District 10 or City League champion in the first round of the state tournament Tuesday.
South Park 3, Burrell 0 – Alicia Riberich, Brooke Paylo and Ari Beck scored as fifth-seeded South Park (16-6) qualified for the state playoffs with a victory over sixth-seeded Burrell (14-6) in the Class 2A third-place match. The Eagles will face the District 10 champs in the first round of the PIAA tournament Tuesday.
Springdale 7, South Allegheny 0 – Briana Ross racked up five goals and two assists as sixth-seeded Springdale secured a spot in the state playoffs with a victory over No. 12 South Allegheny (13-9) in the Class A third-place match. Kai Williams added a pair of goals, Brooke Taliani had two assists, Ariana Feizi collected an assist, and Baileigh Haas recorded the shutout for the Dynamos (15-4), who will face the District 10 champs in the first round of the state playoffs Tuesday.
Girls volleyball
Frazier 3, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 – Second-seeded Frazier dropped the first set but won the next three to advance to the state playoffs with a 15-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-17 victory over fourth-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic (13-6) in the Class A third-place match. Frazier (19-2) will face the District 10 champs in the first round of the PIAA tournament Tuesday.
Hockey
Avonworth 5, Beaver 2 – Austin Dzadovsky and Conner Ralston each had a goal and an assist and Cooper Powell, Jake Seifarth and Linus Jesionowski also scored for Avonworth (4-0) in a Class A win. Zack Masters and Carson Cuddy scored for Beaver (2-4).
Bishop Canevin 12, Central Valley 1 – Ryan Saginaw had a hat trick and Jack Misterka and Brady Ellis each scored twice to lead Bishop Canevin (3-0) to a Varsity D2 win. Gavin Crivelli scored for Central Valley (2-2).
Bishop McCort 2, South Fayette 1 – Sammy Treager and Nikita Kolomejtsev scored third-period goals and Hleb Subach made 26 saves as Bishop McCort (3-1) rallied for a Class 2A win. Nolan Murphy scored and Zachary Bender made 23 saves for South Fayette (1-1-1).
Blackhawk 12, Westmont Hilltop 0 – Bryce Leiper had two goals and two assists and Finn Conlon and Dylan Leiper each added a pair of goals to lead Blackhawk (3-0) past Westmont Hilltop (0-4) in Class A.
Chartiers Valley 8, Richland 4 – Chris DeAngelis had three goals and an assist and Brady Nairn collected two goals and two assists to power Chartiers Valley (5-0) in a Class A win. Noah Brydon scored twice for Richland (1-4).
Fox Chapel 7, Franklin Regional 5 – Liam Wiseman and Hayden Ferra each scored twice and Dom Casile had a goal and three assists to lead Fox Chapel (4-2) to a Class 2A victory. Luke Anderchak and Max Rutkowski each had a goal and two assists for Franklin Regional (1-2-1).
Latrobe 6, Armstrong 1 – Louie Amatucci had two goals and an assist and Joey Crimboli also scored twice to lead Latrobe (5-2) to a Class 2A win. Jacob Hannah added three assists. Jake Graff scored for Armstrong (0-5).
Meadville 7, McDowell 0 – Dougie Phillis had two goals and an assist and Rocco Tartaglione also scored twice as Meadville (5-1) beat McDowell (1-3) in Class A. Ben Hilson and Robert Mahoney each had a goal and two assists and Zach Schepner added three assists.
Moon 4, Plum 1 – Eric Hartman had a pair of goals and Brody Eckert and Josh Hatton also scored to lift Moon (3-1) to a Class A win. Anthony Smith scored for Plum (2-2).
Morgantown 7, Ringgold 6 – Landon Vaccaro scored the tying goal for Ringgold (1-2-2) as the third period expired but Morgantown (2-2) won in a shootout. Geno Valenti had a hat trick with an assist and Ayden Shepard added two goals and an assist for Morgantown. Bruce Santina had two goals and an assist for Ringgold.
North Allegheny 7, Central Catholic 2 – Evan Kerber had two goals and an assist and Evan Perrotte added a goal and an assist for North Allegheny (4-1) in a Class 3A win. Ed Scherer, Luke Walkauskas, Jake Fritz and Alex Dorsch also scored for NA. Billy George Jr. and Anthony D’Orazio had goals for Central Catholic (3-2).
Thomas Jefferson 7, Norwin 1 – Scott Allan had two goals and Jake Stock added a goal and an assist as Thomas Jefferson (6-0) remained undefeated in Class 2A. Alex Thomas scored for Norwin (3-1-1).
Upper St. Clair 9, Cathedral Prep 2 – Ryan Buonomo had a hat trick, Dylan Yealy added two goals and an assist, and Eli Rankin had a goal and three assists to power Upper St. Clair (4-1) to a Class 3A victory. Henry Fritts and Logan Taylor scored for Cathedral Prep (1-4).
Wheeling Catholic 9, Freeport 1 – Logan Pielech had three goals and two assists, Aden Cooey added two goals and two assists, and Zach Vitlip also scored twice for Wheeling Catholic (3-0) in a Class A win. Aiden Bauman scored for Freeport (1-4-1).
Wheeling Park 9, Hampton 2 – Luke Simonetti had three goals and two assists for Wheeling Park (3-2) in a Class A win. Cooper Abraham had a goal and two assists and Kaden Schnarr and Landon Szazynski each added a goal and an assist. Sean Sullivan and Eli Gynn scored for Hampton (0-5).
